It's nearly impossible to reliably get such information.

The ratio of guess vs. estimate would play against us, and give partial/wrong information.

Not worth it.

Elite Entertainment should know how many Nightmare on Elm Street 2 and Nightmare on Elm Street 3 laserdiscs they produced.

So should Criterion but then never cared about my requests by Email for interviews or back stories or trivia about their LaserDisc period.

They flatly don't care as it doesn't bring them any extra business whatsoever.

It works!

First pictures added on the live/prod website:
Sanyo HVL-BM2000 (BASEBAND)
Sony HDL-5800 (HDVS)

I will need to add self-discovery code to be aware that a new (main) pic has been added to a device Done: it will help populate the main page:

HIFIDO is nice to keep online their previous transaction for LD Players .

They are not selling many, since they tend to sell them for a higher price to cover their shop/storage expenses but it gives a clue on what models are still being purchased locally.

I only looked at 2016~today. The top 10 is:

8 x Pioneer LD-X1
6 x Pioneer DVL-919
6 x Pioneer CLD-R5
5 x Pioneer LD-S1
3 x Pioneer CLD-R7G
3 x Pioneer DVL-H9
2 x Pioneer HLD-X0
2 x Pioneer LD-S9
2 x Pioneer DVL-9
1 x of a few models: Panasonic LX-1000 / Philips PLD600 / Pioneer CLD-R4 / Pioneer HLD-X9 / Pioneer CLD-959 / Pioneer CLD-500 / Pioneer CLD-HF9G / Pioneer CLD-939 / Pioneer CLD-Z1 / Pioneer DVL-909 / Pioneer CLD-02

All MSRPs added to the hardware database, thank you!

Only few issues:

M-V7057 $1,99 => I believe $1,299
CLD-870 $500 => should be CLD-V870?
CLK-V90 $1,900 => should be CLK-V900?

And this one is listed twice:

CLD-3030 $900
CLD-3030 $1,300

So obviously, there is no PCM digital sound nor AC3 capability since they weren't implemented in players until 1984 and 1995 (this is probably a late 1970's player).

CX only indeed, I have it as a 1982 player => Sylvania VP-7200
The Pioneer LD-1100 started in 1981.

Now we can use the hardware database for quick confirmations... and correct/add missing information! :-)

(this is a draft explanation that will eventually become a help section/FAQ, previous topics can be found in https://forum.lddb.com/viewforum.php?f=64)

Took me a few months but I slowly updated the code to add devices for now (parts, remote controls, etc to come later).

Why build such a database?
Same reason than the LDs database: the information is slowly fading away from internet as manufacturers/servers/online services shutdown or retire.
I think it was time to move to the next level and also document all things hardware related to LDs (and beyond) so that everyone here can manage their gears (and maybe learn a few things along the way).

I had plans for a Hardware section right since 2002 and started a draft/prototype in 2009 when laserdiscarchive.co.uk updates stopped but it remained mostly cold until we started a thread on all players, remotes, DACs, etc.

blam1 took an immense amount of his time to compile all known data in a giant Excel spreadsheet that served as a starting point for the new iteration of the database.

https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=7016
https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=5991
https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=266
https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=6564

Right now it comes with these categories: https://www.lddb.com/hardware.php

A/V Component (anything handling audio and video, such as switch boxes, scalers, converters, etc.)
A/V Receiver (Integrated Audio-Video who can do a LOT of things but ultimately feed speakers)
AC3 Decoder (devices purely handing AC3/Surround, otherwise under Sound Processor)
AC3RF Demodulator (devices handling purely AC3RF, otherwise under AC3 Decoderor Sound Processor)
Amplifier (ONLY amplification, no decoding/switching)
Auto-changer (specific to professional LD players with multiple discs capability for Karaoke)
Blu-Ray Player (usually including CD and DVD as well)
Captioning Decoder (Either Closed Caption or TELETEXT)
CD Player (might also play SACD or CDV or VCD but not DVD)
CED Player
D-VHS Player
DTS Decoder (devices purely handing DTS, otherwise under Sound Processor)
DVD Player (might also play CD, SACD or CDV or VCD but not Blu-Ray)
Graphics Decoder (Either CD+G or LD-G)
HD DVD Player (might also play CD and DVD)
Laserdisc Player (including Combi LD/DVD and related techs like HDVS, BASEBAND, WIDEBAND, etc. incompatible with standards LDs)
MUSE Decoder (both decoder and NTSC down-converters)
Pre-Amplifier (switching, decoding but no speakers output)
Sound Processor (AC3/DTS/others like CX or Digital Audio decoders, including DACs for now.)
UHD Blu-Ray Player (last generation of players able to play most discs like CD/SACD/DVD/BD/4K BD)
VHD Player
Video Processor (scalers, line doublers, enhancers, etc. mainly handling video signals)

We might add more categories if needed like (PDUs or pure DACs).

I tried to design templates for each category but in real-life there are SO MANY possible combinations and hybrid devices that it quickly showed its limitation.

So instead I opted for a global unique template for all devices that REQUIRE EXTERNAL POWER to run normally.
This mean (for most cases) stand-alone devices that you plug to the power socket on the wall. This is why remote controls will be considered as "parts" instead.

The first section has the basic common attributes (color, model, brand, dimensions, power requirements, clone/OEM, etc.).

For now I designed 3 main domains: Format Compatibility , Decoding Capability and Physical Connections .

Format Compatibility

Some players can play only one format (ex: CED or VHD) but Combi LD/DVD could play many and "universal players" can play most discs.
Some LG drives could read both BD and HDDVD, etc.

Each time you select one format a section will appear below with some specific information that can be added (DTS-compatible, region lock, etc.).

CED
VHD
LD
CD (audio)
CDV (LD content on CD)
DVD VIDEO (including HD VMD)
VCD (MPEG1)
SACD
DVD AUDIO
HD DVD
Blu-Ray (including 4K/UHD)
D-VHS

Decoding Capability

So far I have found only 3 mains decoding classes:

AUDIO (such as all the Dolby and DTS flavors, LPCM, HDCD, etc.)
MUSE (they had tons of specific connectors)
CAPTION (how far you could customize the captions in size, color, position, parental lock, etc.)

Physical Connections

This is by far the scariest section when you look at it the first time, but it's not that bad after a while when you get the logic behind it.

By trying to fully describe a lot of existing devices, I came across TONS of connectors I had never personally seen or used before.

CONTROLS IN/OUT (such as remote control repeater, triggers, DIN8, DIN5, CD Sync, RS-232, USB, Ethernet)
POWER Outlets (extra power oulets at the back to daisy chaind, either switched (on/off with the device) or unswitched (always on))
Audio IN (MANY types in both analog and digital in various standard such as RCA, BNC, fiber, XLR, Toslink, USB, jacks, MIDI)
Audio OUT (same as Audio IN + speakers connections)
Video IN (again MANY types in both analog and digital in various standards such as Coax, S-Video, BNC, DB15, Japan D, SDI, DVI, HDMI, Display Port)
Video OUT (same as Video IN)

I'm sure I missed some connectors, such as the weird SONY TV input described here: https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=10186

If more connectors, decoding, formats are needed, we will add them as we go.

For now I'd be happy if most people on the forum/website can successfully add most of their devices with accurate information and pictures whenever needed. That should keep me busy for the next 20 years of LDDb! I started coding the first alpha version around April 2002 and I setup/registered the User #1 (admin) on August 8th, 2002.

You can still see my old eBay/Only shop (static page) here . I shut it down when I left Japan. then started cataloging my own collection until I registered lddb.com and published updates on the alpha version from November 2002 and beta version early 2003 .

Working on this first version of the Hardware Database taught a LOT of things I didn't know about commercial audio/video products, including some high-end brands I never really heard about -- being completely out of my budget at that time -- but that you can find a lot cheaper today.

Please help us complete information if you have them at hand, and let's keep this fun for everyone!

Apologies for resurrecting a long dead conversation, but after noticing those links were broken I went on an mini archeological dig and believe I found them. I dunno who else would be looking for such a thing in 2022, but maybe it'll help someone.

These are the SSAs I used to download 20 years ago and lost along the way (dead CDRs probably), thank you for finding them again!!

Going through the Service Manuasl and online pictures, I'd say that:

DENON changed completely the audio section (adding a circuitry to reach 20-bit via lambda converter with upgraded 18-bit Burr-Brown PCM61P).
I can only find CD-G circuitry in the schematics and on the front logos: no LD-G anywhere

Panasonic LX-900
Digital Audio goes Panasonic MN6626 DSP -> Panasonic MN6476M MASH DAC

Denon LA-3500
Digital Audio goes Panasonic MN6626 DSP -> Digital Filter NPC SM4851AS -> Lambda Processor (split L/R) DENON HG62E33R79FS also found on DCD-1550 CD Players -> PCM61P DAC (one per channel).

I was just perusing eBay and ran across this baby....

This is an RCA, LDR500, which appears to be a mixed clone from a CLD-M90 (same front face except fewer buttons) and a CLD-M301 (same back panel but with an additional set of AV output jacks).

Thank you for preserving the pics!

If I wanted to buy an X0 you can bet damn well it would be from the person that can repair any fault with it (even if it was at a markup over the Yahoo Japan price)

I have nothing against a fair markup for extra service.

But I don't see how the timeline works here where the X0 is resold as-is directly, unseen/untouched/untested from Japan.
Where is the added value?

Am I missing something?
Pioneer won't service it anymore the way Nicolas Santini used to pre-service his players.

So how does that work exactly? (back to my original first message and honest question)

(don't like FB???)

No, I don't like FB ( please quote your sources ) and dropped the idea of running the discussions for LDDb on it and started the phpBB3 forum instead.

FB had numerous issues in searching, retention, privacy, etc. The quickly disappearing wall posting system is not working for information you want static and easier to find. (could you really find posts from 10 years ago in a FB group? Disclord posts would have probably all been deleted, etc.) Plus I didn't want to force anyone to have to open an unrelated FB account for something as trivial as LD discussions.

As little as " LDDb on Facebook " is, FB keeps bombarding me with offers (most of the time paying) to "engage", "reach out", "touch" people, "promote my products", "increase my exposure", etc. almost daily. It's really annoying.

https://tech.slashdot.org/story/22/02/07/1458211/mark-zuckerberg-and-team-considering-shutting-down-facebook-and-instagram-in-europe-if-meta-cannot-process-europeans-data-on-us-servers

EU is threatening META with thermonuclear fines if they keep tracking users and sending data back to the USA.
META is threatening to pull FB and IG from Europe... I kind of see it as a solution ;-)

Note that Google isn't better, META and Google share date about you all the time so that something discussed on WhatsApp will show up in ads on YouTube. It happened several times to me before.

Thanks to https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=8699 I built up a side table of LDs that have been re-released by Criterion on other formats.

Which means the remaining unmatched titles are, by definition, exclusive to LaserDisc.

Here is the list, please tell me if I missed a few!

You'd be getting an average DVD Player without DTS output and more moving parts than your CLD-D925.

Stick to the LD/CD player in my opinion.

I'll contact him to get some info on the old CC models.

I reached to him and he got back to me!

Turns out we overlapped a few times in the past 25 years (LD, Closed Caption, Amiga, DVD region-free hacks) even though we never crossed.

I ended up getting the full BNMvideo story (quite a ride!) and added the missing devices here .

https://www.lddb.com/gallery/hardware/1901-2000/1925/main.jpg
https://www.lddb.com/gallery/hardware/1901-2000/1926/main.jpg

They were indeed CC decoders for the French/European market for early adopters who were importing NTSC LD/VHS in the 80s and 90s.
At that time the TV broadcast and home video market in France had a 2 to 3 years delay.
The LDs were usually released in the USA within a year of the theater release.

Basically you could import (not for cheap!) LDs of films sometimes not even released yet in France -- I remember watching Scream 2 US LD a whole week before it was released theatrically in France. CC decoder was helping understanding the dialogs.

He offered to kindly write a little story (in English) of BNMvideo. We'll post it here when it's ready!
