Yeah, I think so too.
Maybe the same for "Bluray audio".
I will try to buy Xenogears version of bluray Audio to see the result, but it seems to be "only" a good mp3 encoding...
We will see...

Oh no, not the same at all. Blu-Ray audio is lossless using 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz linear PCM with option for Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio. This is pretty much as good as SACD but works on BD players that are more common than SACD players.

Some HDTracks release eventually made it to Japanese Blu-Ray audio then SACD.

Example, 2013 Hi-Res files: 6 × File, AIFF, Album, Remastered, 24-bit, 192 kHz
Became a BluRay Audio in 2015: Blue Note ‎– PROZ-4012
And a SACD in 2017: Blue Note ‎– UCGQ-9010

It's never ending...

Since I already own one and I'm not a North American customer, I can pass my pre-order to someone serious about buying one (don't waste it, they sell on eBay for twice this price!). Contact me by PM.

Link expires today, I guess nobody's interested? => got a last minute taker!

MQA interesting for lossless files but not so much on physical media?

I'll skip the whole MQA train but I'm in Tokyo this week-end and the sampler CDs are quite cheap (containing both the CD and the MQA CD) so these will be my only step in MQA territory :-)

The more I read about MQA, the more it sounds like a "Super MP3" format. Instead of taking a CD 16bit/44.1KHz and packing it in a file as much as musically acceptable (MP3), pack as much extra information you can in a standard CDDA (MQA) while retaining some form of backwards compatibility.

Probably an improvement for streaming music in higher quality without dramatically increasing the bandwidth?
But as a physical format, we will probably never hear from it again a year from now.

Julien

Just watched the Techmoan video on this.

To me it sounds like a souped up version of HDCD as it was compressing 20-bit audio down to 16-bit Redbook compatible CD.

Now this MQA is compressing 24-bit audio down to 16-bit Redbook compatible CD.

Unfortunately, the 203 which I have doesn't decode MQA, so I can't take advantage of this.

Though I would have loved to do a side by side comparison of the blu-ray audio version of Supertramp's "Breakfast In America" with the MQA version!

Although I upgraded to the latest firmware for the 205, the player would not detect the MQA flag on the MQA CD... making it sound crappy compared to the Redbook version. :-(

Have you considered contacting Oppo support on that?

I did.

Since I got my player in Singapore, I got the Taiwan firmware and it seems like this one has issues with MQA discs vs. MQA streaming.

Haven't seen an update since June 2018.

So I ended up selling all my MQA discs, losing no $ in the process, and now I can have some relief I didn't waste money on that marketing scam.

Japan music studios are still trying to cram them down their customers' throat.

Good video exposing the fraud that MQA is. Hopefully Tidal will drop its support.

As soon as I heard it was lossy I stayed away from it. My tidal account is set to hi-fi(flac), no master(mqa).

Wow, am I glad I first heard about MQA through these last few posts and that video. So much snake oil out there...

Glad you were able to get out of MQA without any losses Julien.

The whole format sounds like a mess! Hope it fails more miserably than HDCD!
