I was wondering why there aren't any early (pre-90s) releases of this movie on LaserDisc? The earliest is from 1991 [11206]. I know there are a couple of VHS releases from the 80s -- one of them from 1984 with the old school Warner Home Video clamshell package. I just found it odd that there weren't any listed, not even from Japan. Do they exist but maybe haven't been listed? Thanks.

Probably not, those are the only two I've ever seen, unless someone else chimes in with a hidden release I highly doubt it.

Warner really didn't do a lot of 'less-popular' back catalog titles until the 90s. "The Great Race," "What's Up, Doc?", "The World According to Garp" and "Willy Wonka" fit into this category. Warner did more back catalog stuff in Japan, like "Sharky's Machine" and "The Great Race" in 80s.

Somewhat off topic, but I notice the database has this LD release marked "TV Size". IMDb claims the movie was shot in 1.85:1. Am I wrong in thinking that "TV Size" means the OAR of the contents was 1.33:1 (or close enough)? If so, what does it mean? If not, should someone submit an update to mark this as P&S?

I just looked it up and it says open matte, so...

It's kind of a bummer, I wanted to buy an early LD of The Shining but the earliest one is from Japan with burnt-in subs :(

I do like the cover designs for those Warner JP releases tho, with the zig-zag fade similar to the early US home video box art.

Yeah, I was hoping Willy Wonka was one of those, but I guess it wasn't.

I have a few early 80s US Warner LD releases (Blazing Saddles, 1983; Zelig, 1984). It's a shame they didn't release more, because I'm a sucker for the colorful layout they used.

Yeah, that's the same one I was talking about.

I might pick up that JP Shining release anyway if I find it dirt cheap.

I actually found that one on ebay about a year ago for a pretty good price. It's not in the best shape, but the insert is included. This release also has the mysterious blue end credits (same as early VHS) as opposed to the white end credits on subsequent home video releases (poor video transfer?). I posted it on my YT channel: Shining LaserDisc

Really hard to understand what your questions are.

1st it may be wrong on WW but it is open matte as I have had both LDs and own the older open matte release.

As for the Shinning the USA LD is I believe open matte as I have had that one at one time and remember it being correct or something like that.

As for changing stuff on lddb it should only be done if you actually own the LD so you don't start guessing on stuff, too much to assume.

For Willy, it could have been selected wrong as TV size rather than open matte.
I know I used to accidentally select the smaller details wrong or just use a flat rate 2.35 when submitting early on.

Yeah, I’d never correct a subtle error on LDDB regarding aspect ratio unless I had mutiple versions of the movie to compare and I knew for sure what the theatrical version was.

That's my approach as well. P&S by default unless proven otherwise (Open Matte or Academy).

Super35 is of course a slightly different beast.
