Post subject:  DVDO iscan VP50 KIA?

So this is just the latest in a string of hardware dying (3 Pioneer LD players the last couple of years, my amp and TV this year - DIY repair)

I come home from my crappy job last night and the only thing I'm looking forward to in life is powering up my AV system and watching a movie in the proper aspect ratio..but my iscan VP50 has turned itself on and is glowing bright blue with no data displayed on the screen. I unplug everything and try to repower it up. Try the hard reset by holding down Menu and Exit while plugging in. Nothing doing. I either get an orange light and a few lines on my TV or the bright blue one with no text on the screen of the unit. The unit just won't display any menus.

I'm lost, any advice?

Also if the unit is really toast is the VP50 the only scaler with 5BNC analogue HD connects?

Sorry to hear about this.
Could it be the power supply??
I have no idea but just tossing out a suggestion.

The Crystalio VPS-2300 and Crystalio II VPS-3300 as well as 3800 have BNC outputs for both RGBHV and YPbPr.

All these failures are highly unusual.
Are you running any kind of PSU (power supply unit) to filter peaks and out of range specs or just trusting the electricity coming from from the wall?

Is Australia power supply known for instability?
Are you using plugs with ground pins?

Thank you for all your replies.

Nissling - Thanks for that, I'll keep the Crystallio units in mind for if I get an inheritence!!

Julien and Reino - After reading a few threads on AVS Forums it looks like it may be the PSU that has blown a cap and is no longer putting out enough power to run the unit properly. I bought the cheapest one I could find because my DVDO came used without any accessories from ebay. Haven't heard AUS power is unstable, I have all my stuff plugged into power boards with surge protectors though.

So I'll try a new PSU and hopefully that works. The only PSU that has the exact specs (6V@7A) is direct from ABT and $$$ but I've been using the cheapy 6V@5A and it's been working fine for over a year.

Is it worth getting the official PSU? Hmmm

edit: So the official DVDO PSUs are made by Sinpro?

I own a drum machine and it was the same, came without a power supply.
When I tested it at home it didn't work with the correct voltage, when I bought the correct made power supply for 15 bucks it worked fine with no issues.
My guess is that it's the same issue and you may want to either get the more expensive one or just cheaper and risk it until the next replacement.

That is if that's the issue.

Well I went with the PSU with the exact specs, spent the extra. I even got express shipping with Amazon and it should be here in Aus in a week. I rolled the dice and hopefully it all works out. Will report back and thanks for the input guys.

It was all good, just got my express amazon PSU (crappily packed of course!)

Official PSU powers up the DVDO and it's fully operational!

Turns out a cap did bust in my cheapo PSU. And I realise now that the old cheapo PSU never actually lit the display fully. Bright and clear now.

I love you DVDO.

However now my MDP-650 is acting up.... it never ends!! hahahaha. It's a golden time in my apartment when everything works at the same time.

Anyway at least this weekend I can enjoy some DVDs in their proper aspect ratio. A Better Tomorrow fortune star release, you're up!! : )

Well that DVDO and power supply should be fine for some time to come.
What is the LD doing??

Yeah, thanks Reino, fingers crossed on the VP-50 lasting a long time into the future now. The PSU seems really solid. I guess you get what you pay for here. I'm really satisfied with my setup for video with the VP-50 and HD CRT combo, it's really all I need, just have to keep it up for as long as possible. Had to revive both in the last month.

My 650 isn't spinning LDs, loads and then gives the "OFF" error message and I have to unplug and restart to eject the LD. It spins and plays CDs fine so I'm guessing grip or belt issue?? I need to search up some basic LD player maintenance threads. I also have an MDP-600 that was DOA from ebay a while ago for possible parts.

I'm using my trusty MDP-355GX single sided player in the meantime, but I like the 650 for dual sided play and slightly better picture and sound imo..

Sounds like the grip, I know you can clean them to work a little longer.
My LDS1 is doing that sometimes, I just need time to open it up and try cleaning it with something.

The rubber on these players have dried up, even my turntable has an idler wheel that slips sometimes, when I give it a turn to help it out it will play but that first
record stalls.

Thanks for your post.

The first thing I did was remove the "top assembly" (what is this called??) and clean the underside of the top clamp. This Sony just has 3 small circular pads on the underside that have moved from their original positions over time. I cleaned them with cotton tips soaked in isopropyl alcohol and it made no difference.

hmmm. Could the answer be to fit a rubber ring, replace the small pads with something similar or clean the bottom clamp as well?
