Post subject: Any A/V receivers made with AC-3 and HDMI inputs? Posted: 19 Feb 2013, 04:47 |
|
Hey guys I am wanting to get a nice THX A/V receiver for my home theater. I have a nice Pioneer laserdisc player with the AC-C output. I also have a Pioneer Elite DVD player that up converts and a nice LG Bluray player. My current A/V receiver is a Pioneer AHK-1019 that has HDMI inputs and outputs. I like the receiver but would love to find an older THX receiver that has HDMI and AC-3. Does anyone know if something like this was made and if so who made them and what are the model numbers?
Thanks, Paul Kepner

Are there any nice THX receivers with AC-3 input that at least have component in and out? I want to get one to run my laserdisc player with. It seems as thought the stand along decoders cost almost as much as the older receivers I have found. I can't seem to find a receiver that decodes THX and AC-3. I would prefer Pioneer since most of my equipment is that but I am open to other good makes and models.
Thanks again! Paul Kepner

Thanks again! Paul Kepner Hi Paul, if i may suggest, look here: http://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=266 That's a list with all units that have an AC3-RF input. With a little research maybe you'll find the AVR that perfectly fits your needs /wishes and harmonize with your existing components. Thanks to this list i've found mine, too. Most of the Pioneer AVR's listed there are THX certified, have component in/out but no Decoders for HD-audio. Maybe the Pioneer SC-09TX is the "Highlander"-one with HDMI. BIG THANKS to tkmedia for his efforts

THX features range from things like specially cooked flavors of Dolby Pro Logic to certain equalization features to "nothing but a logo" depending on the player. There is nothing "THX" on the discs and therefore nothing to decode.
...as far as I know anyway. You are correct - THX technologies applied to the surrounds, like timbre matching, are psychoacoustically incorrect, as is the adaptive decorrelation of the surrounds - and most films do not need re-EQ and for those that do, most non-THX receivers have an equivalent circuit. There is no such thing as THX encoding nor is it a format of any kind. It's something that is simply not needed on a receiver. The THX badge doesn't imply build quality either - while the THX standards for amps and such are stringent, they do not guarantee that the amp is built well. THX is a marketing program - it started out with some truly admirable goals but the desire to make more money destroyed the brand. Tom Holman, the inventor of THX, left the THX company because they were licensing VHS and Pan/scan transfers - and computer speakers and car stereos.

Yup - Although my main receiver is a Denon AVR-3808 (I have yet to update the firmware in it to the Audyssey Volume and other new features Denon added), I still use my Pioneer VSX-9300 from 1988, which was the first receiver to have Pro-Logic built in, and also still use my VSX-D1S receiver from 1991 - the amp's power on relays in the D1S are getting slow, taking a few minutes to click on, but its okay otherwise and the digital DSP-based Pro-Logic decoding still sounds great (it uses fixed 18-bit 44.1k DSP processing which outdid Lexicon's DSP at the time). Plus the preamp in's and out's make both receivers very useful for extra power amplification when needed.
You can get Denon's AVR-3800 for a few hundred dollars on eBay now - it was Denon's very top receiver in the early 2000's and has AC-3 RF, DTS-ES, THX, etc... Plus a touch screen remote. Superbly engineered and sounds great - and I've seen them go for less than $400 - I think they cost $4,000 originally. Although they won't do True HD and DTS-HD or have HDMI, they have component and every other type of input/output - especially ones that matter for LaserDisc. Gobs of power too.
