roger wrote: Sadly after those dire recent movies and that awful in my opinion Star Trek Discovery, I've walked away from the franchise and I doubt if if Jean Luc Picard could make is so for me to watch the franchise again. I should point it's probably my age (nearly 60) and maybe young fans are happy with all this. They really botched the new series. I loved the original and also back in the day TNG but since I'm older I can't get back into TNG now. But its much better than the newer stuff.

Deep Space Nine is actually my favorite ST, but the original and TNG are both fun in their own ways. signofzeta wrote: I’m more concerned about it being super violent and “grown up” and whatnot and those things being more important than actual SciFi elements. Ugh.

I feel this is almost guaranteed which bums me out because I really like Piccard a lot. He’s one of my favorite characters. If his new show sucks it will be a bummer. signofzeta wrote: There’s nothing wrong with my hope in the world. It’s my hope in ST that is depleted. I’ll be glad to admit I’m wrong though so we’ll just have to wait and see what it’s like. Picard is my favourite too, so I really don't want to see this be screwed up or flop. I tend to think that Stewart is the type of person who would want to protect his TNG/Picard legacy. It's not like his career tanked after next gen and he's desperate for the money or a revival. Several reports I read named him as one of the executive producers and I'd guess having a say in the show was probably one of his conditions to reprise the role. I'm not expecting any kind of next gen follow on or reboot (and they been quite clear it won't be that). I am very curious to see how the show develops and I'm optimistic about it, though you can never please everyone and yes only time will tell.

I’m a huge fan of Piccard, TNG, and the actor himself.
However, unless I imagined it, I’m pretty sure that when those Tarantino rumors were going around Stewart said that would be something he’d come back for so as much respect as I have for PS I think he is just one actor. He didn’t make any of the stuff he did a great job reading, same with his days in Shakespeare. Tarantino is a anti-human idiot. I genuinely can’t think of a less Star Trek person on Earth and while it would be a HUGE HIT I didn’t get into Trek for the devaluation of human life. It’s supoosed to be a forward looking optimistic exercise in space socialist theory and whatnot. I can’t for the life of me imagine one thing in Tarantino’s bag of (three) tricks that furthers the cause of Star Trek. He’s a sadistic caveman. If we need a new ST with people being anally raped or having their ears sawed off or tons of people getting shot in the head, we know who to go to. I’m more of an Asimov sort of person.
So yeah, I’m a Star Trek fan but I’m not a Star Trek Fan. The difference being I don’t consider Star Trek fandom to be a thing that requires you to keep the franchise going forever when when it sucks, to just be obedient and buy everything they make as many times as they reissue it. That’s another intrinsically non-Star Trek behavior that is very popular.
So we’ll see.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't help but wonder why the world seems to have forgotten how to make positive sci-fi. I realize sci-fi is representative of the time it was made but seriously the whole point of Star trek and things like it was to inspire people to build a better future. Am I just out of touch and all people want these days is depressing crap that goes nowhere or do they think that only nostalgia can make it profitable again.

Yes, but back then people at least tried to be hopeful. Now all we have is endless cynicism.
