As for the CRT/LCD thing, unless you have something really special few sets being made today do good job with LD. Pioneer's Kuro line was great at LD, Sony's XBR9xx series was awesome too, but these were the last great HDTVs for SD video (and games, which are an even bigger issue).
There are loads of people who say that LD looks great straight into their LCD but IMHO they don't have a clue of how good LD can look. The colors get horribly blown out and the low resolution really hampers the picture when it's blown up to three times as big as the largest LD-era TV ever made. I have a 17" CRT production monitor I use for games and making copies of LDs and I'm being serious when I say that LDs from this look WAY better than they do on any LCD. My main unit is a Sony XBR960, a 34" wide format CRT.
I haven't seen every TV in the world, and some are better than others, but if you have a late-model LCD you probably need a fancy scaler that costs more than the TV...and even then, frankly, CRT looks better.
This changes not at all with the player, btw. Good players and bad players all look the same with a garbage TV. A 97 or a S-104, money spent at that level is a band aid on a bullet hole. |

hello powerofld ! I think that the screen will shake in still mode with any video processor, except IDK video processors. I don't know why. Even lumagen can't stop the screen shaking in still mode. IDK is a really really strange creature... |

They look nice but I'm still more impressed with the CRT image I get with my setup. I've definitely seen more impressive grabs with Lumagen too. Maybe it's the films?
5th element is way too Euro for me to enjoy |

I don’t have an HLD but as far as I can tell they don’t seem to be worth the extra $ for picture quality alone, especially since an X0 can be ten times the price of a 97/99/R7G. Depending on the rest of your setup the difference may be impossible to detect. |

I agree with Zeta.
Based on the cost of any of the HLD units and also the complicated nature of maintaining them should something go wrong (fewer spare parts available for them), you'd be better off w/ a CLD-97 or even the LD-S1 & LD-S2. |

Highly dependent on how revealing the rest of your setup is. The player alone isn’t worth it.
I would start with the best display you can buy. Oleds are the way to go on modern displays and last generation pioneer or panasonic plasmas for used stuff. A modern Oled will also benefit any other format you may watch. The infinite contrast is simply amazing.
If you can add a Lumagen Radiance 2144 or Crystalio II, you might like the video on any ordinary player. Radiance will improve all other source excluding 4K, CII is antiquated and good for LD only.
You can always take it further with a hld x0 and reach LD nirvana but as I said upgrading others components will probably give you more improvements than the player alone and they will benefit all formats.
I know these aren’t cheap but the last %10 improvement is always an exponential cost add on. |

IMO the X9 isn't worth hundreds more, the X0 would be worth hundreds more... but it's thousands more, and is potentially a white elephant if something goes wrong (even Pioneer Japan can't always fix them now) |

Nope - I'm in the US. mimylovesjapan on this forum has a broken X0, and apparently Pioneer Japan can't replace pickups.
On the plus side, the CLD-97 is already 80-90% as good, at least when well calibrated |

S2 has a comparable s-video output as far as comb filter artifacts and 2D comb filter limitations go. S2 has much cleaner video from video noise. |

Tell me about it! I think the moral of the story is compare composite and S-video with your player in your ecosystem and make your own choice. |

LD-S1 → High-performance 3D comb filter → Monitor
LD-S2 → Composite or S cable → Monitor
If possible, sandwich a high performance s-vhs VCR between
Doing so may result in higher image quality
I executed and made S1 image quality higher than S2

the LD-S2 came out WAY EARLY in the era of internal comb filters and S-Video outputs. In this day and age I can't imagine in any setup where the S-Video out from an LD-S2 would look better. |

This is a shame as these are nice single sided players.
Can you post what the issues may be?? My LDS1 I believe is slipping on startup and won't play some discs, was told the rubber may need a cleaning as that could help.
But do any repairs at your own risk. |

It is very unlikely to be a motor issue. i.e. CLD-3030 slider motor holder can crack completely off in shipping. General rule of thumb is don't ship players. |

I don't know what could go wrong with a 3070 in shipping but if it really works and is packed well you should be fine.
Trouble is a lot of resellers are just testing with CD or not even testing at all and just trying their luck.
I run a 3070 and love it, there are newer easier to fix player but again not too many parts left. If you didn't pay much for that 3030 and plan on getting another 3030 or 3070 you may think about keeping for spare parts????
C++ Has more knowledge about repairs and is on the forum, kurtis is sometimes on here, not as much as in the past but I know one or both should have some players to sell????? |

Kurtis is the guru!
From my experience: CLD-3070 built better than CLD-3080, CLD-3080 has better PQ. CLD-3070 harder to work on. I've seen the CLD-3080 gear that is used to move the pickup crack in half in shipping. CLD-3070 has transit screw that is always missing, but I have not seen any issues arise from that. I just like having the transit screws + correct remote. |

yeah there was a post in the past about the transit screw not being a deal on the 3070, it may have even been Kurtis who posted it. Was a long time ago.
Never knew about the gear is that something new that's happening to them since they are even older players now??? |

I just picked up a broken CLD-3070 for $25 about two weeks ago that appears it may have the gummed up mechanism issue. Was planning on tearing it open soon to verify and fix it.
But yeah... definitely this baby is built really well and I would think it stands a chance to survive a trip in the mail. Regardless, it would still be better to just pick it up. I had to drive about 90 min to pick up mine. |
