I got an ATI 750 HD PCIe and installed it in my PC. Works really well, but my issue is the fact that the highest level of capture is 6Mbps MPEG-2. I wish you could capture at DV level, 25Mbps AVI (as close to uncompressed SD video as you can get.) Believe me, you can see a difference between the two when you capture LD.

Hopefully that's just the limitations of the software came with it rather than the hardware, but the card doesn't work with my Pinnacle Movie Maker software. I might try to get Adobe Premiere and see if that will recognize the card and capture at DV level.

Try capturing with VirtualDub.

Just tried Virtual Dub. It recognizes the card, but only seems to be able to capture from the antenna input or cable input from the card. Doesn't give me the option for the video input.

Video -> Video Source?

If not build a graph in GraphEdit and try switching there with the VDub capture window open.

So are you saying via DMR-ES25 HDMI, I will not get interlaced signal?

You need to get VirtualDub 1.9. Other versions will not work with this card. You also want to get Huffyuv codec and capture using this codec.

On a separate note, I got Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle for Thunderbolt. I haven't tried HDMI yet. Contrary to many bad reviews it gives incredible quality via S-Video input.

Update.

Yes, you can use HDMI out from Panasonic DMR-ES25. However, the output resolution is limited to 480p, 720p and 1080i. I decided not to use upconversion and/or deinterlacing. So ended up using Composite input to DMR-ES25 and from there Component output to Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle for Thunderbolt to capture at standard resolution 720x486 in 8bit uncompressed MOV. I then crop 4 top and 2 bottom lines in AVISynth and convert it to Huffyuv AVI.

Put together a vid and uploaded it to youtube testing the comb filters on the DMR-ES25S and the ATI 750.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbbh3xY3zXA

I was surprised by the color reproduction of the ES25S via S-Video as it is nothing like how it is via component to my TV. Through component into my 24" Sony WEGA, the 1.5 MHz plate gives full color, but through S-Video into the capture card, no such luck.

The ATI 750 performed better with the cross-color and with color reproduction.

And I wish you could really see how the comb filter in the Sony KV-40XBR800 WEGA performs. The rainbows completely disappear when the orb moves and the other section (under the "300" and "400" symbols) have no rainbows either after the first second. I wish there was some external piece of equipment that features this same comb filter (here's the spec sheet on the TV, but it gives no information on the made of the filter.)

Are you sure that the Pinnacle capture card you used does full chroma resolution? I've encountered several now (ATI 600 USB) that don't.

Also, the Panasonic LX-900 has an ~1px Y/C delay that's caused by its internal comb filter (it recombines for composite output). If you didn't correct for it, then it might cause overlapping that makes the end result look like it has much less chroma resolution than it really does.

It's possible that the Pinnacle doesn't. I'll plug the ES25S into my 24" WEGA via S-Video to see how it does.

Don't think that's it because when I plug the LX-900 into the KV-40XBR800, the 1.5 MHz color zone on the S&W test plate is just fine.

I am using Virtual Dub 1.9. Though I am using the 64 bit version as I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

Would 1.10 work with the card?

Has anyone used the Pioneer DVR-LX70 as a comb filter/scaler? I own the DVR-920H which has a similar filter but no upscaling. I'd be interested to know specifically how the internal upscaling and de-interlacing performs when combined with the 3D adjustable comb filter.

Since it was released in 2010, I would say no. The later DVD recorders did not feature 3D comb filters.

Hello all,

I just picked up a Panasonic DMR-ES25 with a dead drive for the comb filter. It does an amaziing job sending a component feed to my projector. I am going to compare using my reciever and projector to see which upscales more to my liking. The component output seems to retain a more "analog" look than the HDMI on the DVDR for LDs.

P.S.

I have also noticed that there is much less cropping of the image with the ES25.

I haven't used a ES20, but I believe someone mentioned earlier in this thread that the 25 and 20 use the same 3D comb filter.

However, I believe it was also mentioned that the ES20's filter is adjustable while the ES25's isn't.

FWIW, the E20 and ES20 are two different DVD recorders.

Yes, My ES25 looks to be 1/3 the size of the E20. I just hpe it makes the trip OK. Shipping is always a role of the dice.

My DMR-E20 was delivered on Friday. It looks virtually new and came with the original remote and manual. Not bad for 30 bucks. Does anybody want a DMR-ES25 with a dead drive? Let me know.

For what it's worth, I have a Samsung VR-357 that came with an iffy disc drive. I got a parts machine, swapped out the drives and now she purrs like Eartha Kitt. :-) It should be salvageable with a replacement drive.
