Anyone have ever come across sealed betamax tapes? I found Sting: Bring on the Night (will probably get the LD sometime) still sealed.
I am debating whether to open it or not but I do want to watch it.

I did come across an open Gone With The Wind set last year in Dec but I didn't pick it up. I should have gotten it but that probably is the first time I ran across betas in stores.

I'm not even exaggerating if I said it's been well over 15 years since the last time I saw betamax in the wild.

Apart from last year when I found a deck at the recycling center. Which was also the first time I'd ever seen one, period.

interestingly I bought 2 beta VCRS from this one goodwill they were months apart and priced differently. both of them are made in 1985. 1 model is HiFI and the other needs another unit to be Hi-Fi.

Mine's a Sony SL-C30E, and it's not even stereo, much less hi-fi.

But hey, it was free!

my local "BI-MART" carried several copies SONY's last U.S. market version of their L-750 blank up until about 2003,
when they were closed-out down to like $2.00ea. and i bought one to collect. this was my dark-age years,
before i had regular net access. i look them up on the BAY today, and they're like the most common BETA blank out there by far...

recorded on via the only functional BETA VCR i've ever owned; the 1984 SONY SL-2300, one of the most common BETA decks out there;

I'm just using an adapter.

I have entertained the notion of hooking a digital set top box to it to actually record something on those blanks. Unfortunately, there's nothing worth recording on TV these days :D

try a non-MACROVISIONed DVD such as many/most U.S. Anime releases; they can be an outstanding master source for producing reference quality Videotape recordings;

( "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" FORMAT; S-VHS MEDIA; MAXELL SQ ST-120 DECK; JVC HR-S8000U)

I did use to see those blue and gold Sony blanks at Tower Records back in the day (like early 00s.) Was surprised to see them at that point as I hadn't seen a Betamax tape in any shape or form for many years up to that point (I think before that it was a Betamax tape of The Wizard of Oz that my stepsister's Godfather bought for her thinking it was VHS back in 94 or so.)

After diving into Betamax a few years ago I picked up these black and gold HG Sony blanks

Image

These Sony Pro-X blanks (recommended for recording in B-1 Super Hi-Band Mode--available on only 2 consumer Betamax models)

Image

Some of these ES-HG Sony blanks

And this oddity, HG Chromium Oxide blanks from PDMagnetics/DuPont (thought they only used that kind of tape for audio), and they're L-830 tapes (100 min at B-1, 200 min at B-II and 5 hours at B-III)

I still plan to some time in the future to make a youtube video comparing S-VHS to Beta B-I Super Hi-Band Mode. As well as B-I mode vs VHS SP HQ, so I need to hold onto these blanks for test materials.

IIRC BASF also made chrome Beta tapes (L-750), I'm sure our old Beta deck and a few tapes are stashed away somewhere at mum's place, I'll have to see if I can find one!

Metal tape formulations (also primarily associated with audio - perhaps especially recognisable for compact cassette users of the day) were used for W-VHS and Hi-8.

I do remember seeing the BASF Chromium DiOxide tapes on Ebay as well (both VHS and Beta.) I still wonder how much better quality you'll get using those over standard Ferric Oxide for video recording. I know using chrome tape for audio was a pretty big leap in quality if you had the proper equipment.

I mean it's not like any VCRs (Beta or VHS) had a switch for the tape bias like a cassette deck!

Metal Particle tape was also used for ED-Beta and BetaCam SP. I've read that you shouldn't use that type of tape in a regular or SuperBetamax machine as the tape will destroy the heads.

Standard BetaCam tapes can be used in regular Betamax machine though as they're just higher quality Ferric Oxide tape (like S-VHS tape.)
