Try tweaking the pots. That was what people here recommended I do with my LD-S9. I now have an LD-S9 brick that was worse than before, but hey maybe it'll work for you.

I played EC unplugged last night, compared analog/digital & actually the analog track is quite nice, but needs a lot more amplification from my DA50ES receiver. If I had different equipment, tube stuff etc it might be a very nice source?

Then I played Yumi Tanimura Feel Mie 91-92, again digital track is richer on my gear but analog not bad actually. Yumi really shines to me in digital..might just be preference.I might have had a bad impression of analog audio becausr last time I checked it, I was using Pioneer players which have poor audio in general.

Personally I would look for something else, IMO 16:9 for LD is not recommended, !

my 16:9 CRT works beautifully with a widescreen LD and a scaler, my DVDO VP-50, which can be picked up reasonably easily/cheaply. Robocop in original aspect ratio:

Yeah they should have made a serious sci fi war film. In the cards the martians invade, enslave humanity etc but the humans start fighting back, then build rocket ships and send troops to Mars to smash and enslave the Martians! Payback!! Wish they'd done a kind of starship troopers with that revenge story and the designs of the original.

Because the only other option would be dumb-ray. Which is dumb because old movies look too smoothed out and fake. and new movies are just dumb.

I find this discussion kind of funny... We're currently in the age of digitizing and most countries have started major restoration efforts of their films. Currently the Swedish Film Institute is restoring Det sjunde inseglet in 4K (original negative scan) and their goal is to make the film look like it did when first released back in 1957. If there's damage, they'll try to fix it. If something's missing, they'll try to fix it. If the audio has high-frequency noise, they'll try to fix it. And the list goes on.

Some may say that this is altering history. All I have to tell these people is that they have absolutley no idea of what they're talking about nor any idea how these restorations are made. If they come to a point where the damages cannot be repaired without it looking repaired, they'll just leave it as it is. Or if they cannot find any of the eventually missing frames, they won't put in any new ones unless the final results look like it was originally supposed to.

With high enough resolution (2K is actually enough for most productions), as well as uncompressed scans to work with and good source material, there are incredible possibilites for a re-release. Dirt, damages, scratches and mold were never intended to be seen in a feature film, just like chroma noise from Laserdisc isn't making the final result look anywhere near the intended image of that very same feature. DVD was certainly a step up but not really preferable on modern displays. Blu-Ray is decent but really not more. And UHD-BD... Well, now we're talking. :)

So please, get out of your trenches and see the possibilites with digital instead of the obstacle of it not being analog (which is the most illogical statement ever). I mean... third gen theatrical 35mm prints didn't look very pretty. A 2K DCP would give you results much closer to the intended look.

Resolution isn't the only factor. Smoothness and filmic quality is more important and LD has it in spades.

Like Sooty said, LD is like the finest pencil drawn on the finest paper with the finest hand but DVD and blu ray are just a guy watching a movie of the guy doing that drawing and trying to redraw it but only using a square tipped marker...

forper,

Ok, I really have to ask. Are you just trolling? I mean, comments like "judge a book by its cover, coz reading it is hard" and the fact that even the most basic review of the movie would tell you that it's a sequel and not a remake?

Just having fun with an American who seems to believe that the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" is a saying only in America. Also playing on the fact that most Americans don't get sarcasm. Yeah I guess I'm "trolling".

Do you only watch your single favorite movie and never watch anything new for the fear of a new movie not being as good as your favorite?

Pretty much, just movies from the past, new movies just don't look right to me. To me there is enough (too much) great material pre 2000 that I would rather watch than anything made today. I'm being serious here, not trolling.

Well....not all BD are DNRed...have watched recently "Venus Wars" (1986) it keeps all the original grain if you like that I recommend you.

Does it look like it does on LD (natural) or does the grain look artificial and overcompensated for? Blu Ray has a tendency to bring out defects much more than they were originally seen even without remastering.

This happened on a number of Japanese anime film re releases. One I have is the Macross DYRL? DVD remaster boxset and the grain looks terrible and over done, much prefer my super natural Perfect Edition LD box. The first LD I ever owned too.

Everything CD, used from charity shops or Japanese second hand. Have a few SACDs but can't afford a decent player to get the most out of them. I also have many CDs that I believe sound better than many SACDs.. I don't believe in ripping music I just put the disc in the tray and press play like the good ol days.

I hope that you are all well and taking good care of yourselves and your Families,

I don't have a family. Or at least any members of it that I consider to be anything more than worthless, selfish, scum-sucking trash. They might as well be dead.

I'm well though, thanks for asking.

Cut in wages and so on.

Tell me about it brother, it's the decline of the Western World. I'm still in debt for $40,000 for my uni when I was 20 at 40 years old, my wage still barely breaks the average for a fresh graduate.

My Dad got free uni, a job for life, a cheap entry to the housing market. Money for golf and toys and supporting a family on one wage. I can't afford a car let alone a family. Literally didn't earn enough for my girlfriends parents so she left me. Her family were gonna disown her and they were too important to her. I told her I didn't want her to give up her whole family for me and it wasn't that hard to convince her, secretly she thought I was a loser too I think

If you own a house or are paying it off and don't have to deal with the stress and cost to move all your laserdiscs and other stuff every few years be very very grateful, hang on to it, never lose it. You don't know how fortunate you are..

I've started reading about Ultra HD.

Things that appeal to me about it:

-The first region-free format since Laserdisc.
-Seemingly good takeup with a good chance of continuing with stock of players and new titles for a decade or more.
-Quite a few decent, non-dumbed down releases already under it's belt.
-The ability to have a single universal 4.72inch disc player (CD, SACD, DVD, UHD, USB HDDs for me)
-Decent looking packaging.
-Cool Japanese scenery discs.
-The increasing amount of Japan market anime releases with English subtitles.

This looks more and more like a potential "forever format" as it becomes less and less likely I can continue to rely on laserdisc players as my main video transport.

Don't get me wrong. I will NEVER give up on laserdisc. However it can't realistically be a daily machine for the next 20 years or more for me. The idea would be to occassionally use my LD players for my beloved music collection and those special box sets.

Drawbacks of joining the modern world:

-Will my future HDR TV contain a nice analogue comb filter for my LD player? I have to roll the dice or bring my LD player into the store before purchase? Subjective reports from online only go so far, I mean it's "good" or "bad" compared to what? I'm very happy currently with LD to a Sony wide CRT. Would I be dissapointed by LD on ANY flat screen? OLED?

-Lack of current "really nice" UHD player on the market. The Pioneer BDP-LX88 (solid build, good looks, presence) looks "really nice" to me but doesn't do native 4K. I guess I'd have to wait for Pioneer's new flagship. The Sony players are uninspiring flat bars, even their ES model. Just don't excite me. I know only what comes out of it should matter, but the machine's looks DO matter to me.

-Is "increased colour gamut" really weird on old movies? Could I turn it off?

I'm only even considering this because I'm selling off a few things and may have some cash to make the entry. Or I can continue to pay and pray for ancient LD equipment I have little expertise in maintaining.

Blu Ray never appealed to me in the same way UHD does. I tried it but never considered seriously following it. Due to bad looking packaging and too many poor releases, bargain bin effect.

I might add more here as it comes to me. Any thoughts on The Future (tm)?

It's amazing that so many here think yahoo is the only platform in Japan. I mean it was clearly stated the discs weren't sourced from y!jp then a poster here asks again "so yahoo?!!"

There's Mbok, Mercari, countless specialist web stores, then thousands of Hard Offs and recycle stores throughout the country.

I myself sourced most of my video game collection for next to nothing from suburban Japanese junk stores. Sold a PC Engine CD Rom2 and PC-FX for a 1000+% profit just yesterday.

Quick update. After preparing to move and sorting through my old school stuff I realise I was high.

The truth is still wide CRT and a solid, good looking modified DVD player like my Sony DVP-S7700 backed up by a few LD players. Media in future will be R2 DVD only..

Also sticking with the original dream of vintage Sony ES audio. Nothing else compares in the end.

20103 Twister had about 5 seconds of Philip Seymour Hoffman dialogue Ive never seen anywhere else. Id have to watch again to find the exact time.

LV 32270 Major League has a shot of Rick Vaughn in the bar by himself that lasts about 2 seconds that I have never seen on another version.

Cool, I have that. Good to know I watched the most complete version of Major League. My life is now officially better than a Blu Ray user 8-)

Yep those analogue outs sure are tempting on the LX88 but I'm now at peace with my decision to stick with vintage ES Sony for life!

Yep one of my favourite movies and one of my faves on LD! Have the special edition box set, so good.

I mean for me '80s blockbuster action/sci fi movies are an essential part of my LD collection, just the perfect way to watch (and hear!) them. Bring back that feeling of being a kid again that the DVDs and BDs just don't because they were never actually seen like they were released on BD. The LD experience is closer to the original way these movies were actually seen at the time. In analogue. They've got that old "feel" as well, That's important to me.
