Post subject: Death Wish III - Which one is the best?

I was watching DW-III on dvd last night.
Dvd PAL version is approx 87 minutes.

US ntsc LD is 100 minutes.
Japan ntsc LD is 91 minutes listed as uncut.

It's kinda confusing about running time of this movie.
I know NTSC to PAL conversion is approx 4 minutes difference.
This means japanese LD running time of 91 minutes is equivalent to PAL dvd which is 87 minutes.

However the US Death Wish III laserdisc is 100 minutes and not being listed as uncut like the japanese LD.
I know that MPAA did list this movie as X-rated back in the day but studio appealed for an R-rating.
Movie was probably trimmed down to be softer and less violent getting R-rating?

I know that the dvd I watched seemed to be trimmed down in action scenes, movie was very lame in certain scenes.

Is the US laserdisc perhaps much more violent than the japanese LD?
did anyone compare versions?

The UK release was only cut by 13 seconds and those cuts have been reinstated. The only cut version on DVD according to dvdcompare is a German release (probably by accident, since it's rated FSK18 anyway, and there is another one that is uncut), which clocks at 83 minutes.

Apparently no cuts were made to lower the MPAA rating. The uncut US DVD is also 91 minutes, so it seems more likely the Japanese LD has the correct runtime.

seems like the US laserdisc has the wrong running time listed!?
it says 100 minutes when it should be 91 minutes??

according to this link below, german movie site US LD has the wrong running time listed.

Hi van-dammage,

I'm glad you brought this to my attention. I checked my copy of the U.S. release last night, and it is indeed only 91 minutes in length, not 100 as the jacket states. I just did an update to correct this, which should appear on the listing page as soon as it is validated by Julien. I can't tell you anything about the Japanese release, as I don't own a copy of it. However, I don't have any reason to suspect that it isn't 91 minutes, the same as the U.S. one. Thanks for bringing this mistake to light, so we can get it fixed!

Best Regards,
David

Hi David.

I know that when Death Wish series 1-5 were released on vhs/dvd in the US some of the sequels were heavily edited by MPAA for rape scenes.
If I remember correct DW part II was chopped a lot in the US, the greek version was the best longest cut available.
US cuts seemed not to be so good compared to international cuts which many times had a longer run time.

I suspect that my dvd of D-W part III is trimmed down coz it's so lame in most action scenes.
I still like this shit-ty movie coz Cannon pics were involved in the production.
I love Cannon films!

I would say Death Wish II and IIII were the most violent sequels of them all.
Part III was banned by censorship in Sweden when it came out, we could never rent this movie at video stores.
Had to get uncut bootlegs from abroad to watch certain banned or censored movies which were never released in Sweden when censorship bureau gave us movie fans a hard time banning movies.
This was back in the days when VHS was the only rental format in Sweden

Cheerio

This kind of reminds me of that remark somebody made years ago, about how the Finnish VHS release of The Evil Dead made the cut UK version look like a bloodbath...

Denmark, Netherlands and Greece were popular sources for getting uncensored PAL tapes :D

Eli Roth is the director, movie will probably be very bloody.
Bruce Willis is the lead charachter.
