Are the individual Japanese "Special Collection" editions of the 3 orignal Star Wars films the absolute best quality pressings overall on LD? I've been hearing a lot of discussion lately about how superior the transfers are compared to the much later Definitive/Faces editions which as most know used a lot of early practices of DNR which hasn't aged well, especially when viewed today on modern HDTVs or projectors.

Also, since the 2006 DVDs essentially ported over the non-anamorphic letterbox transfers from the LD Definitive/Faces editions with only a slight boost in image quality, does that mean that the Japanese "Special Collection" LD editions are better than even the 2006 DVDs as well?

Yes they don't have ee or dnr. That's for sure. I have every ws release of star wars except vhs and pal releases. I always wanted to compare them I never did. Faces clv discs have more dnr than definitive cav set. I believe they all have aliasing issues on several scenes but a bit more on the special set?

I can't answer yet I have to watch all and compare. But it is a good candidate due to lack of dnr and ee.

It took me awhile to find it but here are some comparisons I posted in another thread. Top is JSC, bottom is the DC, both are CAV.

Hi alien, bguzman, Jonah184 & Substance,

Thank you

I appreciated the photo of all three Movies laid out the the screen shots look interesting, some differences there.

I have yet to pay for the Japanese pre-remastered box set / but do have the Japanese Remastered Box / US / and Definitive x2 boxes.

I shall have to give these a spin at some stage again.

I really appreciate the alternative cover art and OBI strips on the Japanese titles, as these are really collectible indeed.

Thank you for sharing guys.

Kind Regards to all

:D

Hi. The website http://www.originaltrilogy.com has a lot of discussion about the many problem with the DVNR smear used on the Definitive Collection CAV and CLV THX Laserdiscs. I believe they have screenshots there as well. Some of the worst problems include a four-eyed stormtrooper in the desert, "Look, sir. Droids." and a horizontal band of distortion all the way across the frame during the Death Star trench battle, a shot with Vader's TIE fighter and two other TIE fighters.

Maybe something is wrong with me, but the color of the DC version in the screenshots is more appealing to me.

Blasphemy! Heresy! ;) JK
No, I'm not one of those who says that what I like is "right" or the original is the only true and correct way. This is the USA baby, like and watch what appeals to you the most.

Try watching this clip which compares the 2: http://thestarwarstrilogy.com/starwars/media/Speeder-Compare-JSC-Definitive.mp4

Right click the video and 'save video as' to watch a better quality version of the clip above via your HDD.

That is is exactly what I see on my screen with all three JSC pressings. Much more natural color and no smear.

In those last screen caps, the Special Collection color looks better to me. The DC almost seems to have a red tint.

The special collection definitely has a yellow tint compared with the pink tint on the DC. It is also noisier. Not necessarily a bad thing as it may give slightly more detail and the lack of noise on the DC May be down to Noise Reduction which softens the image. Does anyone know if the US and Japanese DC are the same transfer? I'm comparing the JSC and Japanese DC here.

The basic way to understand the JSC versus the DC and its later variants (Faces, 2006 DVD), is that the DC was sourced from a faded interpositive and then subjected to all kinds of early 90's video processing that resulted in a washed out and very drab looking image that not only lost massive details in the dnvr and heavy motion smearing but also lost much of the original color.
The JSC was the first ever widescreen issue of the films, and essentially re-used for the original US letterboxed LDs which share the same color. (All except for the Technidisc re-pressed disc for the first film. The original WS disc had the ratio shrink problem, and for some unknown reason Technidisc stuck a new master from a superior source.)

If you're looking for the untouched original films in the best possible quality on an official release, and like LD, you will want the JSC and/or US Technidisc. The US letterboxed CLV discs are very near in quality and appear to be the same transfer. That gets you pretty close without the higher pricetag.
I have yet to find the ESB and ROTJ JSCs but there are many samples and several fan preservations out there for these rare discs.

The first time you watch any of these pre-DC discs, I tell you your head will explode. IMHO the closest one can get to the original experience on disc.

Those screenshots are great and appreciated. I do prefer the Japan Special Collection versions over the Definitive Collection versions (either CAV or FACES CLV). To me, that shot of Han and Leia in Jabba's palace where Han has just been revived is just too dark, to the point to where the contrast is too washed out. And I agree there is too much red tint.

Does anyone have screenshots from the CBS/Fox Special Widescreen Editions for comparison? They are lower in resolution than the Japan Special Collection. I just wish that either of those versions had Jedi letterboxed properly in the center of the screen. Both have the picture too far towards the top. That was one thing the Definitive Collections did better but I still prefer the others.
