A local buddy is ditching a working Sony KP-53HS30. It'd be minimal hassle to get it here to try it, and probably much more hassle to get rid of it if I don't like it. I might convince him to stash it in his basement for a bit so I can fire it up there to test it. Anyway, just wondering if anybody has experience with these big beasties...spec-wise it looks like it might be a decent image...until it stops working.

Thanks in advance,

je

I kicked around the idea getting one of these big ol' 4:3 HD RPTV (the bigger model of this same line though--the KP-61HS30!) If the convergence and guns are all set right, they can look really damn good. I decided against, because I wanted to use the same TV/Monitor for LD as well as blu-ray and these RPTVs only have component as their HD inputs (no HDCP compliant digital input for blu-ray.) That and they're really damn big!!

However, if you're not planning on using it for blu-ray, I imagine it'll kick a** for LD and DVD (and HD television content as well.) It has the same 16:9 enhanced mode for anamorphic and HD content that the WEGA line has, and you can definitely see the difference in detail when that is used. And if it has the same 3D comb filter that the HS/XBR WEGAs do, it works wonders with LD (it does have a 3D comb filter.)

I remember a thread on another HT forum where this one guy touted his HD-ready Sony RPTV after getting guns cleaned. Showed screen shots of the Superbit DVD of The Fifth Element and it looked really damn good.

So it's worth a shot. And it's not as heavy as I thought it would be--157lbs.

Thanks for the insight. I'm going to head over there tomorrow and test it out, and probably set up a friend with it + my DVL-90 just for giggles. They're on a ground-level apartment with no TV currently, and they'll be amused by the ginormous screen + the ginormous laserdiscs.

More info later in the weekend...

Guns and convergence is big issue with these. They drift over time and need adjusting. Crt guns last 4-5k hours without losing much of their brightness. They are expensive to replace.

When adjusted correctly, from dead on the picture is good. But no hdcp/hdmi/dvi so its limited to analog connections. Hd cable by default is 16:9 so you will lose screen estate.

You are correct you will have to pay money to get rid of it of you dont want it. Bestbuy charges $129 for tv haul away unless you buy a large tv and have it delivered to you for a fee.

you can always get an axe for 10 bucks at an estate sale :silent:

or if you have a vehicle you should be able to take it to the dump, or just drop it off at a goodwill or even at a
grocery store drop off, just leave it outside that mini dumpster

I would rather spend the money on axe. At least it would be fun to go ninja on this monster tv.
