foolish, condescending question to ask, i suppose, but have you taken some Q-tips doused in 90%+ Iso Alcohol to the contact pins?

Not a silly question at all. It can be easy to miss, yet simple to fix. However, I have already done so. It is a habit I have, so did it right away since it as a routine procedure. Do it to new and old carts.

Today I replaced the battery in my Memory Card. Not the best looking job, but it does work. This is actually the 2nd attempt, since the first battery exploded because of the heat. A bit difficult to solder on the legs I ripped off the old dead battery. The solder doesn't stick very well to the CR2016 batteries. Nothing flux can't fix, though...

I am working on it.
KOF 2000 & KOF 2001 are already on the way.
Then I only need KOF 2002 & KOF 2003.

Got a MVS that I ordered from eBay. Grabbed the first consolized one I found just so I had something plug'n'play. Going to rebuild it later the way I want it. For some reason the image is cropped on the left side, which is annoying. This happens both on my plasma and my CRT. I do have a PVM as well, but it does not have RGB input, so I'm unable to connect the MVS to it for now.

Plugged in my flash cart, and it actually worked! Guess it isn't compatible with my AES setup then after all. Only trouble I'm having now is some minor glitching that looks like dropouts on laserdiscs. There supposedly is a firmware fix for that, but it is only distrubuted to a select few through PMs on a forum.

Nice, I'm sure you'll figure out how to lose the cropping somehow. How many games are on there?

How much did it set you back? Maybe you could ask for a partial refund if that wasn't mentioned in the listing?

The cart holds the entire game library plus a bunch of other stuff like hacks, bootlegs, prototypes and such. It uses flash, so changing games can be a bit slow. The largest games, like KOF2002 I think it was, can take up to 4 minutes to load. Most games take like a minute or so, if not less. Once it is flashed, it does act like a legit cart. Instant boot into the flashed game everytime you fire up the console. If you also have a hacked BIOS and run the checksum, the games will show up as OK. A couple will show up bad, but still run, because the actual protection circuit hasn't been reverse-engineered and implemented. A very handy device for sure. I'm also intrigued that it makes homebrews to be much more easily made and run on the system. I'm sure this is a very exciting time in the Neo Geo community for many people.

I already figured out the "dropout" glitch issue. It turned out the updated firmware did get released public very recently. After running the update, the issue went away. The cropping seems to be more of bad luck with the TVs I own. Some are more picky than others, as the signals from the Neo Geo isn't broadcast standard. The CRT doesn't crop as much as the plasma. The plasma also have a little bit of wavy edges on the graphics, almost like dot crawl. As far as I understood, the cropping issue is because the sync signal is a little bit offset in comparison to the actual center of the image. Thus making it offset and cropped by the overscan. I did read about someone making a circuit with a potentiometer to manually adjust the position of the image. Haven't found anyone that sell it, nor any circuit diagrams. If I connect the MVS through my XRGB Framemeister that I bought in Japan, the image is centered correctly and not cropped.

I imagine that if you run KOF 98 you'll be even more cropped since that game is wider than anything else I have. Since adjusting the image on an actual MVS machine is super easy it never was a problem for operators.

Nice details Samaron. I guess this thing takes AES sticks as well? Maybe something like this is the only way I'll ever actually experience most of the games I always wanted to play on the system? Then again maybe I'll win the lottery or my parents will die and my inheritence will pay for the actual AES carts..

Almost bought one of those Neo Geo X Gold packs when they were in stores here but the reviews were so bad..

There was announced an AES version of the cart as well, that will ship this month. When I bought this MVS cart in November, it was said that no AES version were planned at the moment. They're a bit expensive, cost around 400 euro and can be bought here. Considering how expensive MVS and especially AES games are, it isn't that bad of a deal. The Neo Geo platform is also very complicated, which is why any proper flash carts have been unavailable for so long. The company said that if you flash 10 games a day, it will last for about 30 years before it reaches the estimated amount of reflashes it is designed for. So the flash memory should last a while. If you just want to play games, this is definitely the way to go. I'm not going to get rid of the games I already own, but I'm sure some people dump their collection.

Edit: Yes, the MVS is wired up to use AES joysticks. :)

Did a couple of mods to my MVS today. I am preparing to get a new case built for it, so have taken a lot of measurements of the various buttons and connectors. While I were at it, I also removed the old battery and disabled the charging circuit for it (had to remove three components besides the battery). The plan is to install a battery holder that has two AA batteries. I also soldered the crystal casing to the wire holding it in place. The reason is that it didn't have a proper connection, resulting in an occational CRC error when flashing games. I also built a small amp that mixes the three channels into stereo. This board only has a mono amp. The bonus with this separate amp is that by disabling the on-board amp, the board is also converted to 5 volt only.

Wow. Your collection is getting pretty amazing. Hopefully when my parents die I'll get some money and I can build on my comparitively meagre collection
