Laserdisc UK website has a moving image of the LDW1 doing the side change, over and over
An interesting design meant to use only one laser assembly, but unfortunately the design creates very slow side changes. The disc has to move back out of the way into the front area, then the assembly and clamp arrangement has to flip over, then the disc move back in. Time consuming.
Several years ago, I made my own version of this by stacking two LX-1000s together, both attached to a signal sensing DVDO unit, with the DVDO also carrying the audio. Then the DVDO was connected to the TV set and amp via one set of cables. To get it to work properly, I'd load the two discs, usually a title with side 3, sometimes 3 and 4, then turn off player two, and start player one.
The disc would play through sides 1 and 2 with all functions available. When it was done, I simply hit the power button on the remote. Player one shut off and player two turned on at the same time, and the DVDO switched over to player two in a flash automatically, so the title would continue. Of course, this only works well if you have two players that are basically the same with the same quality output, and a unit that will automatically switch the A/V signal to a single output.

Some of the industrial models have control setups to allow ganging them together. For example, if you have serial control on a couple of LD-V8000s, you can assign each one a unique ID, & send strings of commands to each one telling it what to do. And they can be slaved to a master sync source, so if you also have a serial-control switcher, you can cut from one to another without a single frame's delay.

Several of the Karaoke players have a feature called "Relay Play" where the player will trigger the next one to start. Some even have A/V inputs so you only need to output one signal to the monitor. I've not actually seen one in action. On the original topic, I know the LD-W1 was issued in the US and Japan, but I've heard there is an Industrial model that is white. I have never seen a picture, or even know what the model number is.

daro2096 wrote: Was there a UK/Europe version released? No, unfortunately. I found this info at this website. "Only one consumer player, the LD-W1 (it was also released industrially too), was made that could hold more than a single disc; the W1 held two discs and could automatically change discs and sides by rotating the entire mechanism, including both the laser and turntable. Electrically, the LD-W1 was identical to the Elite LD-S1. The LD-W1 remained in the Pioneer catalog for many years and received many improvements: While the first version of the W1 had only 2X oversampling and 16-bit D/A converters in the digital audio, the later units had 4X oversampling with 20-bit D/A converters. The video noise reduction was improved, too, sharpening the picture and reducing disc noise while eliminating the artifacts it caused. In addition, high-frequency response in the FM video demodulator and A/D-D/A converters was extended and flattened, increasing resolution and reducing visible digital artifacts. The W1's player software was refined too, making disc and side-changing faster, plus, during side or disc changes, it grabbed a still-frame closer to the actual end-of-program instead of just any frame from the side's last five minutes." I guess those "v2" players are hard to come by these days.

MSB was planning a dual disc player that I detailed here: MSB LS-2 Platinum Dual Transport? It is assumed that they were upgrading a Pioneer LD-W1 for this, but no one can be sure. The article blurb there from Widescreen Review does say that it is a CD/LD transport which the LD-W1 isn't (plays only LDs), so this might not be the case.

I'm pretty sure this was going to be a case with two complete LX-900 transports in it, modified to power up and down the non-active player so they didn't have to do a special remote. The side change times on the LD-W1 were @ 30 seconds, where with this approach the side switch would be presumably be about 5 seconds.

signofzeta wrote: Yeah, side changes are substantially worse on the W1 than any other player by a mile. It depends on what side you are on and where you are headed but I think Side 2 to Side 3 is the slowest.
Mine recently broke (!) and I haven’t had time to look inside. Yes, the 2-3 side break is the longest. When I'm playing a 3-sided title, I put the second disc with side 4 up and then tell it to play ABD. This leaves the player mechanism upside down cutting down on the time to flip it back over for side 3.
