Noob question here, can Laserdisc players play CEDs? Are they an entirely different format or another rebranding of Laserdisc?

Lets try wikipedia:

Quote:
LaserDiscs are read optically with a laser beam, whereas CED discs are read physically with a stylus (similar to a conventional gramophone record). The two systems are mutually incompatible.

Massively different, in no way compatible.

CED has groves like a LP record and uses a needls to ride in the grove. No laser anywhere in these units.

Didn't someone on here report confusing CEDs for LD's and, when he bought a CED, he removed it from its cassette(!) and tried to play it in his LD player?

It could have been a FB group though I know I read it somewhere..

Nope. I’ve never once heard of that.

Yes, actually I think you are correct.
If I remember I think I made them post a picture as they were having trouble playing the disc :wtf:

Someone on this forum took a CED disc from its caddy and cleaned off all the protective silicon grease because they thought it was dirty and needed washing.

I know CED isn't all that great a format, but that's going too far! No format deserves that!

The silicone "grease" is actually a sillicone oil that is sprayed on the disc during its manufacture. Its purpose is to act as a lubricant for the stylus. Without the oil, the diamond on the stylus would wear out in a hurry and the disc could suffer irreparable damage. Even fingerprints are a no-no on a CED.

You have to remember that the grooves on a CED are very small. 40 grooves on a CED can fit in a single groove of a 33 1/3 LP record.

I have not yet collected any CEDs nor do I have a CED player, although perhaps in the future, but one thing I have learned about them despite not owning any is that taking them out of their caddy for any reason seems like a really bad idea, isn't taking them out fairly difficult anyway? I don't understand why people take the time to do these things.

I would think that a player that would play both LDs and CEDs would be a strange beast and sort of a b*****d child.

Well, they do make those Laser turntables. Theoretically a laser could be utilized to read the grooves on a CED, right?

Maybe someone with way too much time on their hands and access to all the spare needed could make a crazy-assed player that can play both LD and CED
