I actually once spend hours setting up a plate camera and took a 5x4 shot of a laserdisc image of the TV screen. The shot was amazing but not something I'd do again anytime soon. i think it was around 1996 when I got my 1st widescreen LCD. Before then I wouldn't have even tried that one.

Just checking. I got my 1st widescreen tv (philips ) the beginning of 1998 so that 4x5 must have been done that year. It was a 28" screen and if I remember right it cost me over £1500 at the time. How times have changed. I can now get a 55" OLED for £2000 from Panasonic. I think 1996 was the 1st time I saw a widescreen TV in action. A mate of mine had got a plasma. I dread to think what money it cost. It was a beast of a TV. I think he imported it from Japan.

On youtube a while back I saw a Tarantino documentary where he is interviewed presumably in his house, he shows clips of movies on what looks like a widescreen crt, this was from 93-94 I believe pre Pulp Fiction. I was interested in what model it may have been, also looked for signs of LD reference but didn't catch any.

I think at least as far as the USA only was concerned they did do a few widescreen CRT HD TV's from Sony but there were never any done in the UK or Europe. The widescreen CRT was only ever a USA feature and I'll pretty sure it was mainly Sony who did them.

I just don’t remember any LCDs that didn’t totally suck before like...2002 at least. Early LCD was totally worthless. I have a Bravia from like 2006 that’s pretty good. Before that it was like...blurry washed out crap, apparently one shade of red and two green, twice as expensive per inch as a CRT that looked twice as good.

There are Toshiba, JVC, and others I’m sure. Honestly though in the CRT days Sony was usually an extremely safe bet. I have the XBR960, the fanciest thing they ever sold in the US tube-wise. It’s 16:9, 720p, 34”, HDMI, digital tuner, it’s ridiculous. Even the speakers are great. I’m so grateful my new 4K Sony seems to do a very good job with LD because I’ve been dreading what to do as far as replacing the 250lb tube when it dies. Absolutely nobody will service it and it’s an extinct beast but it’s fantastic for LD.

First time I saw a widescreen CRT was around 1995? or possibly a little later, it was around when they were re-releasing the star wars films.
Bang and Olfson had it in their window, it was a expensive and only a 26 inch, I want to say it was about 2 grand, but I could be wrong and it may
have been more expensive.

Australia lucked out, we got made in japan 32 and 36 inch wide CRTs from Sony in about 2005. We also had Panasonic wide CRTs and a few other manufacturers at the time.

I bought a Sony KVHR-36 M31 on gumtree for $100 5 years ago. Best thing I've ever bought. The last TV I'll need realistically. Had to replace the some chips last year that fire it up but she's still got a beautiful picture

Only thing is I have to move in the next couple of months. Moved house with it 3 times already and it's survived but not looking forward to those looks on the mover's faces again..

My biggest problem is that my LCD's are coming to the end of their lives. So it means whatever state of the art TV I get won't have S-VHS inputs so that means an expensive upscaler for my laserdisc machines. And I'd say Easter is when I'll have to change over.

Well as long as you have a SCART connector, you can send S-Video signal through it just the same. If nothing else, you can get one of those adapters to do it.

How? Surely you need a S-VHS to HDMI adapter. No modern TV's have S-VHS inputs anymore of any sort.

You are talking about S-Video connector, right

LD will be better with composite unless you have a really high end player.
This wasn't the case for me with CRT but now with all the other types of monitors and projectors you are better off with the Yellow composite.

On another note, as long as TVs have the cable/antenna coax connector we will be fine, just pickup some RCA to coax adapters and you can still get an image.

Real problem are the player not how to connect to the TVs. :|

I have x9's and S9's so quality would certainly be a factor for me.

I meant a SCART connector on the TV.

...they still have those, right?

Yes but none of my players have scart and even if they did there would still be no S-VHS input on the modern TV itself

You can still hook an S-video cable from the player to a SCART adapter which then connects to the TV. And even if the regular yellow composite cable is better, like rein-o said, the SCART adapters have those, too.

Unless your new TV doesn't have SCART. In which case I'm really starting to hate the future.

I'm pretty sure most new TV's still have scart
