Good evening Kris, I have a TOSHIBA HD-AX2 HD DVD Player from new, built like a TANK, and shall be looking at purchasing a back up of the same at some stage. Software 4.0 full upgrade at the time. This player is also a great sounding Audio player, however my only nag is that the front drop down drawer flap is a little irritating on ejecting the drawer. I would never part with this player, as this was their last quality player product. Kind Regards to you

I got it delivered at my doorstep for a steal... 44 usd all included. Mint looking player with remote and manual. Not even a blemish to detect. It ran on Firmwire 2.2. Did the 4.0 update and it's all It was a "used" demo. I can't resist getting an hddvd player this cheap. These first gen players are solid buid quality. PCM decoder is top notch. I input 1080i in the Marantz receiver and output this at 1080p 24fr. had the marantz do 4k last week. Great but at 4k resolution image tends to stutter a bit. 4K 30/50/60 isn't that great after all. Oh well, I'm a happy hddvd owner in the end.

The EP30 looks good enough for me. To be honnest, I've had bad luck with ep-30, ep-35 players. They froze towards the end of the movie. I really hated that So far ' and after years of trial' I find the HD-XA1 and A1 the most reliable players if they run FW 4.0 All discs I own spin. Some of them are very slow loaders but they work in the end and that's what it's all about. a nice used HD-A1 can be found dead cheap on ebay etc... the latest "final" fw 4.0 can be found trough ebay from a seller known as Jaybacon! I've purchased all my 4.0 FW discs from him. There is a chance you could download the last FW from the Toschiba site but myself I'm a litlle clumsy when it comes to computer related things... I hate Zip files etc... I may have had bad luck with my players but I wouldn't spend much on one of the EP range models... you never know if it's a reliable one in the end. Anyway, That's only my advice

integra wrote: I don't have any problems with the Ep30 and EP35..... Only with most of the Warner Brothers discs. All others play fine, regardless of the firmware. Had a WB disc that wouldn't play on my Toshiba but worked on my LG... But that same disc doesn't play on my LG anymore... So I am 100% sure it's not a problem of the players, but a problem of the discs In my experience there is nothing wrong with a Warner title if it's a European release... Matrix etc, they all work fine. Us Warner discs however... I avoid them. Own a few US Warner discs myself. I am Legend comes to mind! Top notch PQ and sound. No problems so far, fingers crossed Nice to read someone has good working EP players. I've had bad luck with them. Sooner or later they all failed to play an entire movie. I do miss the Dolby Digital + bitstream function on the ep-35. I loved the DD+ logo on the amp Oh well, PCM decoded output for me

I'm quite sure it's FW 4.0. Haven't used my E1 for at least five years so I have no idea if it still works.

Just checked the firmware and apparently it's FW 2.0 so I'll update it right away. Tried three HD-DVDs, none of them played at all (Dune, Lost in Translation and Zodiac, all of which I've seen on the A1 before). Regular DVDs can still be played with no issues however. In fact I'd say the A1 is great for DVDs. Always liked that player, even though it's really slow at start. EDIT: Updated and Lost in Translation is currently playing. Awesome!

Yes the HD DVD is my favorite version of 2001 ASO. I like it better than the BD, Dolby Dolby TrueHD (48kHz,24-bit) vs. LPCM 5.1 (48kHz, 16-bit). Pan's Labyrinth is one of the few HD DVDs with DTS HD Master Audio 7.1 which my A35 can bitstream.

I have two players, my first was when the thing first came out and I just HAD to be on board because I found a Panasonic HDTV 1080i rear projection tv...but still had my old Dish Network setup--and I wanted to see what REAL HDTV looked like..
so I dished out 325 bucks at the local electronics store for my HD DVD Toshiba H1 D1KN...which would not play King Kong when I got it and I was appalled...
About six months later the lady at the store calls me, and says "well if you haven't heard the HD DVD format is now deceased...so we have a 1080P player if you want it...100 bucks. So, I went down there and got it..sure glad I did! It was an HD A20 and it has been an awesome player all the way around.
The main issue I have had with my first player has been a lack of "um-ph" when I hook up the HDMI to the TV and I have to use a switch or even put it through the Sony receiver...it takes two or three times on and off to get it to power through..not sure what kind of HDMI help I can use on it but it just isn't very good.
Anyone else with those problems with a H1 model?
