Dumbo (1941) [024 AS]
In 1941, Dumbo was released to box office acclaim. Telling the story of the elephant with big ears, this classic holds up as an adult just as much as it did as a kid. The film carries the distinction of the first Disney Animated Feature released on VHS, with a 1982 release date also matched by the first Laserdisc. In 1991, the disc was remastered with digital sound.
==Video==
The first thing you notice is that a Buena Vista logo plasters the RKO logo. Other than that, the picture is great, representing the painted cels in great detail. The Pink Elephant sequence stands out as having good picture quality.
==Audio==
The conversion of the mono sound to Laserdisc is really nice. Don't expect this disc to have high-fidelity audio like Fantasia.
==Package==
The artwork on this disc looks much better than the version released in 1982. My copy came with a business reply card, something you don't see on Laserdiscs very much. |

Jurassic Park III. It's a so-bad-it's hilarious film that would fit well alongside DTS editions of the first two films.

I find it pretty baffling that you could only get the widescreen LDs in English in France . Was there no demand for such a release in the UK?
France has a niche cinephile community that prefers watching films in their original languages, with French subtitles. France also got bilingual releases of North by Northwest, The Shining, Barry Lyndon and some other films unreleased in UK PAL Laserdisc. |

The best way to watch Singin' in the Rain on home video is the Ultra HD Blu-Ray, which has incredibly vivid HDR and a lossless version of the original mono mix. If you want all the supplements, you need the CAV Criterion Laserdisc and the 2002 DVD.

The Fullscreen and Widescreen AC3 versions of My Fair Lady contain a unique cut of the film where Audrey Hepburn sings Wouldn't It Be Loverly instead of Marni Nixon. I felt that this helps the transformation of Eliza Doolittle from a flower girl to a proper lady, which in this version includes refining her singing voice.

One of my favorite Criterion Laserdiscs is Casablanca, not just because it's my single favorite film, but because of the exclusive supplements. In this set, there's a treatment for a thankfully unproduced sequel called Brazzaville that would have been to Casablanca what Son of the Mask is to The Mask.

Since my grandmother really wanted to see the John Ford film The Informer, I bought a Laserdisc copy so she and I can watch it together.

One example of such a film is The Shining, where the modern 5.1 remix is unlistenably awful. The mono mix on the Laserdisc is so much better than the 5.1.

I only buy DiscoVisions if they have an odd number of sides, as what draws me into DiscoVision is unveiling the secrets of the disc's dead side.

Another example is the Star Wars Trilogy, where the JSCs blow away any of the modern formats in picture, sound and cut of the film.

I recently got the LD of Queen: Live in Rio, and plan to watch it soon. Freddie Mercury was taken from this Earth far too soon.

The time compressed US Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back fullscreen releases are garbage, and even buying them for wall art is a bad idea as the widescreen CBS/FOX releases have the same artwork. They are just as worthless if you want a fullscreen Laserdisc of Star Wars and Empire, as the CBS/FOX CAV releases are at their normal intended speed.
