Hello All,

TLDR: I'm looking for the Videodiscovery Math Sleuths laserdisc and teacher's guide.

I've been collecting laserdiscs since 2013 and my father has poked fun at me for doing so occasionally. However a few months ago, out of the blue, he tells me he was on a team for making a math themed educational laserdisc. :o I have been doing weeks worth of research on the product and it seems it was a market flop. It is not even listed in the LDDb.

My father was hired as an "Instructional Specialist" as he was a mathematics professor at the time at a local state university. Essentially he overlooked the curriculum side of the production.

Videodisc overy was a Seattle educational company who distributed their video curriculum on Laserdisc instead of VHS. They were able to utilize the barcode reader to jump around the disc quickly.

I have his acceptance letter, student resource guide, and the promotional pamphlet, but my father and I would love to find the actual laserdisc and watch it. If anyone know how I can get my hands on the disc please let me know.

I was perusing the internet and came across this picture:

I did some searching and it is a snapshot from a 2012 Google April Fools video about getting the entire YouTube library on DVD with trending videos on LD (time stamp 1:50).

So you're the one who outbid me. Well I got to watch one of them anyway, so no real loss.

About a year ago I went looking for a complete list of UMDs. I found one which had, I think, all releases worldwide. For the life of me I can't find the list now. I think there was somewhere between 1,200-2,000 UMD Videos.

This guy has 970 English language releases.

I personally have around 100. I know you can get a composite or component output for the 2000 and 3000 series PSPs as that is what I use to watch mine. My friend has several docks as well as one that you would install in a car with a screen that mounts on the headrest. All aftermarket I believe.

Now correct me if I'm wrong as I've never done this before, but I think you can also wirelessly connect a PSP to a PS3 kind of like screen sharing.

Spending ~$100 for a player set up plus $5+ per movie for a format with less than desirable resolution in this day and age doesn't seem so far fetched for this forum or its members.

For those unfamiliar with LASERFiLm, go ahead and read up on all the information available about it on the Internet. It should take all of about 5 minutes.
This video shows the unit a bit but not much else. There is some information from a previous employee of McDonnell Douglas in the comments of the video.

There is a little blurb about it here:

And here:

If you are wondering why I type it "LASERFiLm" please look at this logo and tell me I'm wrong.

Since the chances of finding a disc to play on this are slim, I have taken it apart for never before seen pictures and trying to trick it to play.
You are going to have to excuse the poor quality of the pictures as I invest my money in useless A/V equipment and not in fancy cameras.

Here is the front panel:

If the transport screw is set then this message is displayed on the screen:

Silly LASERFiLm, I already have screws loose.

Behind that little metal plate is a 15v battery and fuses for the computer processing board:

Laser Assembly:
The White plastic hook on the left tells the unit a disc is inserted. The black plastic in the middle rides under the disc and has an optical reader which picks up the laser through the disc. I think anyways.

The sleigh unit straddles the disc. The big circle is the laser:

The component to the left of the screw is what I mentioned earlier as the optical reader. The best way to get replies on this thread is by saying something wrong so I'll just stick with it being an optical reader regardless of if it is or not.

The spindle hub is about the size of a cd. I tried to play several things in this player to trick it including: CD, VHD, CED, piece of cardboard, and a piece of film negative. The CD was too small as you can see in this video and the VHD/CED center hole was too large for the spindle hub to grip.

Here is a top view of the system seeing if there is a disc:

Here is what is showed on the TV screen during the process above:

And finally this is what the laser does during the process above:

In case you were wondering about the model number (LFS-4400)and power specifications:

So there is the write-up on LASERFiLm you never wanted.

Actually I like that quite a lot, and would say it's more of a Pontiac grille/nose.

You're right, it does look more like Pontiac GTO grille. I saw one of the new Alfa Romeos on the road the other day, so it was fresh on my mind.

Alfas are widely considered some of the most beautiful cars in history so this is a strange reference.

That's true. I guess it goes to show everyone has different tastes. I knew a guy in college who hated the look of wood grain.

Don't mind the streeeeeeetch. I'll figure it out eventually.

Copy/paste from the description
This is a videowall presentation possibly shown at the 93 Taejon (now known as Daejeon).

This was captured from a recordable laserdisc.

Q. WHY IS THERE NO SOUND FOR MOST OF THE VIDEO?
A. #1This was captured from a recordable laserdisc which have been known to contain raw footage for editing purposes. This may have been a pre-voiceover master. Or the voiceover was to be live at the Expo.
A. #2 There was a tone present through one channel which I removed as it was unpleasant. The tone may have acted like a dialup tone to relay information to a computer at the expo or the editing unit.
