Are you thinking of a closed captioning decoder?

Well, if you want closed captions, ie: where US and Japanese laserdiscs have one of these icons on the jacket . . .

Image

. . . then yes, you'll want a closed caption decoder.

I believe there are several threads on the subject:

Help with choice of closed caption decoder
CC decoder
Closed Caption Decoders with RCA or S-Video out?

Now as far as getting one, I can't help much, but here are a few listed on ebay (US version anyway) . . .

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R4 ... r&_sacat=0

And I know of one DVD recorder that also decodes closed captions--> the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK

All that being said, if you want to decode LD-G or Laserdisc Graphics subtitles on Japanese Laserdiscs, that's different animal entirely.

thanks for these links

i want subs on US laserdiscs.
jap discs, i get only jap subs maybe no english subs available?

i will need a decoder which i can connect with S-video or a scart socket?
i don't know which one is the best to use?

i was offered to buy a decoder for approx 200 dollars but i think it was way too steep!

I think most of the time the closed captions on Japanese LDs are in English.

maybe jap subs will interfere with english subs in picture as there are 2 different language subs displaying?

You can only display one at a time.

Even if you try to display both closed captions and LD-G one will be superimposed over the other.

would this CCD work between LD and tv/projector?
it's verrrrrrrrry pricey?!
I don't quite understand the product information regarding this CCD if there are other parts needed to get the closed caption decoder functioning correctly?

thanks

few days ago I bought this cc decoder

it will take me a few weeks to get it delivered.
hopefully I will be very pleased getting subtitles as it has S-video connection which I will connect to my player

this CC decoder has an auto power switch for 100V - 240V
in Sweden we have 220V
I will connect this CC decoder to my CLD-R7G which runs on 120V through a stepdown converter.
Should I connect my CC decoder through the stepdown converter to work properly with my CLD-R7G or should I connect the CC decoder directly into my wall socket which runs on 220V?
I don't want to fry my CLD-R7G converting 120v through stepdown converter and operating the CC decoder through the wallsocket on 220V if current is mismastched when I connect both electronics 2-gether through the S-video cable

How should I connect my electronics 2-gether the safest way?

If it is a universal power supply, just hook it up the most convenient way. Nothing to worry about. You're just passing through video signals that has nothing to do with the operating voltage. You could even run the CC decoder with a universal adapter from Clas Ohlson without problems.

Plugging the CC decoder directly into the 220V wall outlet and using my CLD-R7G through the stepdown converter plugged into the wall outlet.
I was worried about using differnt current between electronics 120V vs 220V.
This is OK to do without any danger?

Yup, no worries. When I use my genlock to overlay subtitles it is connected with a Clas Ohlson adapter to the 230 volt, while my LD player is running on 100 volt.

so i finally received my CC decoder.
the Hall Research CC-101 decoder is great, it's rigid!
it has great quality manufacture.

i highly recommend a purchase of this decoder if you want subtitles.
now it's much easier to follow and understand the frikkin' movie with subtitles!

Does it allow to move the text up and down in the picture? I'm trying to find one that can do that.

so i bought another Hall 'n' Oates CC decoder  for my 2nd player

on their website, factory has estimated this decoder to work up to 90,000 thousands work hours.
this would be approx 3750 days divided on 24hrs.

when i have reached those 90xxx work hours, what wil happen with this decoder?
decoder self destructs like mission impossible gadgets, do i throw it away or what after 90000 hrs?

it will take me forever to use it for 90000 hours as i rarely watch my movies on LD
