I still use a suite of Sony Discmans I've had for years.

Anyone else here into em?

My pride and joy is my D777, with ESP disabled and MDR-EX700 IEMs it sounds so perfect.

My DE-01/DE-J01s win with cool factor but no defeatable ESP is a big negative. They just don't sound that sweet. Still kick the a** of any phone with stock earphones and crappy sources.

I want to give my babies the best and was looking at Sony IMR AA batteries (VTC5). Would anyone know if they are safe for Discman use? They're rated for 3.7v but my discmen usually only operate on 1.2v regular AAs.

Bad idea to use some 3.7v IMRs or would the Discman only draw what it needs?

I no longer have any decent functioning portable CD players but I have enjoyed many. I still have my MZ-R90 "MD Walkman" that I use when I'm pissed off at my iPhone.

I have half a dozen MD walkmans, been listening since early 90s. Some still work, some don't. My deck is fully functional though and a great DAC for CDs..

Could any electrical engineers here give any advice on voltage? Will a device just use the voltage it needs or can it be overloaded by these high voltage capable IMR batteries?

I,ve got a Sony D99 that i purchased for fl. 509, - (a few hundred dollars or something) in 1991 when i was a teenager.
Unfortunately since a few years ago, it won't spin up.
It was a nice discman with metal parts and nice lit front display. I didn't have a cd player, so this was portable as well as attached to my old receiver when i got home.
It had a headphone socket with extra pins for a proprietary headphone. Unfort. that headphone the plastic earpieces disintegrated over the years rendering it unusable.
One specialty of the discman was that you could skip (not program unfort.) indices!
Cds don't only have chapters, but also sub chapters or indices. Mostly a 2 second pre index or a deliberate funky pregap at some special cds and then the song at index 1.
Now more than 2 subchapters or indices were rarely used in cds. Players that display them, well, around late 80's i, ve seen a bunch of players that did display indices, even some of my CDV players (that are from 1988) do. But options of using it,... very few. Besides my discman i haven't seen many or i don't know.
I only own 2 cds with that feature.
One double cd of Carmina Burana and one from J M Jarre, Revolutions i think
Chapter 1: "Industrial Revolution" – 16:33
Index 1: "Overture" – 5:20
Index 2: "Part 1" – 5:08
Index 3: "Part 2" – 2:18
Index 4: "Part 3" – 3:47

Later they reissued this cd with some of the indices being normal chapters.

I have a D25 that I got new back in 1990 -- it's still kicking. What's incredible is the old NiMH BP-2EX NiMH battery died long ago but a company on eBay sells replacements where they have changed out the old NiMH cells with Li-ions that work perfectly. The replacement battery is a little pricey but it's so cool to be able to use the D25 without an AC adapter again.

Not really Discman related - I also have and use my original Sony CDP-302 player from 1985. That thing is 100% mechanical: real transformer components, DA circuitry. It's awesome....
