hey guys.

it just so happened that i got to see some pretty swell things as a young boy in the late-80's/early-90's,
thanks to the relative dorkiness of my parents.

thought i'd go ahead and share some of it;

me and my mom, at a George Takei autograph signing, 01/28/1990 ;

me and Patrick Stewart, 01/06/1991 ; (excuse my weird face, i do believe i was ill at the time)

William Shatner, 07/22/1991 ; (Alas, i couldn't be there, as mom only just had admission fee for herself at the time)

well, TBH, the MITSUBISHI HS-U80 is a beautifully-crafted drop-dead looker, -if you're into those sorts of late-80's CE cosmetics, that is-
but it's raw video performance actually does lag behind that of the JVC HR-S8000U ,
which, while also being a cosmetically handsome, well-built unit, (though not quite as all-out lovingly-crafted as the HS-U80, at least externally)
also has some of the cleanest, crispest raw video performance to be seen out of a VHS/S-VHS VCR.

in sum, if you can only own one, the HR-S8000U is THE vintage S-VHS VCR to own...

i just cleanly cut any stickers/price tags i wish to retain off the shrink,
and either glue/tape them on the jacket, in a complementary place, or, more commonly, onto the inner disc sleeve...

Well, that's it for Nadia. alas, while hardly Shakespeare, the series maintained high quality
up until the infamous "Island Episodes" began, and simply never recovered.

i suppose the best of the series essentially ended on a high point,
with a genuinely sweet scene between Captain Nemo and little Marie, one of the briefest, yet best in all of Anime, IMO.

i theorize that NHK Broadcasting, being the BBC of Japan as they are, finally woke up and noticed the series,
and, conservative, Right-Minded souls that they clearly were, took umbrage with the tone the series was taking,
insisting dumbing it way down and essentially Committee-ing the remainder of the series quite to death.

oh well, at least the series left me some very memorable music;

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll310/shaorin-chan/Anime%20Collection%201/Nadia%20BRD%20-%20V.%20Collection%201.jpg

Also, Capt. Nemo was a cool guy
(right up until the Island Episodes onward, that is, when he had somehow suddenly degraded into "typical Japanese guy in charge")
Marie was positively Adorable in her precociousness,
Grandis was easily the most likable "Ne'er-Do-Well-Villain-with-a-Heart-of-Gold" in all of Anime,
and the NAUTILUS I was actually quite a singularly awesome Submarine.
in fact, i even kind of want a model of the thing now. well, we will see about that...

at any rate, on to PATLABOR T.V.

PATLABOR T.V. is FANTASTIC, easily among the very best, IMHO.

the characters are written like REAL PEOPLE, lending a singular veracity that is exceptionally uncommon in Anime,
indeed, rather uncommon in any storytelling medium, really...

the near-bottom of this model range, the CLD-1080, was my very first LD player.

paid $50 for it back around 2005, and it lasted me like a month, before it slipped out of my grip,
heading down the terribly steep staircase at my grandma's place.

it smashed face first into the brass hand-railing, and that was all she wrote...

yeah, i just saw OBLIVION again myself a few weeks back, only the second time, actually.

it's really quite good, much better than i remembered, even.

that said, i picked up the new TERMINATOR 5 the other day,
and sat down to all the films sequentially, save for T3, which i saw once way back, and never bothered to pick up.

all told, T1 and T2 are evergreen classics that only seem to get better every time i see them. two of the best films ever made.

my mom actually took me, at the tender age of about nine, to T2 in the theaters in 1991.
it was an experience, capped off with both me and mom breaking down in tears at the end
devolving into a stupid popcorn fight during the credits.

today, the umpteenth viewing later, it remains every bit as powerful as that first time,
even more so, actually, IMO, in it's full-length, non-theatrical form.

indeed, that ending still manages to get my eyes misty, nearly 30 years on.

My God, what a Tight, TIGHT, film, and, very much the FINAL one, IMO,
as it brings such a powerful and complete sense of closure to the franchise.

T4/T5, well, those are, in the main, UNWELCOME ANOMALIES, IMO.

sure, they've their moments, -T5 most especially- but by and large, they all feel flat out wrong,
particularly after the bittersweet finality of T2...

i remember back in the early/mid-90's, when my Grandma, a total Movie-o-Holic, got hold of a first-print Red-shelled copy of RED OCTOBER.

my mom REALLY wanted that thing; she offered trades, she offered to buy, but grandma simply refused to let it go.

of course, she eventually got rid of it somewhere down the line, never even once attempting to offer it to my mom.

well, Granny, 25/30 years on, and my mom is finally Avenged, -no-thanks-to-you- and i have not one but two variations
of one of those all-too-rare (in the U.S. at least) unusual VHS releases,
and it just so happens to be one of the finest films ever made, to boot;

https://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll310/shaorin-chan/JVC%20HR-S8000U/THE%20HUNT%20FOR%20RED%20OCTOBER%20RedCassette%201st%20Ed.%201-11-17.png

while i'm about the topic, i've also another of those oddball rarities,
and it also happens to be a delightfully silly, underappreciated gem of a film, at that;

Maybe anime sucks.

quite honestly, it most often actually does. makes one appreciate the stand-outs and classics all the more.

i mean, i don't "Hate" THE VENUS WARS by any means, as ZETA so often likes to insinuate.
in fact it was actually pretty good by Anime standards.

my beef with it was that it hit like a hammer right out of the gate, great music, great visuals, all the good stuff.
indeed, i figured i had just found myself another MACROSS DYRL or the like.
ultimately, the movie disappointed me, as i suppose i might of been expecting perhaps far too much of it.

i guess i should get around to watching it once more; perhaps i just might find myself a much brighter opinion of the film,
especially after sitting through the Macy's Parade of Anime stink-bombs i've recently endured. We shall See...

i dunno... i have VHS ex-rentals that have seen who-knows-how-many passes that still play fine to this day,
20 years beyond the format's general market obsolescence. if that ain't "Durability" then i'm not at all sure what actually is.

heaven knows, i've had far, FAR fewer issues with rental Videocassettes than that of the Russian Roulette nightmare of rental DVDs...

i do indeed take ginger care of my optical media, but that hardly means most people out there do anything like the same.

i get a lot of DVDs second hand, and i also rent often from the regional public library network.

between the two of those sources alone, i cannot begin to tell you the mass quantity of fluky discs i've had to endure.

meanwhile, damn near every VHS cassette i've ever bothered with has played all the way through, usually without a single hitch.

DVD is the final, and ultimate SD home video medium... IF you take care of it.
