I was rummaging through a thrift store today and found a strange, white box. It was a Sony MBD-XBR950. I had no idea what it was, it had Digital Media Receiver and WEGA Engine printed on it. $20 with a three-day return policy so I bought it. I got it home, disconnected the Lumagen Vision HDP, and plugged it in between the CLD-79 and the Canon X700. I didn't have a remote, so I fumbled through the menu until I found the correct input setting, and a picture appeared. A really amazing picture! I don't know what this thing was made for, but it has a great 3D comb filter in it. I'm using composite in and DVI out, adjusted it to 4:3, with max noise reduction. The picture is brilliant.
Please let me know if you find a manual for it, and/or you want to buy a Vision HDP.

It looks like it was always bundled with a SONY screen, explaining why you can't find a manual for it online easily. => https://docs.sony.com/release/KDE55XBR950.pdfSONY APPLIANCE MODEL NO. Thanks. Makes sense now. It's like the guts of a Sont Wega without the screen. This is by far the best my LDs have ever looked, and projected at 110". Here are the published features:
WEGA Engine™: Delivers superb picture quality from any video source by minimizing the signal deterioration caused by digital-to-analog conversion and stabilizing the signal processing. This engine features unique Sony technology, including: • The first step in the digital processing system, Composite Component Processor2 (CCP2), which enhances input signal to noise ratio by chroma decoder digital processing; • DRC® (Digital Reality Creation)-MF V1: Unlike conventional line doublers, the DRC Multifunction feature replaces the signal’s NTSC waveform with the near-HD equivalent by digital mapping processing. The DRC Palette option lets you customize the level of detail (Reality) and smoothness (Clarity) to create up to three custom palettes. • Multi-Image Driver (MID™-XU): Allows you to watch two programs side by side (Twin View™). You can watch pictures from two different sources (1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i) simultaneously. Only the left Twin View window can display 1080i, 720p, and 480p sources. • Newly developed PDP driver IC: Achieves high-precision gamma characteristics, using Sony’s unique digital technology. Fine gradation of dark scenes, which is not possible with conventional PDP, is realized by greatly enhancing resolution in the low brightness range. - BN Smoother™: Reduces the block noise caused by digital video encoding and decoding process. - CineMotion™: Provides an optimized display by automatically detecting film content and applying a reverse 3/2 pulldown process. Moving pictures will appear clearer and more natural-looking. - Wide Screen Mode: Watch conventional 4:3 aspect ratio broadcasts in wide screen (16:9) mode

They even have codes for the remote controls to turn it compatible with 3 brands of LD players: - SONY = 701
- PANASONIC = 704,710
- PIONEER = 702

Getting something better than a Lumagen for $20, you made off like a bandit. I want one of those too now

I guess since I have an actual XBR (KVHR) I don't need one of these. Thank you God. I'm not religious. but if there is a God I want to thank him for my video hardware.

I think your problem is the 900, I can't believe no one talks about the huge chunk of the image that they cut off on the right side...
Anyone know what resolution it outputs and is it adjustable? Well, like I said, the box did the same thing when I plugged in a DVD recorder via component, so it's not the LD player. As far as the resolution goes, I'm surmising that since the Plasma monitor it was specifically made for had a native resolution of 1365x768, that's the resolution it outputs.

Have you tried putting the XBR950's signal through a scaler to rectify the distorted portion of the widescreen image? I don't have any standalone scalers other than DVD recorders. And none of those take HDMI or DVI as an input

Either way I'm excited to test this, I've always thought there was a cheap LD holy grail box out there and this sounds promising.

It does, but the box (thankfully accessible on the unit itself--remote not necessary) has settings you can toggle so you can display a 4:3 image normally (ie: sideboxed) while the display reads it as 1365x768 16:9
