Sticky post concerning the LD Player manuals on LDDb:

The current starting point is:

Just a little update to mention that we reshuffled a little bit the repository structure to allow for a few more types of devices:

LD Players manuals
http://manuals.lddb.com/LD_Players/

AC3RF Demodulators manuals
http://manuals.lddb.com/AC3RF_Demodulators/

MUSE (Hi-Vision) Decoders
http://manuals.lddb.com/MUSE_Decoders/

CED Players manuals
http://manuals.lddb.com/CED_Players/

I will stick for now to the following naming convention (for players):

/ Brand / Family / Model - Language _(other infos).pdf

If you happen to have a PDF manual missing or can scan yours (below 10MB would be great, you can split/multi-zip/etc. as long as it can be reconstructed on a Windows or Linux platform), just send it to: manual@lddb.com . Don't worry if you can only send JPEGs of each page, I can easily generate PDFs if needed.

To make sending HUGE scanned PDFs easier than splitting by Email, I setup a anonymous drop (upload only) URL that you can access here:

https://cloud.wilk.fr/index.php/s/pWtRSbVInEc6Te8

The password hint is : what is the video medium we are mostly collecting here? (small case, no plural)

Hi everyone,

I understand that the forum has been slowing down because, well, we already talked and discussed 99% of what could be said/explained on LD and LD Players over the years.

I can see that visitors are reading/searching the forum but less contributions these days, except maybe in the "technical questions" for Players starting to age and slowly breaking down.

There are, however, a LOT of good posts and great information laying deep in the old topics that would benefit from more exposure/indexing.
After considering several options, I decided to give "Thanks for Posts" a try: https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/thanks_for_posts
thanks.png
For now you can add a "thank you note" on a post linked to an active account (not yours obviously, this is not Facebook!) and when enough thanks are received, I'll be able to pull out a list of popular topics and posters (in quality, not in quantity or most recent posts).

If you bookmarked or liked an old post, don't hesitate to go like it to give him a chance to shine again for newcomers!

And if you want to enable notifications (PM or Email) when someone thanked you, you will have to update your User Profile here:

Zeta, what would you say are some of the best looking anime discs of GOOD movies/oavs? Disregarding DYRL and GITS as I already have those.

Let’s just make this thread about good picture quality anime LDs regardless of the quality of the program since it’s unlikely to get out of hand either way.

The aforementioned Ghost in the Shell: Premium Box (1995) [BEAL-921] set is a good one. While they did use cels on this movie the master was digital so it has that going for it. It’s also multilingual.

Picture quality on Macross The movie : Perfect Edition (1984) [BEAL-448] isn’t super awesome, IMHO but it’s pretty good. It’s certainly a must have disc. The CAV functionality alone makes it an essential Macross fan item. A movie worth watching at 1/8 speed if there ever was one.

Bubblegum Crisis: Complete Collection (1987) [BVLL-539] is one I picked up a few years ago having completely missed it back in the day. Picture quality is WAY better than the 80s pressings or the Animego versions. Everything is included, even the Bali video. Even the book is good. Easily one of the best box sets out there. Again, video quality is as good as it gets here. I can’t stress that enough.

One of the biggest box sets out there that isn’t a TV series or sports is Ghibli Ga Ippai Collection (1996) [TKLO-50180] . Again video quality here is superb. Publius was under the impression that the remaster was done in HiVision for a never released edition on that format (lord, can you even imagine what that would have cost? Then or now?) but only a regular NTSC release made it. There isn’t a lot of printed material in the white satin wrapped box with foil letters but what is inside is every Ghibli movie then ever released plus Nausicaa, the TV special I Can Hear the Ocean, the On Your Mark music video, a ton of random TV promos they did. There is also a Making Of for the movie Only Yesterday and a literal fireside chat with Miyazaki and the actual holy s**t OMG Akira Kurosawa. Damn! This is my favorite box set ever. The covers are all new. Whisper of the Heart and On Your Mark have their theatrical 5.1. Dolby tracks now. All discs have new art. Mononoke isn’t on here since that came out later. IMO it doesn’t belong here. It belongs in some Blu-ray box that begins with that movie, IMO.

If you get a first print version of Mobile Suit Gundam: Memorial Box Part 1 [BELL-1201] it will come with a big outer box to also house Mobile Suit Gundam: Memorial Box Part 2 [BELL-1202] giving you a massive box. This was, amazingly, the first time the TV version of Gundam was ever for sale. (Most fandom was and is focused on the compilation movies). Being released in the Winter of 98/99 you’d be right in assuming they made an HD master for this and use the same thing for the DVD. The covers are VERY pretty in this one. All new cel art (digital cels anyway...) which was also reused for the DVDs but here it’s all square and massive like it should be. This show doesn’t have the most amazingly clean animation ever seen but the video quality of this release is as good as it could possibly be, I’m pretty sure. The packaging is first rate as well. One thing I like about Bandai’s Gundam TV release is that in the gatefold there are chapter marks and screen shots of every episode on those discs so if you’re looking for that scene where your third favorite character dies is way easier to find than it would be with more modern packaging.

Speaking of Gundam, video quality varies with theatrical and TV releases. Char’s Counterattack kinda sucks, sadly. Usually the OVAs are pretty nice. With 0083 they made a big deal about using D2 tape and it’s in CAV so quality is super high. Every episode is available individually starting with the Boobytrap long Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory vol.01 (1991) [BEAL-421] . The earlier OVA, 0080, has a different sort of feel to it. Whereas 0083 was about quick action and...a lot of robots...0080 is more subtle. There’s a lot of detail to the backgrounds and stuff and it shines as an LD in a different sort of way. That word people use a lot here, “filmic” really applies.

I’m sure we can add a bunch more.

Yesterday I wrote an article about various versions of The Thing:

http://blog.sporv.com/disentangling-the-thing/

as this is THE place to find info about laserdiscs, I wonder if an owner of the Signature Collection could help me.

I'm trying to find out if the AC-3 track is the "real" one using the 4-track stem (or the 6-track magnetic tape master).

The best way to understand it would be to capture the AC-3 track itself, but I don't know if there is someone with the knowledge AND the technology AND the will to do that!

But there is another way to find it out; a surround system is needed, though.
Select the AC-3 track, and just go around 15m, when "Superstition" is playing; check if the song is playing from the surround speakers continuosly after Naul's shot, or just briefly only when the meeting room is shown.

Thanks in advance!

Sold as junk, but here's one for sale right now in case someone wants to burn some money :)

JPY 85,000 for a junk/tray does not open and no disc coming along...

I think the previous one sold for a few JPY 1,000's but if you don't have the discs, it's a very expensive brick!

Julien

I own two & posted the video above. It's easy to fix the tray issue; the loading belt on these units are all stretched out and it may have aged lubricant. Re-lube the tray and pop on a new belt and you're good to go.

Also, unlike what the seller seems to imply, these are not backwards compatible with standard LDs.

Compatible HDVS discs are hard enough to get, but the real problem, like all Sony LaserDisc equipment, is reliability. Many of these have many, many hours from being run in continuous loops for shows, presentations, and R&D. Both of mine had problems. One has a burnt out laser and the other has a bad board. Service manuals are discontinued/unavailable from Sony. I was able to get one of mine working by mixing & matching parts.

HDVS is an investment.

Added here for the specs (and pics to follow)

Sony HDL-2000

I added additional information.

Let me know if there is anything else you could use.

Another year, another November 28th, another reminder to remember to celebrate the sheer majesty of one of the greatest anime ever made.

Urban Square.

November 28th 1986. Happy Urban Square Day.

Very sad to learn of his passing. Came to fame here during 1975 with Highfly then in a bigger way during 1976 with the single Music which hit the No. 1 spot in The Netherlands, 3 in UK & 10 in Germany, also several other lesser chart hits were to follow. Worked with Joe Cocker, Alan Parsons, Tina Turner and many other top artists and over the last 35 years he had become associated with Night of the Proms; an annual concert series originating in Belgium on which Music had become something of an anthem over the years. I don’t think he got the true recognition that he deserved, him being first rate songwriter, guitarist and keyboard player, perhaps best described as a musician’s musician.

RIP John Miles

(this is a draft explanation that will eventually become a help section/FAQ, previous topics can be found in https://forum.lddb.com/viewforum.php?f=64)

Took me a few months but I slowly updated the code to add devices for now (parts, remote controls, etc to come later).

Why build such a database?
Same reason than the LDs database: the information is slowly fading away from internet as manufacturers/servers/online services shutdown or retire.
I think it was time to move to the next level and also document all things hardware related to LDs (and beyond) so that everyone here can manage their gears (and maybe learn a few things along the way).

I had plans for a Hardware section right since 2002 and started a draft/prototype in 2009 when laserdiscarchive.co.uk updates stopped but it remained mostly cold until we started a thread on all players, remotes, DACs, etc.

blam1 took an immense amount of his time to compile all known data in a giant Excel spreadsheet that served as a starting point for the new iteration of the database.

https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=7016
https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=5991
https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=266
https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=6564

Right now it comes with these categories: https://www.lddb.com/hardware.php

A/V Component (anything handling audio and video, such as switch boxes, scalers, converters, etc.)
A/V Receiver (Integrated Audio-Video who can do a LOT of things but ultimately feed speakers)
AC3 Decoder (devices purely handing AC3/Surround, otherwise under Sound Processor)
AC3RF Demodulator (devices handling purely AC3RF, otherwise under AC3 Decoderor Sound Processor)
Amplifier (ONLY amplification, no decoding/switching)
Auto-changer (specific to professional LD players with multiple discs capability for Karaoke)
Blu-Ray Player (usually including CD and DVD as well)
Captioning Decoder (Either Closed Caption or TELETEXT)
CD Player (might also play SACD or CDV or VCD but not DVD)
CED Player
D-VHS Player
DTS Decoder (devices purely handing DTS, otherwise under Sound Processor)
DVD Player (might also play CD, SACD or CDV or VCD but not Blu-Ray)
Graphics Decoder (Either CD+G or LD-G)
HD DVD Player (might also play CD and DVD)
Laserdisc Player (including Combi LD/DVD and related techs like HDVS, BASEBAND, WIDEBAND, etc. incompatible with standards LDs)
MUSE Decoder (both decoder and NTSC down-converters)
Pre-Amplifier (switching, decoding but no speakers output)
Sound Processor (AC3/DTS/others like CX or Digital Audio decoders, including DACs for now.)
UHD Blu-Ray Player (last generation of players able to play most discs like CD/SACD/DVD/BD/4K BD)
VHD Player
Video Processor (scalers, line doublers, enhancers, etc. mainly handling video signals)

We might add more categories if needed like (PDUs or pure DACs).

I tried to design templates for each category but in real-life there are SO MANY possible combinations and hybrid devices that it quickly showed its limitation.

So instead I opted for a global unique template for all devices that REQUIRE EXTERNAL POWER to run normally.
This mean (for most cases) stand-alone devices that you plug to the power socket on the wall. This is why remote controls will be considered as "parts" instead.

The first section has the basic common attributes (color, model, brand, dimensions, power requirements, clone/OEM, etc.).

For now I designed 3 main domains: Format Compatibility , Decoding Capability and Physical Connections .

Format Compatibility

Some players can play only one format (ex: CED or VHD) but Combi LD/DVD could play many and "universal players" can play most discs.
Some LG drives could read both BD and HDDVD, etc.

Each time you select one format a section will appear below with some specific information that can be added (DTS-compatible, region lock, etc.).

CED
VHD
LD
CD (audio)
CDV (LD content on CD)
DVD VIDEO (including HD VMD)
VCD (MPEG1)
SACD
DVD AUDIO
HD DVD
Blu-Ray (including 4K/UHD)
D-VHS

Decoding Capability

So far I have found only 3 mains decoding classes:

AUDIO (such as all the Dolby and DTS flavors, LPCM, HDCD, etc.)
MUSE (they had tons of specific connectors)
CAPTION (how far you could customize the captions in size, color, position, parental lock, etc.)

Physical Connections

This is by far the scariest section when you look at it the first time, but it's not that bad after a while when you get the logic behind it.

By trying to fully describe a lot of existing devices, I came across TONS of connectors I had never personally seen or used before.

CONTROLS IN/OUT (such as remote control repeater, triggers, DIN8, DIN5, CD Sync, RS-232, USB, Ethernet)
POWER Outlets (extra power oulets at the back to daisy chaind, either switched (on/off with the device) or unswitched (always on))
Audio IN (MANY types in both analog and digital in various standard such as RCA, BNC, fiber, XLR, Toslink, USB, jacks, MIDI)
Audio OUT (same as Audio IN + speakers connections)
Video IN (again MANY types in both analog and digital in various standards such as Coax, S-Video, BNC, DB15, Japan D, SDI, DVI, HDMI, Display Port)
Video OUT (same as Video IN)

I'm sure I missed some connectors, such as the weird SONY TV input described here: https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=10186

If more connectors, decoding, formats are needed, we will add them as we go.

For now I'd be happy if most people on the forum/website can successfully add most of their devices with accurate information and pictures whenever needed. That should keep me busy for the next 20 years of LDDb! I started coding the first alpha version around April 2002 and I setup/registered the User #1 (admin) on August 8th, 2002.

You can still see my old eBay/Only shop (static page) here . I shut it down when I left Japan. then started cataloging my own collection until I registered lddb.com and published updates on the alpha version from November 2002 and beta version early 2003 .

Working on this first version of the Hardware Database taught a LOT of things I didn't know about commercial audio/video products, including some high-end brands I never really heard about -- being completely out of my budget at that time -- but that you can find a lot cheaper today.

Please help us complete information if you have them at hand, and let's keep this fun for everyone!

I am reading "Revolutionary Technology: an introduction to the video and digital audio disc" by David K. Matthewson.
I was surprised to learn about the following! In the mid-1970s, an American company called I/O Metric Corporation created videodiscs which could be reproduced photographically:
iometric1.jpg The author says it demonstrated all of the benefits that laser videodiscs have. However, the I/O Metric system vanished without a trace. I could only find one mention of I/O Metric Corporation on Google. They worked with the US NOAA in 1974 on an atmospheric analysis system. Has anyone heard of I/O Metric before?

I found more information! The creators published an article in the Journal of the SMPTE, 1974. I was able to get a digital copy from a library. Here is what I know:

the master used ordinary silver halide film
duplication of the master could be done through simple contact printing
multiple layers could be sandwiched together for greater capacity (like DVD/Blu-Ray does)

for playback, the disc could be illuminated by white light (no laser needed)
the disc had ~7Mhz bandwidth. The limiting factor was how fast they could modulate their recording laser
a video signal could be recorded directly without using a carrier (no FM needed). They called this the "analog mode"

copies: a silver halide copy could be made by use of an internegative
alternatively, a diazo copy could be made directly, without an internegative.
"diazo materials are significantly less expensive than silver emulsions"
such copies were "essentially indistinguishable" from the master

at least 4-layer sandwich discs were possible (an micrograph shows a 4-layer disc)
both CAV and CLV recording were possible. One layer held 14.1 minutes of video at CAV. CLV "yields an increase in playing time of about a factor of two".
speculation: with four CAV layers, could you fit ~113 minutes on a disc? (14.1 * 2 * 4)

The claimed advantages of the system were "archival image quality, ease of duplication, and low cost".
