Dumbo (1941) [024 AS]

In 1941, Dumbo was released to box office acclaim. Telling the story of the elephant with big ears, this classic holds up as an adult just as much as it did as a kid. The film carries the distinction of the first Disney Animated Feature released on VHS, with a 1982 release date also matched by the first Laserdisc. In 1991, the disc was remastered with digital sound.

The first thing you notice is that a Buena Vista logo plasters the RKO logo. Other than that, the picture is great, representing the painted cels in great detail. The Pink Elephant sequence stands out as having good picture quality.

The conversion of the mono sound to Laserdisc is really nice. Don't expect this disc to have high-fidelity audio like Fantasia.

The artwork on this disc looks much better than the version released in 1982. My copy came with a business reply card, something you don't see on Laserdiscs very much.

A Japanese Laserdisc of Making of Star Wars/SPFX Empire pressed by Pioneer Japan with an SPFX Empire side so rotted the analog audio was distorted.

Jurassic Park III. It's a so-bad-it's hilarious film that would fit well alongside DTS editions of the first two films.

I find it pretty baffling that you could only get the widescreen LDs in English in France . Was there no demand for such a release in the UK?

France has a niche cinephile community that prefers watching films in their original languages, with French subtitles. France also got bilingual releases of North by Northwest, The Shining, Barry Lyndon and some other films unreleased in UK PAL Laserdisc.

The best way to watch Singin' in the Rain on home video is the Ultra HD Blu-Ray, which has incredibly vivid HDR and a lossless version of the original mono mix. If you want all the supplements, you need the CAV Criterion Laserdisc and the 2002 DVD.
