Dear Members
How do I get the best picture quality from a CLD D925 to my Sony 52 "TV?
Back in the days I used rgb scart to my old TV and the picture was perfect. On my 52" Sony I don't have the same experience.
Thank you.

No matter the outputs available on your player laserdisc video is composite so you'll never get better than that. You're best off taking the composite signal and feeding it into your AV or TV as they will do a better job than using a S-Video output on your player. I imagine if you use SCART from the player you'd get a composite signal too but these days less TVs and AVs actually support SCART. Hope this helps.

SCART is just a European standard to offer multiple signal on a single (and annoying to plug in the back of a screen with limited reach!) connector. Not sure how the screen chooses between Composite and S-Video, but as a LD Player doesn't output RGB it was one of the 2 previously cited.

Back in the days when the Comb Filters were pretty poor, S-Video might have been a good idea -- using the LD Player filters.

But in today's world with inexpensive electronics components and digital processing, Composite (the single yellow copper cable) should be the way to go. This is anyway as close to the internal LD format as you can get.

In the end, try them all and decide for yourself which looks the best on your screen.

Make sure to turn all filtering on the screen to off at first (Digital noise reduction/DNR, etc.).

Thank you for your comment!
It's so cool with this forum!
I have tested, s-video and composite yesterday. S-video is the worst. The composite was a bit better but still not as sharp as I remember it.
But!!!. I'm sure my European version D925 has RGB via Scart 1 output. As I remember with my old TV, there was a significant difference between RGB (in scart) and composite. It was clear to see the difference in sharpness, especially the unit's "menu" with the white text on a blue background.
At that time it was chopped out of granite.
I am trying to find a fully connected scart cable tonight and test several of my discs.

thanks again

Laszlo, this is only a friendly advice.

There is something you need to know about cables and quality?
You get what you pay for!
If you buy sämsta sortens lakrits kabel which you always get for free when you buy electronics at your local shop, picture and sound will turn into crap using low grade no name cables.

You'd better buy high end audio/video cables which are shielded and use best components for best results.
There's many of them on eBay or at your local hifi shop.
You have good stuff from QED, Ixos, AudioQuest etc. etc.
If you are into clear details by using good cables, you will notice a cleaner and less noisy picture with better colors on your screen.

same goes for audio cables, you get better audio

I'm trying to find a good scart cable and try to see the difference.
That's why I wanted to hear what video output to use ..

forgot to mention, the longer cables you use you need a good HQ cable.
try to find a 21 pin full scart with metal housing, buying plastic scarts does not last very long if you remove scart from unit.
metal housing scarts are the bomb!

I would like to first confirm that there is an RGB output on the player.
Or if it something I'm imagining.

If there’s a quality SCART cable I’ve never seen it other than ones I made myself.

There is no RGB on %99.9 of LD players and you wouldn’t want to use it anyway. Composite is best on anything except vintage displays when it comes to LD. LDs are not native RGB so you’d have to convert composite to RGB inside the player using 90s technology, it would look like total crap.

If the player has Y/C then it probably puts it out over SCART. Selecting between composite and Y/C would be handled by the TV itself but I’d still bet composite looks better.

This is from the review of the 925 over on laserdiscarchive:

"The picture reproduction is, by and large, immaculate. While the player is built upon the guts of the existing CLD-515, it employs entirely new video electronics. One curious aspect is the rather tortuous route the video processing goes through to get to both the composite and the S-Video outputs (all discs come in composite video flavour). The composite signal retrieved from disc enters the digital domain, goes through the frame-store stage, gets filtered into RGB, and is then converted into separate luma and chroma for the S-Video output. The composite video output is simply the separated chroma and luma of the S-Video output combined."

So perhaps more so than other players worth trying both?

I also recall BDE offering an RGB out upgrade for this player so maybe it tapped into the internal RGB to give a standard RGB out?

You are amazing. Thank you for your reply.

No RGB. You were so right.
I have confused the pioneer with my first CDV-988 from Philips back in 1980´s.

So the conclusion is that Composite is the best output from this player?

I have tested 3 different scart cables but not composite yet. I want to test the S-video output when I have found a cable that is not 10 meters because that's all I can find.

Yes, indeed a helpful thread as I was going to ask this question myself.

I need to test the composite signal but I didn't see much of a difference between SCART and s-video. The SCART is more convenient as it's just the one (if unwieldy!) cable for both video and audio connectivity.

I'll report back if there's any difference.

Hey I have a european version of the CLD-D925 with 2 SCART sockets.
The best picture is from SCART 1 to TV SCART with RGB. On the back of TV the label is SCART (RGB)
So I assume that there is RGB trough SCART 1 on the player. The image is quite better than any other video option.

Based on a quick look at the service manual the scart connectors output composite video only from the player. (They will pass-through other signals though.)
