Got an update from Pioneer Service Center on my LD-S9:

1/ Belt was worn and will be replaced (I know that: got a few loading errors recently).
2/ Rubber Mat was worn and will be replaced.
3/ M-Holder is fine.
4/ Laser level on the optical bloc is weak and towards end of life.

It costs basically the price of a used LD-S9 on YAJ but you cannot know the mileage of these players after 20 years.
I already have spare parts for 1/ 2/ and 3/ but it's the last chance I'll ever have to get a brand new 4/ optical block from Pioneer Japan.

=> I agreed to have the optical block replaced with a new one.

Also asked to get all the replaced/old parts back.

I can be reaaaaaaallllly annoying until they give up :-P

This is the most recent Email I sent to Pioneer Japan:

Good evening,

Here are a few more elements to explain why I am very serious about buying the remaining LaserDisc inventory/parts.

Of course, PIONEER JAPAN would be credited and properly thanked for extending this goodwill gesture to the LDs fans around the world still collecting players and discs.

Over the years, I personally acquired:

CLD-D925 => my father was working with Pioneer France/Clarion in the 90's
CLD-R5
LD-S9
RFD-1
HLD-X9
LG-1
HLD-X0

In the past 20 years, I built a central website for all things LaserDiscs to keep the information and people connected.

As of today:

Users = 7,917 persons
Collection = 837,627 Laserdiscs

The FORUM allows for discussions:

Total posts = 104,159
Total topics = 8,014
Total members = 4433

They are overwhelmingly (83%) owning Pioneer LD Players:

https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=76

Pioneer 83% 83% [ 410 ]
Panasonic 8% 8% [ 37 ]
Sony 3% 3% [ 15 ]
McIntosh 2% 2% [ 8 ]

Because the hardware devices are getting old now (some are more than 40 years old), we are trying to keep all the information/knowledge we can about LD Players.

It is becoming harder and harder to find official Pioneer (Japan) spare parts, documentation, information.
For safety, some years ago,I purchased a set of Pioneer Reference Disc (2001) [GGV1069] , M-Holders (VNL1700, VNL1603), rubber mats, belts, etc.

Based on these elements, I would really beg you to reconsider NOT discarding all the remaining parts/inventory after 2020/9/30 and allow me to acquire them as a bulk purchase.
They will become quite useful for all the people around the world still maintaining and repairing their LD Players (a lot are Japanese models).

Please forward this business offer to the relevant person inside Pioneer/Onkyo Japan and/or the Service Centers around Japan for consideration.

I hope you will kindly reconsider not throwing away a big piece of LaserDisc history.

Best Regards,
Julien WILK

If you could help me (politely) push as well, the contact page is here:

To be helpful, you could tell your name, where you live, list all the Japanese Pioneer LD Players you own and explain that you are supporting my effort to continue supporting LD Hardware after September 30th, 2020 if they let us acquire the remaining inventory parts.

what show is it? It kinda looks jinto from Crest of the Stars.

Katakana name on covers says:

=> Late 1999 anime boxset for which we have little information: DT Eightron [ZMLZ-101]

Hello!

You could easily use a LP record cover (or make your own) and put any Laserdisc inside but...

Why not simply buy a LaserDisc and make a custom cover?

It is a superb device for AC-3 and DTS. Just ensure you use Reaper to capture the audio. The drivers are on the Zoom website as well as the manual so really buying unboxed you are not missing anything.

Finally got a U44 with an MSH-6 mic (both boxed ) for $170 (MSRP $260) .

I might sell or trade the mic for a XYH-6 to be able to record live music.

I have to confess that I closed a 22 year old gap and finally purchased 2 boxsets I couldn't afford/bring back in my luggage on my first trip to Japan in 1998.

Fushigi no Umi no Nadia: Perfect Collection Memorial Box (1990) [JSLD-1004]
Meitantei Holmes (Famous Detective Holmes): Memorial Box [TKLO-50185]

They were part of a trilogy of boxsets I really, really wanted to have on LDs -- 3rd one being the Ghibli Ga Ippai -- to replace my copied-from-(French)-TV VHS tapes of the complete Nadia and Holmes shows I hold on to until the VCR died.

Took only 22 years :-)

I'd personally never heard of "Ulysseys 31" nor "Cities of Gold" until seeing discussions about them popup in the early 2000s.

They were HUGE hits in France. Ulysses 31 more for boys, Cities of Gold for everyone.

Cities of Gold animation cells sell for US$2,000 a piece in Japan now... :-/

Yep, that's the price of a used HLD-X0.

Picking up the serviced LD-S9 (+ used parts removed) and 12 x remote controls on Monday.

LD-S9 back home with 12x remote controls + the replaced VWT1100 (optical block).

LD-S9.jpg

Servicing date : October 3rd 2020

Since there were only advertising CLD-R5 and CLD-R7G for servicing until the deadline, I'm quite sure this is the last S9 that Pioneer will ever service!

They did a little more than I expected:

VWT1100 (carrier assy w/ cable)
VEB1184 (belt)
DEB1169 (rubber sheet)
VNL1663 (thrust holder)
VEB1114 (cushion rubber sheet)

Tested (of course!) the player right away for issue and it works fine. It's even a little more quiet than before and the fresh rubber sheets spin the discs up faster than before.

Mission accomplished!

And how does a conditioner actually condition? Is it like a massive massive cap and a variable frequency drive so that it can generate a new %100 perfect AC wave form? If not, I don’t really see how you can “condition” the power.

Well, you have have protector, conditioner, regulating and more advanced filtering stuff (only letting the 50/60Hz pass, filtering the rest, etc.).

=> https://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/power-strips-power-conditioners-voltage-regulator-difference/

I'm not trying to improve audio or video in anyway, just insulate the gears from wall power and among themselves.

If you put $30~50 on the table, don't be surprised if you're getting scammed:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrYRW6R3EP0

$100~200 (new) you get a little better:

https://www.talkbass.com/threads/a-review-you-think-furman-power-conditioners-are-worthless.408603/

APC is clearly a better build but starts at $400+:

https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/176173-quick-help-choosing-power-conditioner-furman-elite-15dm-i-or-apc-h15/

Then you go into the very expensive where each back outlet has it's own filtering path.

Here I'm just replacing basic $10 no-fuse, no-nothing basic power strip with... a rackable glorified power strip with fuse and on/off button.
I know I'm not buying a nuclear fission plant :-)

100V PDU solved... just won a $75 Furman PL-PLUSJ Series II on YAJ.
J stands for Japan.. they modified the voltmeter to center on 100V, I think the chassis works on 90~140V anyway.
Series II as far as I can tell just updated the front labels and have an all-black case, instead of bare metal on the previous model.
MSRP was $500, street price $400 (typical -20% Japan reseller discount).

8 outlets on the back, I'll need 6.

PL-PLUSJ II.jpg

Now on to the 120V PDU hunt!

Were any titles released on DVD-Audio or SACD also released on blu-ray audio?

In Japan it's the other way around. Lots of BRA were THEN released on SACD.

https://www.discogs.com/label/1026653-High-Fidelity-Pure-Audio?sort=catno&sort_order=asc&page=2

Look for the PROC-*, PROT-*, PROZ-* references.

Final update to the LD Support page (for Japan) was on November 17th, 2020 (FAQ on November 13th):

(Google translation)

For customers who use laser disc players ~ Notice of discontinuation of production ~ (2009/1/14)

Thank you for your continued patronage of our products.

Since the launch of the laser disc player in October 1981, we have sold a total of approximately 3.6 million units in Japan, and have been favored by many customers. Thank you very much.

As new media such as DVDs and BDs (Blu-ray Discs) have become established in the market these days, it has become difficult to procure dedicated parts necessary for production, and it is unavoidable that after about 3000 units to be manufactured (DVL-919, CLD-R5, DVK-900, DVL-K88) production will end the production of laser disc players.

Notice of end of after-sales service (2020/11/17)

We have set a retention period for repair parts in order to support repairs after the warranty period has expired.
The holding period of repair performance parts (parts necessary to maintain the function of the product) of the laser disc player is 8 years from the end of production of each model.
In addition, even after this holding period has passed, if there are parts, we will repair them, but since the parts inventory has run out, we have terminated the after-sales service.

[FAQ]

Why did you end production? (2009/1/14)

It became difficult to continue the business because it became difficult to procure the main parts necessary for the continuous production of laser disc players in the future.

My current laserdisc player is out of order, can it be repaired? (2020/11/13)

We have held and repaired performance parts for each model for eight years, starting from the end of product production.
In addition, we have been dealing with parts after that, but we have terminated the after-sales service because the parts inventory has run out.

Can you tell me when the production will end for each model? (2009/1/14)

DVL-K88: July 2009
DVK-900: June 2009
DVL-919, CLD-R5: May 2009
HLD-X9: July 2002
DVL-H9, LD-S9: June 2002

All More than 8 years have passed since the end of production of laser disc players.

Is it possible to continue to make inquiries regarding operations and usage other than repairs? (2020/11/13)

We will continue to support you as before.

BD release with 4K remasters.

https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/4117-world-of-wong-kar-wai

What a year after Fellini, Varda and Bruce Lee boxsets!

All movies up to 1997 were available in some forms on LD (usually Asian releases), ex:

As Tears Go By (1988) [PCLG-00051]
Days of Being Wild (Ah Fei ching chuen) (1990) [PCLX-00011]
Chungking Express (1994) [RT1000L]
Fallen Angels (Duo luo tian shi) (1995) [COLM-6182]
Happy Together (1997) [COLM-6225]

One seems to be missing: Ashes of Time (1994) [WV1433]

The Mandalorian Season 2 keeps delivering great entertainment and tons of easter eggs for the fans.

This weekend will be the last episode for this year. A lot can still happen!

Since MANDALORIAN is a success, we're going to have the same team work on OBIWAN and AHSOKA.

Maybe TV series were a better venue to continue the Star Wars saga than the rather failed sequel movie Trilogy.

Took me identical mint marks to see that the Wagner's "Complete Ring cycle from The Metropolitan Opera" with the golden disc cover (I suppose an evocation of the ring as well as the LDs inside)...

https://www.lddb.com/cover/ld/04101-04200/thumb/04193.jpg
Wagner: Der Ring Des Nibelungen: Metropolitan Opera (1990) [072 522-1]

... was also released separately in 4 covers that re-create the full ring:

https://www.lddb.com/cover/ld/04201-04300/thumb/04223.jpg https://www.lddb.com/cover/ld/04201-04300/thumb/04224.jpg

Wagner: Das Rheingold: Metropolitan Opera: Levine (1990) [072 518-1]
Wagner: Die Walküre: Metropolitan Opera: Levine (1990) [072 519-1]
Richard Wagner: Siegfried: Metropolitan Opera: Levine (1990) [072 520-1]
Richard Wagner: Götterdämmerung: Metropolitan Opera: Levine (1990) [072 521-1]

Pretty neat!

Another exotic finding was sighted!

20201211_162639.jpg

The logo shows ULTIMEDIA which sounds weird (or maybe a contraction of ULTIMATE and MEDIA).
But it has more sense in its longer version: IBM ULTIMEDIA

It does have an IMDb entry .
And probably a reference book companion: https://www.google.com/books/edition/_/Q7KdugEACAAJ?hl=en
The company who designed the boxset still have a concept picture of it here .

IBM-Ultimedia-Columbus-Discovery-packaging-Hero-1200x714.jpg

L.A. Times gives hints that it was a PC software piloting a LD player used as picture/video storage I suppose:

The New World on a Disc : Computers: IBM is testing the waters for video-disc teaching by launching a multimedia history of Christopher Columbus.

But it had never been submitted to the database or discussed on this forum so far.

=> Columbus: Encounter, Discovery and Beyond (1992) [04G3748]

More information here:

https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-1991-11-11-1991315112-story.html

IBM PC 386SX (not Intel) dedicated to a Multimedia IBM PC called PS/2 Ultimedia Model 57 SLC .

The version we saw had external speakers and was attached to a Pioneer laser disk player. Its operating system was a pre-release version of OS/2 with special multimedia extensions.

US$6,000 for the PC, US$2,500 for the Columbus contents.
That could buy you a brand new HLD-X0 few years later!
