There are four DiscoVision package types: 1. Large Open-top Box 2. Open-top Box 3. Side-open Sticker 4. Printed For some titles some are more rare than others. Would it be possible to include some words when a seller is listing a title to suggest they include the package type? It would reduce unnecessary PMs considerably. Thanks!

Same jacket as anything. There are several different package types and many titles were released in more than one. Boxes are internally hinged and flip open to expose the disc(s) inside. Jackets are, of course, what you'd expect. Before they started printing unique jackets for each title, they made generic packages and printed stickers to adhere to them. The stickers stretched from front to back and would be in the shape of a square with a long triangle on top if you were to remove them. This means that one sticker contains the "V artwork" on the front, the title that shows on the spine, and the information that is on the back. The "Regular Open-Top Box"These replaced the large ones (see below) for 3 disc titles and were used for 3, 2, and 1 disc titles until some point in 1979.Front: https://i.imgur.com/AcztDHs.jpgBack: https://i.imgur.com/H090LWN.jpgThe "Large Open-Top Box"These were used for 3 disc titles at launch. They are presented here next to rounded ones for comparison.Comparison 1: https://i.imgur.com/OYLN46c.jpg (Lonely Are The Brave) The "Printed Jacket"These are basically modern LD jackets with DiscoVision styling. No sticker was used and the jackets are completely smooth.

rein-o wrote: While its amazing how old this topic is and sad that the pics are gone. Do you need pics so you know what you are selling??? I doubt any real discovision collectors will not know what version of outer packaging they may want or need and there really isn't much or any of a difference in value for the different sleeves.
But if you want to see what they look like again its a shame those pics aren't available. Nah, not selling anything.... more so I have a better understanding of what I have in my own collection. I only have 2 Discovision titles at the moment (though several others are in my Wantlist) one being Jaws - and I specifically was looking out for as early a copy as possible when I bought it, though without any real knowledge of packaging variations at the time beyond printed boxes and the generic ones with the printed “v” stickers... so I’d definitely want to know which open-top variation I ended up with. I don’t collect discovision on a hardcore level or anything, but it would be good to have that type of institutional knowledge documented somewhere anyway. The nerds who “just know” won’t be around forever.

rein-o wrote: LOL yes I understand.
As for covers I really can't say as I've only had the thinner box sets and 2 disc sleeves which look lie normal sleeves. the top open boxes are thick enough to hold 2 discs nicely but sometimes hold 3 and really are squeezed in.
Sorry I can't help more, I can try to add pictures of the sleeves I own later.
Here are 2 pictures, I hope they help.
The only types of sleeves I have are these and then 1 later which is thin and holds a single disc like regular sleeves.
First picture has the top edge of 3 films, one is a 2 disc in a box set, 3 disc in the same size box set and a 2 disc in a sleeve. So my understanding is that they would have a thicker box then went to the smaller box sets then sleeves.
The second picture is of the box open, it really opens like a pizza box or if the label was turned it would open like a normal hinged box set. Thank you for this! Do you happen to know if this style of box is what is referred to upthread as “large open-top” or if it’s “regular open-top” ? My CAV Jaws (3 LDs) is in this generic open top style with the printed artwork on the “V” sticker. Discs in felt-like inner sleeves. But without anything to definitively compare it to I am not sure if it is the larger or standard sized open-top box. Would it be correct to assume that the larger style open top boxes are earliest? Ultimately I want an example of what the format/packaging was like in the earliest days of the 1978 Atlanta test-market

Here are some photos from my collection of large open-top boxes next to regular open-top ones. Yes. The general trend is: Earliest [Large open-top → Regular open-top → Side-open sticker (square) → Side-open sticker (rounded) → Printed] Latest With that being said, regular open-top boxes were available at launch too. One of the best indicators of a release being " early" is that the copyright notice on the front on the lower right will be in the form of a small sticker rather than printed directed on the box.

Thanks a ton for this! It’s interesting to see the thicker box side by side with the standard, it looks to be about 1.5x the width… upon closer inspection of my copy of Jaws i guess I would have to say it is in the regular sized open top box. Especially considering the 3 discs are a fairly tight fit, can’t imagine the box getting any smaller and still holding the contents. Copyright notice is directly printed... would you say this definitively rules it out as being from 1978?
