Single sided doesn't always mean less complex. Take the LD-S2 for example. If something ever goes wrong with mine, I'd probably faint. Just getting it disassembled to the point where I could clean and apply new grease to the tray roller was awful.

The LD-S1, LD-S2, HLD-X0 are obviously edge cases though. Maybe throw in some of the older players like the CLD-900 (I haven't opened one up but it doesn't look fun).

The CLD-S201 I'm a fan of. It sits before the CLD-S104 (which has the most fragile M-Holder), but after they stopped using the white rail that always cracks (CLD-1070, CLD-1080, etc). I actually was working on a player where the piece of the rail that is usually partially cracked had completely broken off so the pickup could no longer traverse before or after that point.

The biggest issue with single side players for me is almost all of them lack CLV trick play.

Best looking for me is the LD-S2.

Pretty much this. i.e. CLD-V820

I don't know much about Sony players, but it should be 33mm for the MDP-333 and I think the MDP-533D is the EU model of that. You can always try a little higher and lower. I don't know why Sony made the height adjustable.

Have you tried playing a CD?

Hi, welcome to the forum.

Pretty much what Zeta said. If you only have issues with that disc, it is more than likely not your player.

It really isn't. I think the industrial moniker can be a little misleading.

Yeah I would obtain the service manual that covers the adjustments for your player or one that matches close enough and go from there. Mark or take photos of the existing settings.

Digital audio issues do not always mean the pickup is getting weak, but it does seem like the pickups are compatible based on https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=2782

Since you are talking about swapping out the pickup, you'll need an oscilloscope so I would just go through the adjustments listed in the service manual before actually swapping them out. It sounds like it is in need of some. I'm not familiar at all with Panasonic units so I'm not sure if you'll need a 8" LD in order to reach all of the adjustment points while it is playing.

I suspect some CU-CLD remotes share the same electronics inside...?
Interesting. I haven't thought about this. I have disassembled many backlit remotes (usually to properly stop corrosion), but I haven't paid attention to the components. Looking back at photos of a CU-CLD121 and CU-CLD098 that I happened to take, the boards are marked ALPS which I believe is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alps_Electric

I don't like disassembling these if I don't have to, but the next time I do I'll document all the components.

I clean them with a cotton swab damp with water.

As kris said, this can sometimes resolve the issue or just fix it temporarily.

Thanks. Those look to be the same ICs then in the CU-CLD121.

I use Novus #1 as well. It can also be used on the covers (works great on the glossy ones that have become dingy).

Earlier players should be able to take more weight than the later ones. I know the two support bars that run from the front to the back of the chassis of a CLD-Dx03/CLD-Dx04 can bend easily at the back. Care has to be taken if you are removing the clamper so you don't press down too hard while unscrewing it. I wan't to say that the bonnets are more flimsy on the mid to late 90s players as well.

Pioneer writes "Do not place heavy objects such as a television or TV monitor on top of the player." in the user manuals for the record. I can't imagine someone putting a CRT on top  .

Welcome to the forum.

If the tray did not open on its own, it probably needs a new belt. Looking at the service manual, it looks like it is responsible for raising and lowering the optical pickup as well, so if you are lucky it could just be a belt replacement.

The service manual says it is part 3-513-066-xx
Looking at the belt cross reference document uploaded here, the belt is a SCX4.9

This is the multimeter I use https://www.petervis.com/meters/dt830d/dt830d.html Is it possible to check voltages with it? I connected the power to the player and tried using the DCV part of the multimeter but was only geting a reading of 001 or 002. Again, I've no idea what I'm doing!
Yes, just keep in mind some parts are AC and some are DC. i.e. voltage up to the two center legs of D1 (the bridge rectifier that rectifies AC into DC) is AC. The outer legs are DC. If you were to check F5, you would be looking for +12VDC so you would set your meter to DCV. Be careful not to accidentally short anything.

I'm struggling to check caps - some show me a reading when I measure Ohms, but others don't and I'm not sure why.
These need to be removed from the board to check with a multimeter, but as nextwednesday said, you might as well just replace them all at that point. To be clear, I am referring to the aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

I downloaded the CLD-V860/CLD-2750K service manual but it only seems to like the VWR1268 parts and not the VWR1247! I could theoretically change all the suspect parts but I don't know their value and can't find any of the capacitors in the service manual.
VWR1247 looks identical to VWR1268 at a glance. I just posted that because the VWR1247 scan is cleaner. Go with what is on the board first. Capacitors will have their capacitance and voltage labeled on them. i.e. 2200uF 25V. It looks like the two large caps in the top right are 180uF 250V.

Remove the plastic notch on the back of the chassis to see if you can get a better look. I can't tell what (if anything) is getting caught here. The pickup is bouncing back and forth right about where the mechanism tilts up/down on the side change.

I recently acquired a Pioneer CLD-S201 (which I understand is a bare bones/low level machine)
That is why I like it.

In the world of laserdisc players, if it ain't really broke, don't fix it. It still might be worth it to eject the tray, unplug the power and take a look inside. See if there is anything loose in the player or any capacitors that are leaking.

For the record, IC405 (PD0093A) is the character generator chip. Video in on pin 17, video out on pin 15.

There was a trade group called the Laser Disc Association that certified releases based on sales.

50k: 3 stars
75k: 4 stars
100k: 5 stars

Source: Billboard Vol. 107, No. 4 Page 76

It looks like they changed their name to Optical Video Disc Association around 1996.

The earliest mention I found of this organization was in a May 1992 Billboard article commenting on 1991 Karaoke unit sales.

You can visit ovda.org via https://web.archive.org/ . Looks like it went dead after 1999.

Some interesting US sales data from the site:
48,776 LD players sold in the US in 1997
2,410,000 LDs sold in the first half of 1997

Titles in bold are in the Top 100 here. I tried to match the most likely title. I do not know if it includes prior releases or the P&S versions.

Additionally they had lower criteria (10k/20k/40k) and a separate list for special special editions that are not included above.

That’s good sales info. I’m glad someone brought up this otherwise worthless organization. :)
 Yes indeed

Can't believe how LD lasted as long as it actually did with these types of sales.
With Lion King CLV bringing in potentially $3 million+ and the boxset bringing in another potential $2.5 million+ that seemed decent to me..... until I read the VHS release brought in an estimated $520 million just in the US.

Looks to be nearly identical to the CLD-980/1070/1080/V2400 mechanically speaking.

Pros:
One of the few single-sided players with optical out
Service manual is available

Cons:
Recombined composite output
White rail that is used to move the pickup always cracks (I have only seen one player out of four or five where this actually was a problem)

I don't think this would be an upgrade over any Denon player, but having two players is certainly an upgrade from one. As far as the knob assembly, it is part VXA1574. Pioneer says VXA1904 can be substituted.

Glad to see you bought it. It is nice seeing these players getting cleaned up and put back together. It is a good model to learn on as well.

I know it's not the best player but I'm excited to have a second one.
Personally, I'm quite fond of these "entry-level" players.

FYI the CLD-31 is an Elite model of this player with what appear to be minor power and audio upgrades and an extra S-Video output.

The CLD-Dx01, CLD-Dx02 can have eject problems ranging from not being able to eject at all to struggling to eject. I believe this might also be applicable to the CLD-2090/3090.

If the belt looks good, it it is probably the grease Pioneer used that has turned into sticky, dark orange goop. To properly resolve this, the clamper needs to be removed, cleaned, and then white lithium grease applied to where the old grease was. The rest of the loading mechanism can benefit from this as well (particularly the slide cam, but I do not have photos of that).

1. Remove the two screws (already removed in this photo) and retaining clip.

There isn't any way to disable auto flip, is there? It's a Pioneer CLD-D502. So far all I know that's wrong with it is that the door sometimes sticks on opening and there's something wrong with the flipper.

Just press the Side A button instead of Play.

It might be worth taking the top off and posting a video of the issue.

Can I assume then that it comes with the same laser that would have been fitted within other PIONEER players of the time?
The three lasers I know of are the 632.8nm (red/orange) HeNe gas laser used in the early models, the 780nm (infrared) semiconductor laser used in the vast majority of players (with the LD-700 in 1983 being one of the first), and the 670nm (red) semiconductor laser used in HLD players.

I posted that because I believe if RLVs show video of any sort, they are not blank. Essentially, the special dye-containing layer either has a signal on it or it doesn't. So I'm glad you took another look!

It might have been common to pad the start of the disc in an effort to reduce noise or when the customer wanted the disc to start at a specific frame. (https://web.archive.org/web/19991104040223/http://www.laserdisc-recording.com/infoguide.html)
