Been researching genlocks with the aim of adding subtitles to Japanese anime titles. I saw the post on how to use a second CRT to "project" subtitles. Cool idea, but I think I would rather use a genlock setup.

Looking for advice on options for devices. Most setups I have seen use the TVone/Coriogen Eclipse or CS-450 (they seem to be the same device). Some posts indicate they should run under $100 but the cheapest I have seen is $150 with $250-300 more common.

Any recommendations for other devices that are not too expensive? Under a $100 would be ideal. Or maybe that is unrealistic and I should just pay the asking prices.

I too have been thinking about this but don't have any time right now.
I do have an older XP computer that I could run the subs but haven't really figured out how to or again have any time.

Keep us posted if you find out how to do this as I would really love to setup some computer or even cheap projector under my monitor or projector screen.

Will do. What would be great is to hear the makes and models of devices other folks have used and had good luck with. I just found a YouTube video where someone is using an AV Tools AVT-3170 and that device looks to run well: http://www.avtoolbox.com/avt3170.shtml. I can't find one for sale yet, but I will keep looking.

The common software is definitely SubStationAlpha.

Funnily enough I've just been doing a bit of research into this myself.

If you look at that AVT site it links back to the TVone site - I suspect the two units might be very similar????

Yeah looks to be the same company.

Extron is another brand I see alot, but the hook ups don't look appropriate for LD. One would at least need a VGA in for the computer running your subtitle software, s-video or composite video in (from LD player) and either s-video or composite out to the TV.

Some 'scan converters' have genlock inputs - but this is only for syncing all the video equipment in a studio.

What you need is a unit with genlock (syncs the two signals) and overlay/keying to place the subtitles. There are some newer TVone units with these capabilities but probably more rather than less expensive (a few quick looks and I haven't seen any of the overlay capable versions for sale yet). Then there are some overlay/keying units for sale but they don't have PC input - only for composite/s-video sources.

Actually here's one:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/tvONE-1T-C2-150-Video-Scaler-Down-Converter-with-Overlay-/222536666707?epid=1905396907&hash=item33d0380e53:g:yeAAAOSw8HBZNnR3

But I'll be passing at that kind of price!!

Makes sense. Good point.

Yeah the prices on these are nuts.

This one might work: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PC-VGA-To-Video ... SwstxVHcRh

The case of this device looks a lot like that AVT-3170 model I mentioned earlier. TVone clearly has the market on these cornered.

I'm not going to do the second TV with mirror but don't mind if I have to use a second monitor.
That type of thing is just a little too much for me to spend on a fun hobby setup that I won't really use that often.

Will still keep an eye on this topic as I would still like to tinker with the idea of doing something with this.

Can someone link me to the optical setup? I may want to try that.

So after a bit of hunting around during the afternoon managed to pick one of these up for $80US!

TVOne Task 1T-C2-150 http://www.tvone.com/Attachment/DownloadFile?downloadId=92

Now just need to sort out some software and subtitle files - no doubt once it gets here I'll be tinkering for hours!

Nice and congrats! Looking at the spec sheet, that model will work nicely. They sell an IR remote control which you can use to adjust the settings easier and even control the position of the subtitles. Model number is IRC-5.

Will you be using SubStationAlpha? If so, let me know where you can source some subtitles.

Currently don't have a PC set up to run SubStationAlpha, though I did find a link Publius posted to some old subs for the Ghibli box set.

At the suggestion of Samuron http://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=6989 I downloaded Penguin subtitle player to give it a go. Apparently it can play .ssa files as well as .srt; so far can't get it to play either!! Probably doing something really simple wrong - that will take me ages to figure out!!!

If you hadn't found it already this thread is most definitely worth a read: Guide to making Japanese anime releases English friendly

I did read it, and thank you for adding it here. My hope is we can get a single thread with all the relevant info in it for future folks looking at genlocks.

Do now have Penguin playing back both .srt and .ssa files.

For some reason with "Use Detected Encoding" selected in the settings (which is the default) the files won't play. If it's unchecked and I manually select "UTF-8" (the default on the manual selection list) then at least some of them work. The Ghibli ones mentioned above still don't seem to work with this method - but then again I didn't try all the possible encoding formats - it's a very long list. Whether the files are not compatible, or I just need to find the right encoding type to apply, I don't know yet - more work is needed!.

Would it be helpful to convert them perhaps?

Well it might....

But I just got SubStationAlpha working on Windows 10. You could say I'm just a little bit excited...... The Ghibli subs that wouldn't play on Penguin - playing fine in SSA now!!!! Can't wait for the genlock to show up now :D :D

At first glance this looks to be a very powerful piece of software, with editing/timing capabilities and even the ability to directly control Multigen/Deltascan genlocks. Literally just managed to get it installed and working at 3:50am Sunday here!! Not about to thoroughly explore it now - had all the 'win' needed for the day, but will certainly be checking it out further over the next few days and weeks.

This I want to hear more about  I've been trying but without any success so far. Are you running 32 or 64 bit Win 10?

I picked up a Corio CS-450 Eclipse a while back but haven't had time to experiment with it yet. On a side note, does anybody have any good sources for subtitles (except for subs.com.ru)? I know that 10 - 15 years ago there were tons of LD subs floating around but I can't find even half of them now.

I was able to get SSA running in a Windows XP VM no problem. Haven't tested it as I still looking for a genlock.

My thought was to locate SRT files and try to convert them to SSA? But obviously a source for older LD SSA files would be preferable.
