I own a 42" tv, I want a 60", when I bring this up to the wife she usually just asks "why".
I asked myself if I knew any females that have bought large screen tvs for themselves and I could not think of any.

Small TVs have been virtually removed from the market. I wanted to get a TV for the kitchen recently and 19" was as small as I could find, which is almost as amazing as the fact that it only cost $60. BTW, where the hell are the pocket HDTVs?

For main viewing I have two 34". A Bravia LCD and a wide Sony HDCRT. Quality is more important than anything and honestly I seriously just don't have room for some of these billboard sized displays and proper speaker placement at the same time and I think they looks absolutely stupid in a living room, like some dude building a canoe in his bedroom. I had a real theater, sure, no problem, but I haven't built it yet.

It really depends on the person. Sounds like your wife simply doesn't care and don't see the need when the 42" already produces a picture that is adequate. More than enough men that doesn't care either. I know of a woman that has a thing for big screen sizes. She recently bought a 75" TV I think it was.

My TVs are below average size for man or woman, from my personal experience. Most of my friends have decided there is an entire wall in their house that they aren't going to use for anything else.

True 32" tvs seem to be the new norm for general usage a good compromise, for a movie experience you just sit closer. I had an early 32" 4/3 hdcrt and I would almost have to sit on top of it to watch a widescreen movie. Where I sit now my eyes are 10 ft. from the screen with the obligatory coffee table in between so I can't move closer, add to that a 42" becomes a 33" when watching a 4/3 academy ratio movie or video.
And yes, I agree sometimes a big screen can be overwhelming especially for things like the news, I think a good compromise would be to have large screen for watching your favorite stuff and a smaller one for everything else. Of course, that would also be hard to pass by the wife. :lol

I am at 8 feet for 60". My goal is 120" constant image height 2.35:1 projector screen at 8-10 feet.

36inch wide CRT seems to be my sweet spot, big enough, but not too big. Never been interested in projectors either, I want maximum quality and accuracy that only a monitor can bring. I wouldn't mind a much smaller pro Sony monitor either..

Well to jump onto a sony battle :wtf:
Sony CRT projectors are alright and will give a nice image, i don't own one as i don't have the space but i've read a lot about them.
If you are on a budget then they are nice to have.

So getting a poor image from a projector is just not true.
I have a DLP and i'm happy with it.

The TV I use most often is still a Sony CRT 28" I bought way back in 2001. I just find it perfect for the room I sit in most often and laserdisc looks great on it.

The other JVC 48" LCD I got back in 2009 is in another room and wall mounted. The proportions seem right because that room is much larger and can easily accomodate 3 large settees and 6000+ LDs without it looking remotely cluttered. If anything the screen might be a little small.

I agree though the craze to fill a room with the largest screen available is often a bad idea if you don't have the space.
It can often end up looking completely overwhelming and ridiculous.

One other thing worth noting is the huge difference in the amount of electricity used by those modern screens over more conventional CRTs. You can literally see the electricity counter turning round when you switch on a large screen. So much for greener energy products, those things are total gas guzzlers!

I'm barely 6ft from a 55" OLED. Would like to get a 65" model someday. UHD-BD is simply so good that you want it as big as possible.

It's true, it's true!...... couldn't help myself, my 42" plasma does use a lot of electricity, 450 watts, makes a good space heater in the winter, not so good during the long hot Florida summers, which now last about nine months. I think the lcds an oleds use a lot less electricity . I'm looking forward to the wall sized tv like the one in Back to the Future Two.

Do you have to turn your head to see the edges of the screen?
