Hi Julien and Everyone,

I hate to have to report this, but the problem :problem: we had some time ago with the apostrophe has returned. It's possible that it never truly went away, but I hadn't noticed it again until recently. It's certainly not as bad as it once was. At least that is something to be thankful for, what with Thanksgiving coming soon! The problem now seems to be isolated in the updates to existing titles, i.e. it is not affecting new title submissions as it once was. The specific examples I can point to in my own update submissions are those I did recently for "Lena's Holiday" and "Our Mother's Murder". These have not been validated yet, and are in the "pending updates" section. It seems that anytime one submits an update to an existing listing with an apostrophe in the title, the system adds a backslash (\) right before the apostrophe for some unexplained reason. Has anyone else noticed this? I suppose that this is a problem which doesn't come up too often, as there are only a limited number of titles which include an apostrophe. I was optimistic that we had finally beaten this nagging problem into submission, but it seems to have reared its' ugly head once again. I felt that it was worth mentioning again here. At least it is not running rampant the way it once was. Perhaps we can have one more go at it, and hopefully vanquish it from the site forever! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Regards,
David :)

I submitted an update for Let's Nupunupu [FLLF-8546] a while ago, and in my pending updates list the title is displayed as " Let\'s Nupu Nupu ", so yeah I see that problem too.

Just noticed this problem on 3 updates I submitted recently:

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/update/71 ... -All-(1985)

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/update/71 ... %281993%29

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/update/71 ... %281987%29

Only happens in the 'International Title' field, not the 'Original Title' field (see 3rd example).

This was using Firefox 15.0.1. I haven't tested with any other browsers so far.

... and how it's back at ALL levels since I upgraded the PHP version.

There must be some "escape all entities for safety" set by default now and I'm escaping the escaped ones once more

Code review ASAP! Right now I turned ON a lot of debug/logs and I'm fine-tuning the new server.

Julien

Played a little more with the ' " \ issue on submitted titles, it should be much better now.

Also the "Misc notes" will not get lost during an Expert insert if any error is detected when clicking on "Submit".
I know it must be very frustrating to lose all your hard entered notes without a warning :-(

Ooh, searching for "Y's", I discovered that, each time I changed from one page to the next of the results, it added another "/" to the search string, until it stopped working at all.

Yes this problem has been with us forever.

Looks like you're incorrectly MySQL-style escaping the search string when generating the URL for the next page. This shouldn't need MySQL-style escaping, just URL encoding. If you're not explicitly escaping anything, it could be caused by PHP Magic Quotes, one of the most insidious, ridiculous and pure evil features known to man (but this is PHP, so that should come as no surprise). If it does turn out to be this, I would recommend disabling PHP Magic Quotes, but the fact that it's enabled already possibly means that there's something relying on it that would become a security vulnerability were it disabled, so tread with extreme caution.

Actually this one was fixed when I fine-tuned the search engine back in August to allow for natural and logical searches.
