Transformers: The Movie (1986) [HCL-7001]This release was the only version I ever owned on LD and it was great, but I just couldn't justify keeping it when I sold it and bought the DVD for 10 bucks. It was open matte. After reading many reviews, buying multiple copies, DVD and Bluray the 20th anniversary DVD release is the best version. It has both the open matte and widescreen versions, it had the same specks from the master used on the Hillcrane LD before it was painstakingly restored. Colors are strange but they were also strange on the Hillcrane LD too. So overall if you really love the film buy the LD if you can get a copy, otherwise pickup the 20th anniversary 2 disc DVD with the lenticular cover. I had the 30th? Bluray and it showed the print with a scene having Jazz in it, the LD and the 20th both had the speck, the 30th had that black speck removed. So all used the same print but the newest had someone go in and remove the "dirt"

I wonder how much the Headmasters box set is worth. In one hand I would imagine it'd be more expensive because it has like what, a dozen discs? But in the other, hardly anybody actually likes the show. Headmasters i would buy it on VHS, the LD box is from hard to find to impossible to find

Back then it was NOT cool to play with toys at that age but I still did and my brother still broke them all even though he was too old to be doing that too. It was around the time that I started to lose interest in them. This wasn’t because I grew out of toys (that still hasn’t happened) but because that’s when the toys all kinda went to hell and they changed from the meticulous hand made in Japan die cast genius of the 70s and early 80s into something with a bigger margin to fight the rising yen. Everything turned simple and plastic, they stopped using (what should have been) licensed cars, and outsourced any production they could. The same thing happened to LD players a few years later so we all know about this. Never mind the high end, just compare a 90s karaoke deck to even one of the basic home models of the 80s. I still buy the old ones when I find a good deal, both TFs and LDs.

Actually must have been my 9th birthday, January 1987, movies took a long time to come over to Australia then. Yeah it blew me away, I was never really a fan of the TV show, it was stupid imo. Transformers just lining up and blasting away at each other at point blank with no effect, the inexsplicable way that Megatron fitted into Starscream's hand in gun mode?? in the movie dudes died, the rich animation, the epic story: the planet eating Unicron (just good sci fi) and Weird Al damn Yankovich! (was already a fan at the time thanks to my neighbor who had all his tapes). It was probably the first time something I liked randomly connected to something else cool (I love it when that happens) Well aside from Mark Hamil on Muppets and Great Space Coaster that I saw when I was living in the US. Toys wise I was a GI Joe and Star Wars kid, I always wanted Joes and Star Wars over Transformers. But I had Starscream and of course Jetfire (coz he was really a Valkyrie)(ok, ok at that point I thought he was a "veritech" )
