Yep, it's all part of the challenge of seeking stuff from a better era.

Good luck with that Marantz

Nice, how's your Japanese? I've decided to finally learn it properly. After years of university lessons, a year on exchange and years working there I still can't watch a show without subtitles. Pathetic. My weakness is vocab (and laziness). I've started studying JLPT vocab daily with an app and my 1-2 year goal is to watch the entirity of my UC Gundam laserdiscs which span the movies to the 0083 OVAs..right now rewatching the subbed SDF Macross on DVD and picking out and noting SF and military vocab as I go. Should help with Gundam and the stuff I'll watch before that (Zambot 3, Heavy Metal L-Gaim). Basically want to own the LDs and watch every Sunrise show in my lifetime, pretty much the same dream I had since I was 15 years old...

They look nice but I'm still more impressed with the CRT image I get with my setup. I've definitely seen more impressive grabs with Lumagen too. Maybe it's the films?

5th element is way too Euro for me to enjoy

I went from Kuro to Oled due to 4K. Oled is a worthy successor but Kuro beats it in certain areas.

- motion on Kuro is worlds ahead of anything oled or lcd. I miss it dearly. I have the Sony Oled which supposedly has the best processing/motion among Oleds but it still hurts my head on pans anything fast.

And a good CRT is worlds ahead of a Kuro plasma. This is exactly what I get with all modern displays, that head hurting, jarring effect on pans. Give me CRT or give me death!

Yeah one of the main things about physical copies is control. You control it, it's completely yours, it can't be deleted from a company's on demand database, in the case of music you can make mixes freely forever, without needing an internet connection or some company's approval.

Another thing that's beautiful about LD is that when you press play it goes straight to the content, no menu, no BS. It makes you feel even more in control. It makes you think "This is yours, you paid for your own copy and you now own it, no strings. Complete control with LD."

No copy protection on LD either makes for good feelings, if I feel like I can back this up any way I want to, because I OWN it, I'm not borrowing it.

My DVD player is modified to branch to the content with a few presses of play but it's still more annoying. Australian market DVDs have this ridiculous thank you thing on the front of all DVDs. "Thank you for paying for this, you just saved the industry" or some s**t. So damn annoying.

yeah same reason I prefer my DYRL? LD to my remastered DVD.

The LD of old shows always looks ideal, it's also actually the way people saw it at the time, you can't change history or make history "better" by using current technology. It's wrong.

I want the same experience of a guy with cash, taste and knowledge circa 1990. That hasn't changed since 1990 when I was a 12 year old kid drooling over this stuff in Japanese magazines and at other people's houses.

2024 - mark your calenders, the year physical media is banned by the UN for its use of plastics. Also the year most of the world ignores the UN as usual.

I think we will go outside and enjoy the world or find a good clean hobby that we can enjoy
like playing golf in random parks as forper does

Try it, the green fees are really reasonable. Look forward to a lot of golden moments, like when a junkie walking his dog offers you advice on your swing. Or a crow flies away with your ball. It's the greatest scenery/arthouse LD ever made, in analogue Super MUSE EYE Vision.

Okay I got advice on AVS Forums and apparantly you can't overpower decent speakers (even ones with lower power ratings) unless you crank the volume to max.

I think I already had known this and then forgot. Happens to me more and more, unknown knowns..

Anyway it's probably a bad cap or a grounding problem so it's back in the shop. Wait and see. Meanwhile I've replaced it with a reasonably priced TA-F3000ES which was the original amp these speakers were paired with. Sounds very good but not as much depth and power as when my 808ES is with them. I can't risk the 808s faults damaging my speakers tho, I love my speakers more than any people in my life.

Was forced to see detective pikachu by my f***ing idiot friend last night. At least he bought the tickets.

The PC-ness is so painful. It's definitely a movie made in 2019.

The heroes are a black kid and a white girl? tick.
The seemingly good white man at the start of the movie actually turns out to be super evil? tick
The seemingly evil white woman agent type is actually just a shape shifting evil pokemon controlled by the evil white man? tick.
Pikachu's dad is a good white man at the end but he looks like a young Guardian writer and he married a black woman so he's safe? tick
Pikachu asks the audience how they can't believe in climate change now during an EARTHQUAKE. tick
Pikachu suggests they go press the female reporter for more info but then quickly makes clear to the audience it's actually a metaphor. He then calls her a dame and is shamed by the kid and told women don't like that. tick.

Jesus Christ, I was really not liking the brainwashing of the kids (and some of the adults) in the audience and being talked down to constantly but stayed to see how many more left wing/social justice/identity politics messages they could cram into a movie about a f***ing yellow piece of s**t.

The effects were pretty good and the giant baby miming pokemon (f**k, is that a real pokemon?) is about the creepiest thing I've seen in a while. I had to look away.

By the way Disney has officially run out of ideas. The previews were for Toy Story 4, The Jungle Book, The Lion King and Aladdin.

Yeah I think Platoon is underrated today, visually spectacular and the costuming and battle sequences are really well done. However the retiring Governor General of Australia, Vietnam combat vet General Cosgrove told me once it looked wrong.. Vietnam didn't look that lush or jungle like. I'd guess Platoon was filmed in the Phillipines?

I'd like an LD release of it but the only widescreen ones seem to be a case of "we would have done it like this if we could have" and recoloured. I hate that. I want to see it as it was originally released, I hate revising history. I want the experience of the person at the time seeing it.

Are you saying the company makes more money than you and I combined or that the people working there do? I can say with confidence that I make more money than at least someone at Criterion, unless it’s down to one guy now or something. Technicians in that field are famously underpaid and usually underpaid by the gig.

We'd call you a Chardonay Socialist in Australia. Someone who's comfortable and so gets all preachy about how when other people want more they're just greedy.

Not everyone has a cushy life and everything paid for, some people have still gotta hustle for it and sounds like Reino is running a small business which can't be easy

There is a guy on ebay from Australia who has LOTS of LDs, mostly Japanese LDs for sale.
Check him out, you may feel like you are overpaying but if you can pickup locally and see condition it may be worth the risk.

Yeah he's in Adelaide, I'm in Canberra. I've considered getting a rental car and doing a road trip. If I could physically go through the discs I'd buy heaps. He's kinda lazy at listing them, I can see there are tons of unlisted titles in the pictures of his storage room. You kind of have to ask what he has, there's a good chance he has it, but then his prices...$10 a piece for his V Gundam discs but for the whole collection he wants (14 discs) 14 x $10, $140, then shipping. Not worth it. I could probably get a set from Japan shipped for half that and I could see pictures.

Where are you Deadlegion?

It's common for the average man on the street to say Star Wars was just revolutionary in terms of effects at the time, and that's why it was so popular.

Of course it wasn't. Kubrick achieved much better space effects a decade earlier.

Star Wars was everything, very likeable characters, excellent costuming, great scripting and pacing. The effects weren't THAT good.

Post subject: Re: Capturing PCM from LD
Posted: 10 Sep 2019, 11:12

Crying with happiness right now. After an hour of trying to get the Transit to record through the main SPDIF port I finally realised that's not the IN port dumbass! Tiny arrows denote in and out on the unit. I broke out one of my ancient SPDIF block jack to mini jack cables and it's golden. I'm now listening to a playback of the PCM from Video Girl Ai disc 1 (because I have no other discs not packed up right now)

Put 'er down to human error

..and thank you Sonicboom for the Transit recommendation. I will conduct many PCM transfers now I have the capability! 8-)

Okay , okay if you guys died I would be sad for a bit
