Yeah people have different levels of standards. As long as you are enjoying stuff, that's what matters.

I just can't play Genesis via composite even on a CRT let alone a newer HD set. I've particularly not found a tv where the native processing is good enough to make old games look good. However, I also haven't spent more than $800 for any modern display I have (and that was my main monitor which is displayport only). Thankfully for me the Genesis supports RGB natively.

He’s playing it stretched. His opinion of video quality is worthless. I’m not trying to insult anyone or anything, that’s just a fact. If having geometry that’s totally screwed is OK he’s not going to notice lag or ghosting or anything subtle like that. Even if everything was flawless it would still be a bullish signal that would drive a lot of people nuts. I couldn’t play it. I’d rather it was a blurry composite mess with 10% missing from overscan than play it stretched.

So re: the selling off my games talk I don't plan to by any means, just mentioning that I'd probably dump some game libraries and systems before other stuff. Mainly because their relative "worth" is often more than it's worth to me. Whereas things like my audio set-up would be some of the last stuff to go, in a theoretical situation.

@Zeta: You know I almost commented on that, but I just figured they didn't care at all. I very much subscribe to watching/playing things in their intended aspect ratio. The worst thing are those damn dvds that are 16:9 for 4:3 displays. My external processors have got a lot of use 1:1 stretching those out. And I mean, it's still better than having a 4:3 dvd of said movie. I still do prioritize replacing them with BDs though.

My God. life is a series of trade-offs and compromises.

the first HDM i ever had, a 42" SAMSUNG, made my SD sources look like complete a**.
the noise reduction made everything look terrible, and, even with it defeated, there was horrendous input lag.

i got a return on it, and in 2011 found the 46" BEST BUY "INSIGNIA" (SANYO OEM) i have today.
it has fabulous SD video processing/upscaling on board, crisp, clear, and with zero input lag.

indeed, on some material, i think i might detect some stretching, and, indeed, CRT-based VFX tricks in many video games are quite broken,
but i feel it's a more than worthwhile trade off for the crystal clarity and utter lack of CRT scan-lines.

also, -especially considering my personal health issues- it is nice to own a high performance, large-size video display
light enough in weight for me to pick up and move all on my own. last CRT i ever had was a 32" TOSHIBA that took two men and a boy to hoist around...

INSIGNIA/SANYO 46" LCD MONITOR (SD sources straight from source to monitor, via passive A/V switchers)

Yeah. They are all stretched. Or zoomed. Or something. If the source is 4:3 and it goes all the way to edges on a 16:9 display then...you’re my aunt watching the news, basically. It’s screwed. Not in a technomumbojumpo sort of way but in basic as can be geometry. It’s either cropped or stretched. There’s no other way to do it. You cannot put a square peg into a round hole without distorting something. That’s why letterboxing existed when TVs were 4:3. Now that TVs are wide the letterbox should be on the sides for 4:3 content.

If the moon is an OVAL on TV you’re TV is screwed. The moon is perfectly round. Always. Except on screwed TVs or for people with astigmatism.

I’m sorry your TV totally sucks and lacks a mode no TV should lack. Frankly I’d rather watch Moldiver on a 9” b/w TV than stretched on the best display in the world. Everyone is short and fat on your TV. None of the fonts look right. Objects that travel diagonally move faster on one axis than the other. It’s totally screwed. I don’t know any other way to say it. It’s got nothing to do with scanlines or lag or artifacting or anything. That’s all “can’t see the forest for the trees” BS. The stuff looks melted, man!

Yeah, my TV and projector both can adjust the settings, I know some TVs at wallyworld couldn't adjust but you just have to test them out, if you can't find
then I guess you need the scaler to adjust.

Odd how people will watch stuff out of shape but then complain that its not letterboxed as they lose image

I'm sure I posted this before, back in the day I was with my father at J&R looking at LDs, there was a guy there who wouldn't buy the Widescreen or Letterboxed films, said that he was paying for half the screen and he wanted to get the "whole" image so he would buy the P/S releases

Yeah, I really don't see the need to horizontally stretch any 4x3 programming/video on my plasma.

Saturn video doesn't look THAT bad on it, but after years of playing hi-res games then going back to 32 bit, the jagged edges are just a little jarring to me now. Not so much that I won't play them anymore though!!

There is just generally no helping people that would rather distort their picture than have black bars. I finally fully convinced my mom many years ago. Even my grandma (rip) who was unwilling to switch off VHS watched them in 4:3 mode. Most TVs should have aspect ratio controls.

One of the Vampire (Darkstalkers in the US) fighting games by Capcom. I think it's Vampire Savior/Darkstalkers 3.

Oh that explains why he always had a PR-7820 in his window.

Never knew he was fixing stuff for museums, thought he was just a regular electronics repair guy.

I bet he owns that building which is worth a few mil, its nice to keep a niche business going like that for so long after it hasn't been profitable for the past 10 or so years.

Look at all those other TV-VCR repair places, not too many around, not a lot of money to be made since DVDs and TVs were so cheap
to buy rather than repair.

It sure is a shame that the CRTs are heavier than the newer TVs. I sometimes wish I still had my Sanyo 32 inch or have gotten that widescreen Sony CRT that I was thinking about at the time of getting the Sanyo.

It was a nice article and enlightening too
