Hi,
For a few years I've maintained a website where I compare LD and DVD audio tracks to their blu-ray counterparts. Most are better, but some are worse. The gist of it is that since the early-mid '90s, noise reduction has obliterated detail from films in the same way that video NR has made some films on blu-ray look waxy and blurry.
If anyone here has the ability to capture any LaserDiscs they own, I'd be happy to compare them to their blu-ray counterparts. |

Definitely "THE WARRIORS".
So far I've got it on: - DVD (Both the original bare-bones DVD release and the Director's Cut) - Laserdisc - UMD (Universal Media Disc) - VHS - Betamax UPDATE: - Blu-ray (Imprint Edition) - VHD - CED - HD-DVD - Video 2000 |

| I can’t disagree with you. The first Star Wars release was made with a filthy, dirty print. I thought I was watching the opening battle through a tornado of garbage at the dump. Nope. It was all in the print. |

We're starting this thread to document releases to avoid at all costs:
Tom and Jerry Cartoon Festival Volume 1 (MGM/UA Home Video, ML100019, 1983 USA): Beyond garbage picture and sound quality that is literally unwatchable. If you want these shorts on LD, get The Art of Tom and Jerry.
The King And I (Magnetic Video, 1005-80, 1981 USA): Cropping a CinemaScope film to 1.33:1 is bad enough, but between terrible cropping and color grading it's best to avoid this one. At least the sound is decent on this one.
My vote on this one is for the U.S. release by HBO Video of "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins" (TVL3676). The transfer is so bad that the picture keeps going in and out of focus throughout the entire disc! It's absolutely painful to watch, as it makes your eyes hurt by the time it's over! :wtf: To make matters even worse, they claim that it's over two hours long, even though it's on a single disc! Get the Japanese release instead (SF078-5187), although it is under the alternate title "Remo: Unarmed and Dangerous". At least the Japanese got the running time correct (116 minutes), and managed to keep the picture in focus!

I finally finished my own complete collection:
All movies (!) released on LaserDisc in Germany. The last missing one "Von Ryan's Express" just arrived.
I hope that the LDDB is complete considering the German releases. I also included the few that officially were released in other countries but have German teletext subtitles. It (unfortunately) does not include German (language) movies released in other countries. Those Asian releases are just too hard to find.
I also have the different variants like Schlafes Bruder DTS with and without PALplus, the discs that have cover or version variants with the same Ref# (Werner, Last Boyscout, Lethal Weapon 1+2, Tango & Cash, ...) and the various Columbia releases that exists with RCA Colombia / Colombia Pictures or Colombia Tristar Pictures logo. Not sure if I catched all variants though. The LDDB is likely incomplete on that part. |
