Just watched Easy Rider; first time I've ever seen this movie.
I gotta say, my feelings about it mirror those for Conquest of the Planet of the Apes fairly closely, in the sense that I both hate this movie for reminding me that despite being 50 years old, it feels like we're still struggling with the same crap to this day, and admire it for it's ability to evoke such feelings and I guess that renders it timeless in a way - except unlike with the Planet of the Apes sequel, there is no sense of catharsis to be found anywhere, which has left me particularly frustrated. |

Yeah, it was the original.
It was pretty grim, but I think I liked it better than Easy Rider, the story didn't feel like a massive waste of time for both myself and the characters. |

Koyaanisqatsi, for some weird reason. Must've watched it eight times by now.
It's not exactly what you'd call an attention-grabber, but it certainly has managed to grab mine.
I wonder if it's the autism. |

Just watched It's Alive (1974).
Wow, that was...not very good.
Why? Was it dead? :D It was a horror movie clearly made to cash in on the success of Rosemary's Nightmare Baby in that extremely niche genre of "scary movies specifically aimed at expectant parents".
A lot of the characters' decision making didn't feel organic, the editing is weird, the mutant baby is pretty obviously a full-grown person in a costume, and there are some shots that honestly feel like they're straight out of an early Peter Jackson movie which just comes across as really jarring in an otherwise pedestrian film. The mother is quite understandably losing her marbles but the movie doesn't really focus on her as much as it does on the father.
I know what you're thinking, but I'm gonna be totally honest, you'd probably find it boring, too. It's not good and it's not bad enough to be entertaining, it's just incredibly mediocre. The fact that they actually re-released it whole three years later with a new marketing campaign before anybody paid any attention to it should be pretty telling. The best part about the film is the delightfully creepy poster. |

It says "movie edition" on the cover so it's probably not the full version.
The different cuts of the OVA are kind of sketchy anyhow. The movie edition of the original is shorter than the OVAs, but the movie edition of 2 has an entire additional scene versus the OVA version. |

| I would imagine quite a few people who buy or even play older games at all are already familiar with this. I distinctly remember my mother showing me an article in the newspaper a while back talking about Super Mario 64 being sold for a million dollars or something and I knew immediately something was wrong. |

Japanese releases of non-Japanese movies are usually in their native languages with hard-coded Japanese subtitles. Some releases are also dual lingual and will have the original audio on the digital tracks and a dubbed version on the analog tracks for example. I have never come across a Japanese release that has English subtitles. Well the LD+G subtitles are usually in English but that's not really relevant.
Anyway I looked the movie up on the database and since it's a French movie, I'm gonna guess it's going to be in French so unless you speak French or can read Japanese, it's probably not going to be very useful to you. |

Next up I watched The Beyond via Jeff's video service. Jeff appears to like the Shameless Blu Ray release with the sepia opening sequence, so that's what I had to settle for too. Apparently the Shameless transfer is noticeably worse than the older release from Arrow which I'm still hoping to get my hands on some day, unfortunately it's long since out of print and the US release (which does include the soundtrack on a CD, and I absolutely love) is region locked and I just don't want to deal with that crap.
I do agree that the movie is a bit all over the place; from what I've heard, the decision to include zombies wasn't Fulci's own idea, and some of the scenes seem rather unnecessary, like the little girl who gets to watch her mom gets dissolved by a toppled jar of acid, but on premise I thought it was quite cool, and I particularly liked the incredibly dark ending, which is rather unusual for me.
For some reason the scene that sticks out to me as the most memorable one is the one with the blind woman on the bridge, which I found just delightfully creepy, probably thanks to the accompanying piano solo. |

I held a presentation about disc based home video formats a while back at work, which lead to me having to do some research on TeD as well. It took me a while to realize that the flexible disc folded around a cylinder when inserted into a player, like you would load a paper into a typewriter, which is pretty nuts and is also probably why so many of the discs haven't really stood up to the ravages of time. Although them being almost 50 years old probably doesn't help. I was never able to find out if the discs are single or dual sided and if the 10 minute runtime is for one side or the whole disc.
Probably because of Finland's proximity to Germany, my boss had actually heard of it. I guess at least a few people over here imported the things back in the 70's, even though every single thing released on it would only be in German. |

Well this could probably be the last Japanese laserdisc, or at least an LD bought from Japan, in a long time. Japan Post added Finland to their sh!tlist and now the only delivery options from Japan to Finland are DHL and surface, so the most expensive and the slowest ones - and a lot of online retailers don't even offer both.

...unless, of course, someone points me out to that other CGI box set on buyee again or something which I'd have to ship via DHL anyway. |

Spotted this in a youtube comment section. This isn't something I would normally do, but I just had to share this because you gotta read it to believe it sometimes; True. This reminds me of people who say Laser Disk had 440 lines. Not true. Most laser disks (the affordable ones) were no more than 250. A Laser Disk could get 440 lines with the 5.1 AC3 format. One proplem. To achieve 440 lines the disk was limited to 30 per side. Like a film reel. Yes they were machines that could switch sides but these were top of the line models that were VERY EXPENSIVE.
2 hour movie - 2 disks over 4 sides.
3 hour movie - 3 disks over 6 sides.
4 hour or close to four hour movies i.e. Gone With The Wind, Lawerence Of Arabia, Ten Commandments. - 4 disks over 8 disks.
These special edition Laser Disks were $80 - $150. And that was back in the day (1986) when the minimum wage in Ontario was $3.15 an hour. And you could only seen the 440 lines if you had one those very large, heavy and ridiculous rear projection televisions. Assuming they had the S connection.
A 440 line Laser Disk would look better on the 250 line CRT monitor but you wouldn't get the 440 lines. Point out all the things in this comment that are incorrect! |

Any truth that the original Star Wars release on DVD was just dumped from the Definitive Laserdiscs?
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Original_unaltered_trilogy
I recently came across these old DVDs at a garage sale locally. Did a damn fine job if that is the case Nah, people seem to mistake Laserdisc masters for actual Laserdiscs. The masters would probably be on a quadruplex tape or something. Since they're a generation up from the LDs, the DVDs look slightly better on some areas than the actual LDs, such as the black levels. |

Watched Forbidden Planet for the first time since lord knows when.
It's actually pretty amazing how well the optical effects hold up; I've seen newer films where the effect isn't quite as seamless as it is here; but the most impressive part of the film to me is still probably the script, and how well ahead of it's time it was. In a way, Forbidden Planet laid the groundwork for science fiction decades to come, especially Star Trek; rather than bug-eyed monsters created by radiation, it is humans themselves aboard a flying saucer flying to alien planets. Although we never see a single Krell, they're never once implied to have been the hostile type, although I suppose you could read their failure to predict the outcome of activating their machine the result of hubris.
With minor changes this could've easily been an episode of Star Trek, although undoubtedly with a lot less impressive special effects work. |

I knew this was a dead thread the second I noticed the last post is from forper.
Anyway!
I just finished reading Judge Dredd Complete Case Files volume 1 and I think the biggest shock to me was the amount of content I'd actually read as a child; I guess when they started printing Judge Dredd in Finland in the late 80's they had a lot of catching up to do, and in addition to a series of albums (the really large tpb format normally used for stuff like Asterix or Tintin) there was also a short-lived monthly magazine which I had a single issue of. Which unfortunately also meant that they reprinted stories wildly out of order, the first album had like three different Chief Judges, showing just how far apart they were chronologically and how they really just did not care, outside of the massive multi-issue story arcs which usually ended up having at least two whole albums dedicated for them. The first volume of CCF though only contained two major story arcs, the rebellion of the robots (which was a far cry from the later epics in terms of scale) and the Luna-1 assignment which was more of a series of vignettes rather than a single long-running story. Still, it was a lot of fun seeing these early stories in their proper order and how the writing and art evolved over the years.
Except for Brian Bolland. He's always been excellent. |

| As far as I know, Roger Rabbit wasn't actually tinkered with until the blu-ray? It's the accompanying theatrical shorts (that aren't included on that release anyway) that got cut up quickly after release. |

| James Bond films are one of those film franchises where, if you wanted to search the database for all of them, it's pretty difficult since pretty much none of them have 007 or James Bond in the actual title. Putting them into a collection would probably help a great deal. There's definitely enough releases for one! |

I love the case, it's like a plastic/card material, like modern Blu Ray mediabooks. The film is the original Italian print with a German dub track. Pretty sure mediabooks are more like actual books, but there is/was a German or Austrian distributor named X-Rated Kult who used to put out DVDs on cases like this one, plastic clamshells where the art is printed right onto the case itself. I used to have Joe D'Amato's Caligula 2 but I sold it and regretted it ever since. Was it a good movie? Hell no, but I loved the representation.
Anyway, I got some more Kenner Aliens.
