Post subject: Upscaling Laserdisc 1080i or 1080p?? Posted: 14 Jan 2015, 19:21 |

Hi,
I use my Onkyo TX-NR515 to upscale my LD. I find that it looks ever so slightly better at 1080i than 1080p, but Im unsure as to why this is. Can anyone explain please?
Thanks in advance.

There are many thumbs of rules. Most recommends least amount of conversion is likely to give best picture. But it all comes down to what looks best to you. Ok, this makes sense. I tried displaying it at a lower resolution (480p and 720p), but it certainly wasnt as good as the 1080i and 1080p interpretations. Im not averse to watching the Panny LX900 straight into the TV, but it definitely looks better through my AVR thanks to its Qdeo chip, It makes the picture heaps cleaner and the colours seem more stable.

When I can get my a** in gear, I am going to replace my Sony DA2ES AVR with a Sony DA3300ES AVR. The 3300 has the Faroudja trademark on the front of it. The Faroudja is software that can upscale 480i (or p) composite video to 1080i (or p) HDMI video. I have no experience with Faroudja so I hope that it will do the LD video justice.
Project 1: I have to remove my 27" Wega SDTV first and that will be difficult as I just don't have the strength now. I am going to try to slide the Wega out onto a TV stand with casters so I can move the set out of the living room. Once that is complete, I will have to make 2 shelves to put in the place that the Wega was. The top shelf will be for the center channel speaker. The bottom shelf will be where the Sony Bravia HDTV will sit. Below the bottom shelf I will place my Sony UBP-X800 player on the left and on the right will be my Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player. After the latter is complete, I will then replace the DA2ES AVR.
Project 2: My next project is to assemble a set of heavy duty shelves capable of holding 330 lbs. per shelf. There will be 5 shelves so the total weight can be up to 1650 lbs. I plan on putting some 150-200 CED's on it so the shelves will have to be STRONG. (I may assemble the shelves before moving the Wega.)
Project 3: Another project that I have to complete before snow flies is to install 2 snow melting mats on my deck. The 5 foot mats can melt snow at the rate of 2"/hour. Up to now, every winter I have had to fight snow on my deck. I had difficulty shoveling it. The wood deck (for some reason) converts snow to ice making shoveling it hard to do. I will have to buy at least 2 more mats to complete a path to the deck gate. It would be so cool to just turn on a switch and have a path on the deck appear after an hour or 2.
Ad nauseum.

rein-o wrote: Get that wire metal shelving, that holds I believe 400-500lbs per shelf. They have it at any home store and also cosco very cheap. Only issue is that you need to put something like cardboard or plastic on the bottom so nothing falls through. They are also nice that they do have wheels and you can wheel them around.
I use them but only have a maximum of 2 shelves. not 3 or 4. Too late. I already have the shelves. I do plan on putting oak plywood on top of the provided particle board to increase the shelf strength. Right now, I am trying to figure out what to put on top of the CED's to keep the dust off them. Towels and sheet plastic have been considered. Something will come to mind.

rein-o wrote: LOL Good deal. Its really hard unless you build a closed cabinet type with doors on the front, but even then a little dust will get in. Best to just keep the duster handy. It is too bad that they don't make very large VCR covers that could fit over all the CED's on a shelf. I do agree that periodical dusting of the CED's maybe the only solution. I just want to get these darn CED's out of the living room. They do take up a lot of floor space.

I find images looking "processed" when I let the iscan HD+ go beyond 720p THe 4K Panasonic screen does it's magic when I leave all processing set to off. 720p for me
