Transformers: The Movie (1986) [PILA-1495]
Transformers: The Movie (1986) [HCL-7001]

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Trans ... 82/#Review
https://bluray.highdefdigest.com/34721/ ... movie.html

The "Highdefdigest" review is very informative; ...various VHS releases, one Pan&scan LD , another "Open matte" LD, several full frame and widescreen DVDs and two 1:85 Bluray discs (one 1080p mpg-2 and another 1080p mpg-4 from a 4k master).

min. 1:29 ....-and we actually found in a corner a pristine 35mm IP copy of the movie and went to scan in 4K....it looked gorgeous !

What a mess, would you still go for the Laserdiscs?

Transformers: The Movie (1986) [HCL-7001]

This release was the only version I ever owned on LD and it was great, but I just couldn't justify keeping it when I sold it and bought the DVD for 10 bucks.
It was open matte.

After reading many reviews, buying multiple copies, DVD and Bluray the 20th anniversary DVD release is the best version.

It has both the open matte and widescreen versions, it had the same specks from the master used on the Hillcrane LD before it was painstakingly restored.

Colors are strange but they were also strange on the Hillcrane LD too.

So overall if you really love the film buy the LD if you can get a copy, otherwise pickup the 20th anniversary 2 disc DVD with the lenticular cover.

I had the 30th? Bluray and it showed the print with a scene having Jazz in it, the LD and the 20th both had the speck, the 30th had that black speck removed.
So all used the same print but the newest had someone go in and remove the "dirt"

150 is not bad, I sold my copy for 250 about 3 years ago.
But again the LD is the best but for what I paid 10 bucks I couldn't justify keeping the LD over a slight variation in color that was actually correct and a little boosted on the LD.

150 dollars for the movie is a bit bonkers considering there's so many more accessible editions going around. At least in this case I can understand it because Transformers collectors.

I wonder how much the Headmasters box set is worth. In one hand I would imagine it'd be more expensive because it has like what, a dozen discs? But in the other, hardly anybody actually likes the show.

Does anyone have both the Hillcrane and Pioneer versions on LD? I only have the later. When got it I was very unimpressed with the video quality and PISSED that it’s mono for some reason but now that I have an almost nosiness LD setup I find the image looks just fine to me. It is dark, but then this movie is dark.

This movie is a Fathom event later this month. I have a ticket.

Never had the second release but did hear about the mono issue.
The PQ was nice on the first disc, looked great from LD straight through a projector with an 80" screen.

As for the price, the LD hobby is not for everybody.

Saw this at the movies on my 8th birthday. Was the best birthday I ever had.

I guess I had recently turned 13, between sixth and seventh grade. Back then it was NOT cool to play with toys at that age but I still did and my brother still broke them all even though he was too old to be doing that too. It was around the time that I started to lose interest in them. This wasn’t because I grew out of toys (that still hasn’t happened) but because that’s when the toys all kinda went to hell and they changed from the meticulous hand made in Japan die cast genius of the 70s and early 80s into something with a bigger margin to fight the rising yen. Everything turned simple and plastic, they stopped using (what should have been) licensed cars, and outsourced any production they could. The same thing happened to LD players a few years later so we all know about this. Never mind the high end, just compare a 90s karaoke deck to even one of the basic home models of the 80s.

I still buy the old ones when I find a good deal, both TFs and LDs.

I think the later ones, despite dropping die cast, are a bit more robust than the early diaclone ones. I'm surprised any of them actually survived playtime.

Actually must have been my 9th birthday, January 1987, movies took a long time to come over to Australia then.

Yeah it blew me away, I was never really a fan of the TV show, it was stupid imo. Transformers just lining up and blasting away at each other at point blank with no effect, the inexsplicable way that Megatron fitted into Starscream's hand in gun mode?? in the movie dudes died, the rich animation, the epic story: the planet eating Unicron (just good sci fi) and Weird Al damn Yankovich! (was already a fan at the time thanks to my neighbor who had all his tapes). It was probably the first time something I liked randomly connected to something else cool (I love it when that happens) Well aside from Mark Hamil on Muppets and Great Space Coaster that I saw when I was living in the US.

Toys wise I was a GI Joe and Star Wars kid, I always wanted Joes and Star Wars over Transformers. But I had Starscream and of course Jetfire (coz he was really a Valkyrie)(ok, ok at that point I thought he was a "veritech" )

There's also a copy of the movie in the VSL-1 Takara release of the 2010 (Season 3) LD box, but not the Pioneer box. Not sure how the video compares to the other releases but IIRC it's in mono with the English track on the L channel and the JP track on the R (or maybe it was the other way around, I forget).

That sounds like the same master Pioneer used for the black LD.

I preferred the color timing on the laserdisc and first issue Japan DVD for the movie. Why the laserdisc commands so high a price i have no idea. I know the Pioneer Laserdisc is allegedly an IP source and red shifted. I also like how it looks. It hasn't been subjected to color correction or noise reduction. I never had the hill crane so i can't comment on it. I also no longer have the region 2 DVD or Laserdisc, i only have the US Blu-Ray.

Yeah it was a bummer the English dub was mono.

It’s not an English dub. The movie is originally English. The JP track is the dub and on the Pioneer LD both are mono! What a strange disc…

As I posted above, I owned the LD and the DVD, still have the DVD.
The DVD is 90% there for the cost, if you want to shell out 200-400 bucks for the first issue LD then go for it, otherwise get the lenticular cover DVD
2 disc set with the open matte and widescreen versions of the film.
