Hi again,

I have finally got round to removing the labels on the GREAT RAILWAYS disc that I had made a start on - an early dated 1981 on the cover, 1982 on the disc PDO pressed issue.

The previously mentioned small sticker below the disc label was made of very thin foil & there was another on the other side but it had nothing at all printed on it.

Other than the number 3 on one side & the number 4 on the other (they were the side play numbers) written with an ink marker there are no other marks or numbers at all, no stamped or engraved "mint marks".

Also there are none of the usual PDO dashes on the inner or outer sides of the disc but the solid outer ring is there though, still to remove the labels on the other disc that make up this title but I am assuming that it will just be the same as the one just done.

Don't know why I did not notice the lack of dashes before now but it was when I was removing the (large) label I noted the lack of dashes then.

So a PDO pressed LD with no dashes, this is getting rather confusing now.

I do remember talk many years ago of the very high fail rate of the early PDO LDs & apparently there were a few changes to the way things were done at PDO Blackburn soon after production started so were the dashes added for whatever reason after the first runs of LDs from them perhaps?

I do believe that this & a few other BBC discs were among the first commercial LDs released, any others out there without the dashes?

I passed on the other very early PDO LDs that I had years ago so don't have anything now to compare this one to.

I will try to post some pictures soon.

Cheers

Today while I was talking a walk during my lunch break as I usually do almost every day I discovered a new and small record shop close to where I work.
All of a sudden while looking through the boxes with various vinyl discs inside them I noticed a laserdisc within the lot - The Frighteners dts LD !
I guess the seller did not even know it was a laserdisc and sold it to me for 5 Euro. I could not believe my luck. I most certainly did not expect this
to happen today ! Plus I have never seen this film so I have something new to watch on my laserdisc player.

I have found a few, not many but a few, LDs like that over the years in unexpected places including among boxes of vinyl records including an F1 LD that I had not seen before - made my day!

Great when you bag a good one like that, enjoy  .

Cheers

I wish that "Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother" was released on LaserDisc.
Ironically this title was released on CED ! ! !

Now if any of the membership are not familiar with this Gene Wilder, Marty, Feldman, and Madeline Kahn epic then attend : YOU MUST SEE IT ! Disclaimer : there is high risk of breaking one or more ribs while viewing......

Released circa 1975, this member first saw this movie on HBO around 1977.
Needless to say it left an impression !

If you liked Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, and High Anxiety then you may find The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother quite appealing.....

Check it out .....

Cheers to the membership

Sheer Luck!!!

It also has a really good transfer & also the Guns N' Roses bit that is not on the DVD versions.

Enjoy

I have got two LD players & I have my fingers & everything else crossed that they don't have any major issues, every time I power them up I breath a sigh of relief when they spin up & all is okay.

Had a few more players in the past but passed them on years ago, wish I had held onto a couple of them now though.

I also don't have the funds to bag any more unless they are at a fair price & I can pick them up - cannot take the risk that is incurred with carriers or our post office.

I know this may be a bit of an anathema for you forper but would you not consider an LD player that is not a SONY?

Where you are is it not a little easier to pick up fairly reasonably PIONEER or PANASONIC units & others from Japan?

You are closer to Japan than I am here in the UK so is shipping not perhaps a little cheaper?

Here in the UK most player that come up for sale are usually PIONEER units with some SONY units popping up sometimes, very rarely does anything else turn up apart from the ones that are highly priced & have been up for sale for years.

Hope we can all keep the big silver discs spinning for years to come.

Cheers

Just watched Two Lane Blacktop on Blu-ray (btw the transfer on the disc is really good) & included on page 34 within the enclosed booklet is the following.....

NOTES ON VIEWING
Two Lane Blacktop was shot in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. When viewing on widescreen systems, the display mode should be doublechecked so that the film appears with its original dimensions intact, with black bars bordering the top and bottom of the image.
INCORRECT:
a couple of images with the screen totally filled - image blown.
The above images are a distortion and corruption of the original artwork, which travesty the integrity of both the human form and cinematographic space.
CORRECT:
an image showing the intended (correct) image.
The image as intended by the director when shown correctly on a widescreen display.

SPECIAL NOTE: Any "motion smoothing" settings (such as "Puremotion"/"MotionFlow", etc) should be swithed OFF so the film can be viewed as intended. Please calibrate your display settings in order to experience this film optimally (many factory default settings are neither suitable nor desirable).

I don't buy or have that many blu-ray discs so not sure if a similar type of notice is often on other discs, are there others that carry the same type of message & in as much detail?

Cheers

Is this the Criterion or the Masters of Cinema?
Very interesting to see this, so many fools who don't know how to setup for the film, they may know how to setup for color etc
but all these new enhancements for TVs really mess things up for older non 60fps stuff.

Can't remember if I ever saw this one but may have to check it out now.

The copy I have which includes the "NOTES ON VIEWING" text is the Masters of Cinema release.

I have seen the Criterion issue but felt it was a little overpriced & as the Masters of Cinema release is easy to pick up new & sealed here in the UK for around the £10 mark (including postage) that is the one I went for.

zeta..... love the feature also & have a copy of the ROAN laserdisc which came included in a collection I bought quite a few years ago so was lucky to pick it up for a £ or two at most, a good transfer on the LD & it has the same commentary from Monte Hellman & Gary Kurtz as is included on the Masters of Cinema blu-ray release.

rein-o..... it really is worth checking out if you have never seen it.

My first post!

Does anyone out there happen to have pictures of the insert which came with The Gene Kelly Collection? I just got a used copy on ebay for $7, but of course, it doesn't have the insert. I found one image, but it's too small and zooming in is a nightmare.

Hopefully, someone out there can help.

Thanks

Hi gemstone101,

I don't have that title but hope someone here will reply positively.

Good luck

Hi rick_dangerous,

I use the poly lined sleeves to replace the onion skin/elephant condoms sleeves, they can also help prevent the LD bursting through or stressing the cover.

If you ask sellers the exact dimensions of the sleeves they are selling that may give you the info you require & help you find your ideal size, they can vary in size as you have mentioned.

Most lined sleeves that came new with LDs back in the day had the "hole in the middle" & that was with the US issued LDs & PDO pressed discs here in the UK, don't think I have seen any for sale without the holes but someone here may be able to point you in the right direction.

I bought a few that were ideal for LDs - perfect size with none of the sleeve sticking out of the cover & not too snug either, that included the slightly smaller Japanese LD covers which were what I was replacing most, can't remember who the seller was now though.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

Cheers.

Don't know if this helps but I was given around 100 of the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab MoFi Original Master Record Inner Sleeves which I used on my F1 LDs with the ones that were left used on a few of my favourite discs.

Not sure of the cost but they are really good for laserdiscs as they fit perfectly in the slightly snugger Japanese covers.

Again not sure of the cost but the ones I was given came on bags containing 50 per bag.

The chap who gave them to me was big into vinyl & swore by them, he did have the funds to spare though.

Might be worth a look unless you are looking to replace a ton of discs but if not required in huge numbers they really are very good, they may not be that costly though.

Cheers

It's too heavy, I'm scared to move it from room to room.

I have not seen one of these beauties in the flesh but knew someone who had one years ago & I think he said it came in at around the 36 or 38 kilo mark - would that be about right?

There are not many things that I lust after but the HLD-X0 is one of the few things that I would be more than happy to own.

Everyone who has one enjoy  .

The Avengers (1998)

Hadn't previously seen this one. What you have here is such a grab bag of randomness that it ends up being completely incoherent. I mean the style is cool, it's visually engaging, and all that. And it should have been a lot more fun seeing Sean Connery playing what could have been a fun send up of James Bond villains, but overall this thing is a mess.

Warners made some pretty bad mistakes with this one. After a test screening which was not done in an appropriate location it was mercilessly hacked to bits.

Below is from the IMDb site & may help explain why it turned out as it finally did.

The original cut of the film ran around 115m., according to advance reviews. Many of the scenes cut include:
The original opening sequence featured the "Evil Emma" infiltrating a secret base, the Prospero Project. She drives up to the base in a blue Jaguar on a secluded London highway, and enters through a red phone booth by uttering the words "how now brown cow? After gaining access to the base, she proceeds to kill several of the scientists and security personnel, and destroys the base by blowing it up.
The scene of Sir August De Wynter playing organ was originally shown after the opening. As the base blows up, he exclaims "let our revels begin!"
When Emma Peel enters the Gentlemen's club, the attendant who insists that she not enter because she is a woman continues to prevent her from entering, and which point she Karate chops him, which sends him flying down a flight of stairs.
A scene of Sir August De Wynter, dressed in the teddy-bear suit, rhythmically slicing the face of a scientist to classical music while trying to figure out the clues to the Prospero Project.
The first meeting between Emma Peel and John Steed was originally longer. You can see her walking through the corridors before she finally makes her way into the sauna. The dialogue is longer, more frank, and it isn't dubbed, as it is in the theatrical release.
A more coherent explanation of why Emma's Jag exploded after the mechanical bee attack.
Emma Peel drops from De Wynter's arms as she is escorted to his room. He doesn't let go of her, and brings her back up swiftly.
When Sir August De Wynter has Emma Peel in his bed, he lowers the zipper on her shirt just a little more.
More scenes of Peel and Steed walking through the corridors of Wonderland Weather.
Emma Peel bounces back and forth between the walls of her padded cell.
Sir August De Wynter drives to the World Council meeting in a Rolls Royce snowplow after it begins snowing heavily as a result of his weather machine.
More shots of Mother witnessing the worldwide destruction that the weather machine is causing.
More scenes of Peel and Steed walking through De Wynter's headquarters after they lower in through the telephone booth.
An extra shot of Big Ben exploding, shown from slightly farther away.
During the climactic battle between John Steed and Sir August De Wynter, De Wynter slices Steed with his sword several times. De Wynter raises his arms as the battle nears it's end. Steed becomes enraged toward the end of the battle. Note how Steed's shirt is inexplicably cut and bloodied after the fight begins.
After the Prospero Project self-detonates, a countdown clock begins to tick, nearing toward the explosion. When the explosions begins, the silver dome in the headquarters ( the one Steed and Peel pass when they enter) is shown exploding.

Dune (1984) [43153]

I walked in mostly cold with regard to this one. Had heard about it but had never previously seen it or read Herbert.

All I can say is: WTF did I just watch....? I think I'll just leave it at that.

If it is any consolation the Dune LD you watched is by far the best release on the LD format.

All I can say is: WTF did I just watch....?

I take it you will not be spinning that one again then.

Cheers

Been raining all day here in lockdown so...

Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Special Edition (1991) (Uncut) [PSE82997-6WS]

I spent the afternoon with while have a few cheeky rum and cokes.
Picture quality i thought was spectacular for LD, really surprised me to be honest.
Movie is still a good in my eyes even today.

Went through all the supplement discs, holy moly a lot of effort not only went in to the film itself but im sure it took awhile to do all the frame-by-frame photos, text etc in the supplements.

Hi jakeheke,

T2 - the transfer on that set really is 1st class & the extras are the cherry on the top with the Guns n Roses bit that is not on the later DVD issues.

A lovely set all round.

Been spinning a few LDs also just now & got a few more on the watch list.

Cheers

No real reason to be honest other than I read somewhere that it is basically a 925 with a DVD player stuck on it.

What other European players would you recommend that meet my specs list? Open to all ideas.

I am no expert here but pretty sure it is not a 925 with a DVD player stuck on it.

One of the few places that will still take on laserdisc player repairs here in Glasgow commented on the 925 that I took in for repair a few years ago which they managed to do & the guy did know about the various UK players. He did state that the 925 was the best of all the UK models & when I mentioned the 919E that I had at the time he really did not rate it, he thought it was a nice looking machine but that was all then running through why he would have the 925 over the LD DVD combo players. He compared the picture quality to be very similar to the 515 & I would agree on that one, quite a soft image.

I do love my 925 & don't think I will find anything better at a price I can afford here in the UK unless I win the lottery but as I don't buy a ticket that is not going to happen.

Your 925 packed in after spinning a warped disc? How bad was the warp as any slightly warped discs that have been spun in my 925 were a little louder when playing but no other issues thankfully. Can the player not be fixed?

Hope you find a good player at the right price for you.

Good luck with the hunt  .

I didn't compare that to the master list of the ones on the site yet, but just taking a glance quiet a few aren't on there, would you like me to go ahead and add them?

I can see a few that already are, but I'd rather add titles we know for sure exist and have seen a copy in existence (even if it's on an auction site).

Already hard to double-confirm these, let's not add more ghosts :-)

Julien

No worries! I'll be buying them when I can, in the meantime I have some GMC Dealership Laserdiscs coming in shortly that I'll be digitizing and adding to the database.

Thanks pokefraker.

I am pretty sure I am not the only person who really appreciates what you are doing here.

Always pleased to see your new postings.

Cheers & two thumbs up to you   .
