Hey Guys I have started to make a little home theater with what I can find with out spending big $$$.
I have an old projector 4:3 with Svideo and composite outputs, Samsung DVD recorder and a DVL-909.

The setup is DVL-909 - Composite out to DVD recorder - Svideo to projector - 100 inch screen.

Anything else I could do to help the picture ? Maybe a dvd recorder with a 3d comb filter or a better LD player?

Am I crazy trying to stretch this format and maintain any kind of quality to a 100inch screen ?

I would just try to see what is best, you should get a nice image but what is the projector??
You may need to make sure you have a dark room for it, also just adjust and keep adjusting, even try sharpness all the way low it may be your best image.

I'm fine with a DLP 80 inch screen once i adjusted and and kept adjusting.

You can go crazy buying stuff to add on but just try it straight at first then start adding.

The cheapest and best thing you can do is a good color and brightness calibration. Get a calibration laserdisc. The projector settings for laserdisc viewing and other formats (such as DVD, Blu-ray) are going to be different. Not sure what kind of projector you are using but if it's rather old or low quality then that is the first piece of equipment I would look at replacing.

I run my LD player (CLD-D502) through the Focus Enhancements CS-1. It fixes the color bleed and gives a much sharper image. It can even upscale VHS look like DVD. OK, not really, but it does a great job cleaning up the picture before it hits the screen.

A scaler is not going to properly adjust brightness, contrast and color as these factors are determined not just by the source signal but rather by the end display unit output (and even room lighting conditions). Every TV and projector displays color/brightness/contrast/etc differently with the same post scaler video signal. Every setup will benefit from calibration.

A new lamp in the projector can make a huge difference. Older bulbs color shift and can make optimizing the picture difficult.

Thanks for the tips guys. I picked up an Epson 8100 for a great deal and boy did that make a difference!

I like this projector because it still has all the legacy connections. Seems like a lot of the newer projectors are dumping component and s-video.

Looks good  Though closer inspection reveals why in the heyday of CRT projectors equipment like line doublers were an important part of the setup. Well up-scaling still would be important but the technology has changed a bit :)

For the fun of it i experimented a bit feeding the CRT direct, and using the Vidikron VP 400 Quadrupler, and then the Crystalio 2 sending out 1080P 60hz, and there is some purity to the raw laserdisc image, that no scaler can maintain, it all gets to artificial looking.. No matter how you turn it and how you treat it, the image is p**s poor, its simply to low res to make a good image, not even a CRT display can save it, unless you put it on a 19" crt monitor, and sit 4m back.

So even the crystalio 2 is way better in many regards than the VP400, it just dont cut it on a big screen up close.
I have 500-600 laserdisc movies, and love the soundtracks, but simply hate the image quality, where blu ray i love the image on good transfers, but hate the sound tracks.
