I had written something a few hours ago and just realized it was probably not quite correct... Can you clarify that this player has a tray that comes out partially and then you have to grab it to pull it out the rest of the way? If so, that is probably normal for this player as it appears to be one of the models that Pioneer made w/ a semi-automatic loading design. In addition, when you load a disc, you will have to push the tray in until about 1/4 or less of the tray is showing and then the load mechanism pulls it in the rest of the way. So the next question; have you tried to play a disc in it yet?

Sorry for the wait, I have an update. So here is what the player does when you turn it on, it partially ejects the tray and then I can pull it out the rest of the way: I put a disc in and it plays the disc just fine (which surprised me, given the disk is 4 years newer and this is such a basic player) but now that there's a disc in there, I can't get it out without disassembling the unit. I don't even hear anything happen when I press the Reject button. EDIT: Now I can't get it to play the disc either, the Park light comes on, then goes out, and no amount of hitting the play button will start the disc playing.

I'd say try the most logical approach for now; all dip switches up or all of them down and see what happens. Definitely can't hurt @ this point.

I flipped all the DIP switches to down and got this strange screen of nonsense: But what was strange is that I flipped all the switches back to up, tried the player again, and it was suddenly fine! It played the movie, it ejected the movie, it automatically popped the tray out and pulled the tray in like it's supposed to, and it just seems to be fixed with no actual work on my part!

That is your service screen, one of the dips will get you in to service.
