I just won the following from an E-bay seller:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HITACHI-AVC08U-AUDIO-VIDEO-CENTER/232414269174?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649.

This box can accept 2 composite and 2 component inputs (both video and audio) and convert the video from 480 to 1080. The audio is digitized and output through a toslink jack. The box will also accept 3 HDMI sources. You can then select from 7 inputs to output to the one HDMI jack. See the item description for more details.

In some situations, this "box" maybe helpful. I am going to use the box for my CED players. Their video is not that great; but, the HDMI is version 1.3 so it should not matter.

those pieces of equipment are helpful. I have a composite switcher from Pioneer though having an HDMI out would be nice.

great job!

(Please excuse my typing. My eyboard will not let me type the letter between J and L or a comma.. I believe it is on its last legs and I will need to replace it soon.)

Than you. I have a Radio Shac Video/Audio Control Center that I can connect to 4 inputs. Originally it was made for 2 VCR's an LD and an aux inputs. I plan on ta_ing the Control Center's ouput and feed it into the Hitachi Video Center and then feed the HDMI ouput to my AVR. In this way I can hoo up to 4 CED players and still get sound and vision to my AVR.

I will report later on how well converting CED composite video to HDMI goes. Maybe the PQ will be bad.

(I just read what I typed above and I feel li_e a moron lol. )

I have one of those. I think it’s one of those. It was meant to “expand” some dumb TV they made with no ports in the name of thin-ness.

IMO, it sucks, but to be fair I was so disappointed with it that I only ran it for 20 minutes.

This is the same mediocre unit some forum member had multiples of years back, right? If not, I’m totally wrong and I apologize. :)

I should clarify, it does it’s job no problem, but not any better than a TV with this built into it already. It’s a great tool to have around, it just doesn’t look very good compared to almost every other thing I have. Also, I have lots of CRTs so I’m not someone to menu dive forever trying to shine a turd when I can just have it look great by default on a period display. :)

I am tal_ing about this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Video-Audio-Control-Center-Archer-Model-15-1263-/253184021244?hash=item3af2f192fc:g:ejQAAOSwqWNZAJaS

All it is is a simple switch for video and stereo audio. It can wor_ with a video processor which I have. I don't _now if I will use it though.

I own a passive version I believe made by JVC, it does work and I've never had any issues.
Very nice if you only have one connection in your TV or Projector etc.

I’m confused. You originally linked to a box that’s basically an entire TV minus the actual display, the Hitachi AVC08U.

I am going to use the Archer Video Audio Control center to switch the outputs from 4 CED's and feed one of the composite signals into the AVC08U. The converted output of the AVC08U will then go into a DS3300ES AVR so the HDMI can be switched to at any time. That is how the Archer got into this mess. Sorry if you got confused.

You _now I could swear I bought one of these (Hitachi Audio/Video Center) some time ago from a forum user on CEDmagic.com. At the time I did not have an HDTV to test the device. When I get the Center I will search for my device and do a comparison. I will bet that the two are the same. I just cannot remember where I stored my Center I got from the CEDmagic user.

I may not use the Archer Center. I have an auto-switcher made by Sony that may be better. The Sony one turns on when it detects video coming into one of its 4 ports. It then directs the A/V signals to the switcher's output port. The switcher also turns itself off after 10 minutes of dead signal. I will post its model number when I get it out of its cubby hole. The Sony switcher was discontinued by Sony some years ago so if you want one you will have to settle for a used one from E-bay.

The Sony switcher I referred to is: Sony SB-V55A AV Selector. As of this writing there are 5 on sale on E-bay. This selector is capable of converting S-video to composite FWIW. Normally you would use the selector in auto mode. However you can switch inputs manually using the auto/manual button on top of the unit.

I received the Hitachi AVC08U today. I hooked it up to an LD player and my HDTV and then turned it on. The HDTV displayed "HDMI2 Tuner 1". HDMI2 is the input used by the Hitachi. Tuner 1 is the tuner used by the Hitachi. The only problem is that you need the remote to control the Hitachi as there are no controls on the front of the unit. I will have to find the unit I got 6 years ago as it had a remote with it. It looks like the Hitachi works as it gives black and white static on the HDTV but little else.

More info on the Hitachi when I find the remote for it.

More testing of the Hitachi AVC08U:

I setup a Sony MDP-600 to use as a composite/stereo audio source. I attached its 3 cables into their respective jacks on the AVC08U. The HDMI output of the AVC08U was then sent into my Bravia HDTV. I played "The Little Mermaid" and the PQ and SQ were good to excellent. The video filled the entire screen and the audio came out of the Bravia's 2 speakers. All in all the upconversion from 480 to 1080 is not badly done by the AVC08U. Now for the fly in the ointment: You will need an Hitachi's TV remote control in order to control the AVC08U. I happen to have a learning remote that is programmed for the AVC. Without it, you will be in rough territory. If you can find out what Hitachi TV is used with the AVC then you could control the AVC with its remote control.

The manual for the AVC is available on the internet. You will need the 44 page pdf and not the 1 page pdf.

That’s right, the one I got came with a cheap universal remote. I think we bought bought the same thing from the same guy at the same time. :)

I bought my AVC from rixrex on the CEDmagic.com forum. The remote is marked "CHUNGHOP Universal Remote". It is as cheap as you could get. I bought the AVC in order to upconvert CED video to display on an HDTV,

I guess a Harmony remote might work after all it does seem to have a large database of codes. I do have trouble sometimes when controlling certain devices but I guess its better to have some functions working than nothing at all. Its hard to figure out which Harmony one needs since they aren't all the same which is a shame that not every model is capable of accessing all the features of a certain device.

The AVC08U uses the same remote as the Hitachi UT monitors. Those remotes are scarce as I did a search on E-bay and found zilch. You need such a remote as there are a lot of functions that are only available on it (per the AVC08U operating manual). If I cannot find a remote, the 2 AVC08U's are really useless to me. For now, I will continue to search for a remote. If I cannot find one within a a reasonable time, I guess I will sell the 2 AVC97U's that I have on E-bay.

Originally, I bought the AVC08U to convert the 480 lines video from my CED players to 1080 for an HDTV. That was before I bought a new (to me) Sony DA3300ES AVR. The DA3300ES can upconvert a 480 video to 1080 internally thus making the AVC08U useless to me.

Anyone want to buy an AVC08U?
