Yep, my friends all loved that movie at the time. I was like, was that the worst SEAL team ever seen on camera? What a waste of a SEAL team. What a stupid movie.

Check out the Blade Runner: Director's Cut (1992) [NJL-12682]
Does not have the dialogue overdub that Scott did not have in mind in his original vision.
The "company" made him include the overdub to explain the story vs. the abstract work of science fiction art as it was intended to be from the beginning.

Also (my fav) Blade Runner (1982) [NJEL-20008] This Japanese release of a U.S. Theatrical version has a few different twists. NOT - including more gore during the murder of Dr. EldenTyrell and the nail going through Roy Batty's hand.
This version has a cool insert emphasizing the Spinner design concept artwork at various stages of pre production. Very, very cool cover layout, front and back ......
Check this version out as well if able .....

Hope this helps mate,

Cheers,
J

I had thought the THX release of Die Hard looked pretty good, also the first Austin Powers film.

Even with the advent of 4k now, these discs look amazing from the laserdisc format.

Pulp Fiction Criterion
Cliffhanger Special Edition
The PAL CAV Jurassic Park
Hound of the Baskervilles (Hammer)
Sleepy Hallow
The Matrix

I'm been surprised how many discs look superb even now.

Also look at the colour of a lot of discs. They seem to be more accurate on laserdisc. Look At The Matrix on laserdisc and then look at it on DVD or blu-ray, it's more teal than green.

And for some reason blu-ray seems to compound the problem. Maybe the people doing the encoding are teal fanatics!

I sort of got under the impression that because it's called "blu-ray" everything has to be more "blu".

I recently watched The Gumball Rally (1976) [11278]. Fairly late pressing at July of 1998. Picture and sound were fabulous. Super clear and clean image. Fun movie too. Same premise as Cannonball Run.

The later pressings are really where the format shines and looks amazing, espeicalliy for older movies shot on film. Bluray looks to clean and sterile. It doesn't look right.

I think it's because most of these restorations are trying to make the material look like modern red digital cameras instead of the film it's supposed to look like

I think many recent restorations that have made it to Blu Ray look spectacular. Sure there's plenty of nightmare stories like the DNR heavy Predator but they are by far the exception. I've been blown away by how film like recent Arrow Films and Eureka releases have looked in particular, lots of natural grain and colours.

I love laserdisc and I totally agree that later ones in particular offer some stunning details and colour, but I've never seen anything on LD that would make me believe I'm watching a 35 mm film, for that experience I go to (a well made) Blu or 4K disc.

Thanks for injecting a dose of realism into this silly "LD beats everything" line. I seriously love LD too but LD beats everything = NTSC beats everything. (Yes and some PAL too!)

A well restored film on Blu Ray or 4K looks the closest I've ever seen to 35mm (or even 70mm) on home video. Even the highest quality laserdisc I've seen still has that mastered on tape look (and every laserdisc was mastered on tape). Sure mastered on tape is an analogue look, but it's not the kind of analogue look I look for.

If you absolutely want a "true" analog look, you'd have to find a movie on blu-ray, 4K or some other HD format that utilizes an older, photochemical-based clean-up transfer as opposed to a digital one - but pretty much no release uses one. The only exception I can think of is the Giorgio Moroder version of Metropolis, which to my knowledge has not been cleaned at all beyond the original restoration done on the footage back in the 80's. The audio required no work because it was one of the first films made with digital audio.

But I think I'd rather just have a proper, manual digital restoration done by a team who cares about what they're doing, if it means actually seeing the movie in HD, than trying to one something like above. Not all digital restorations are sloppy DVNR hackjobs like Predator or Dragonball Z.

This is the problem....

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Conan-the-Barbarian-Blu-ray/23286/#Review

....for what it is an admirable work of digital restoration maintaining how this movie exactly looked in 1982,this young reviewer only
see a disaster !
...yes man, there is a strong organic black/white contrast on some celluloid scenes, there is off focus dullness in others, soft sharpness with low lights on set and grain we love grain and textures, welcome to true cinema filming.......,organic analog colors are greatly preserved also on this Bluray.

We are lost in this Led tv era
