I own various editions of Terminator 2, one of the few movies I really could watch each week and still enjoy it.
All these versions have their advantages and drawbacks.

http://svcchaos.free.fr/LD/T2/T2_Collection.JPG

From left to right, 1st row
- USA Extended THX Release [LD 82997-2WS] : Great LD, but no CC, so I'll choose the Japanese edition, with LD-G
- Japan 1st SQZ/AC3 Release [PILF-2187] : Again, great LD, good SQZ picture quality, but no CC nor LD-G, so I'll choose the 2nd edition.
- Japan 2nd SQZ/AC3 THX Release [PILF-2555] : Perfect LD. From far the best version on Laserdisc ever.
- USA AC3 THX Release [LD68952-2DD] : Great LD, but inferior to the 2nd SQZ japanese version.

2nd row
- Japan 8" making of [PIMF-1001] : Just for the fun of owning a 8" LD with some stuff about T2 on it !
- Japan Hi-Vision A-Mode Release [PILH-1001] : Good Hi-Vision release, but picture seems to be inferior to the 2nd SQZ japanese version.
- Japan Extended THX Release [PILF-1800] : Great & solid box set. Extended Version with LD-G.

So what I'll try to do here is a comparison between:
Standard [LD68952-2DD] , SQZ [PILF-2555] & Hi-Vision [PILH-1001]

I've always wanted to do it, I'll just need some time, but I think it could be interesting for those out there with interest for the odd LD formats.

I start with the Hi-Vision release, to raise the bar a little high and see if the other version can still compete with it.

A simple but still beautiful packaging, with a double digipak holding the 2 discs.
This version has both A-Mode 3.1 and Dolby Surround EFM Tracks.

The SQZ version is also very classy with it's black top obi perfectly matching the cover.
It offers Dolby Digital, CC & LD-G and a very good picture quality.

I've tried to find some scenes that I will compare between the 3 version.
1st picture = Hi-Vi
2nd picture = SQZ
3rd Picture = Standard

Scene A - Opening

Hi-Vi: Picture quality is good, but not great.

SQZ: Great picture quality, maybe inferior in definition than the Hi-Vision one, but it moves better.

Standard: [...]

Scene B - Arrival

Hi-Vi: Mostly in the dark, here also, we have a good picture but not surprisingly great.

SQZ: Dark scenes are not a problem for the SQZ version, no visible quality loss like with the HiVi. Picture seems to be blue when compared to the grey of the Hi-Vi.

Scene C - Scanning

Hi-Vi: As the background is not looking great and seems to be a little blurry, the foreground with all the terminator Data is always clear and perfectly readable.

SQZ: Lower resolution as the HiVi picture, but still very good. Here we can cleary see that SQZ has a wider AR than Hi-Vi. See Picture 5 for example.

Scene D - John

Hi-Vi: Daylight = Better picture quality. The small computer "PIN Cracker" screen gives a good opportunity for MUSE to show off. Once again: if it's not moving, it's good for MUSE :D

SQZ: Here also, you can see that SQZ is wider than Hi-Vi. Pictures of the small computer shows it well.

i dunno, LD perfomance via a PIONEER CLD-3030 directly feeding a 46" LCD monitor looks perfectly acceptable to my eye, at least,
and is also several thousand USD cheaper;

Besides obvious ones like THX1138 or Star Wars, there's a clip in The Lion King that was altered for DVD and subsequent releases.

The Laserdisc of Aladdin might also have unaltered lyrics for one of the songs but that's just a guess.

Oh right, yeah, I forgot about the LE DVDs. Despite the fact that I own them. Doh!

But anyway, I was just gonna mention the redrawn crocodiles, but looks like they've tinkered with The Lion King a bit more than that. There's a full list here .

And since I'm talking Disney, they also altered Knickknack, one of the old Pixar shorts, for DVD and blu-ray releases of Toy Story, but the original version is on the CAV box set. They re-rendered the girl statues' bοοbs off.

Ransom (1996) on LD includes a extended cut up to 20 minutes longer than what is seen on DVD or Blu-Ray. Most people say it helps flesh out the film too.

Dead Poets Society (1989) (Uncut) [7821 AS] has a 144 minute cut on LD where all other versions are the theatrical cut of 129 minutes. There are also 2 editions of "Outrageous Fortune", one which gives top billing to Shelly Long and the other to Bette Midler . The only differences are the jackets, and opening/closing credits. All DVD editions are the "Bette Midler" version.

Enemy Mine (1985) German PAL laserdisc contains the German theatrical version which runs longer than the US version released worldwide on DVD.

Solar Crisis (1990) Japanese edition is a different, longer version than the international/US release (also has a different, longer ending). (In-)famous for being an "Alan Smithee" film, the Japanese version is actually signed by the real director (Richard C. Sarafian).

Besides obvious ones like THX1138 or Star Wars, there's a clip in The Lion King that was altered for DVD and subsequent releases.

The Laserdisc of Aladdin might also have unaltered lyrics for one of the songs but that's just a guess. In Lion King, there was a star cluster in the sky that was supposed to have an easter egg saying SFX. People saw it and though it red SEX. That was changed for later releases.

Aladdin had some lyrics changed due to depictions of Arabs, but I believe the change took place between the Theatrical Run and the first home video release. Its on the original release of the OST though. The biggest change was when Aladdin whispered into the Tigers ear in one scene where people took as Aladdin saying something about kids taking their clothes off or something. I think that was edited for later releases.

Here's a list about changes made in Disney releases. IIRC, most restorations Disney did after the analogue era (1995 on) changed a lot of things about their films (color temps, Aspect ratios, framing, replacing original animations). The only film affected by this was Snow White. It never had a home video release before the 1994 one and it was the restoration that set the template for later ones. The films from the Disney Renascence era made it mostly unscathed since no major changes were made until their DVD releases.
http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Recommended-Editions-of-Disney-Animated-and-Partially-Animated-Features/id/15617

IIRC, all the content on the CAV Criterion of Ghostbusters ( CC1181L ) has never appeared on any other edition of the film.
