I recently found a Youtube channel called Oldtaku, which is all anime from the 90s. Found some obscure OVAs I remember buying at Suncoast. The channel is a fun trip back.

samaron wrote: No, it is about what happens prior to the original series/movie trilogy. It is a prequel. sounds good.

As to what I watched recently... Watched a Cream Lemon episode called "Dark" the other day. A bit graphic sex scenes I suppose,
Makes me want a Cream Lemon box more and more..

going through my AnimEigo Bubblegum Crisis LD set again for the first time in several years.
while the soundtrack and visual style are SUPERB in my book, the storytelling has an unfortunate affinity towards descending into Comic Book tropes all too often.
also, you can REALLY tell precisely when Masaki Kajishima took over at AIC; BGC eps. 5, "MOONLIGHT RAMBLER" and, especially, eps. 6, "RED EYE'S" have "Tenchi Muyo!" written all over them...

scotts wrote: I recently watched the 4 episode OVA of Vampire Princess Muyo. Really nice show. Love the concept and execution. The dark tone was well set by the animation and music. I just wish it was a little longer.
In the process of watching the Tenchi Muyo OVA series. Currently around episode 9. Fun show. Great early 90s vibe. The music is wonderful. Cute animation. A fun, lighthearted show. Even when Tenchi came out I instantly compared it to classics such as Maison Ikkoku and Lum and wept at how annoying it was. I hated Tenchi in the '90s and still do.

lons_vex wrote: There is also a Vampire Princess Miyu TV series. It is 25 episodes long, and was released in two nice "Integral" boxsets on LD. Ooh. I didn't know that. I'll have to look for it! forper wrote: Even when Tenchi came out I instantly compared it to classics such as Maison Ikkoku and Lum and wept at how annoying it was. have a couple VHS vols. of EL HAZARD T.V. (THE WANDERERS) i picked up 20 years ago at a SUNCOAST VIDEO closeout, and the first LD vol. of the OVA in that great Anime LD CRAIGSLIST lot i came across about a decade back. got round to watching them all again.
anyway, what's with this series? made with left over budget and staff from TENCHI, or what?
"Ifurita" was adorable in the T.V. series, however, so there was that, but otherwise, a fairly awkward stab at high fantasy by TENCHI-addled 1990's AIC...

signofzeta wrote: There is a change in tone for those episodes but that’s because old OVAs always changed in tone between episodes. Direction and mecha design move to Obari heavy in these eps and that’s mainly it. That and the focus on Priss. Honestly I consider the Tenchi Muyo association to be borderline offensive. I enjoyed TM back in the day but %99 of it is hyper unoriginal harem crap that will litterally never end whereas BGC is a very short classic that died way before it could be watered down into the transparent gruel that TM became.
If Bubblegum Crisis is like Iron Maiden then Tenchi Muyo is like Coldplay. Ha, this post is great. Classic Zeta and I agree too, TM starts running really thin. Recent watches/watching: Hana Yori Dango, Zeta Gundam, Ranma and City Hunter. Looking forward to: Lupin the 3rd Part IV BD that I have pre-ordered.
