Yep. Definitely marked as 1983 on the bottom of the sleeve. The concert was filmed in June 1982.

I had a look in to BBFC history and there were certificates used between 1982 and 1985 that include the U certificate on this disc. Same design too. However they were for cinema use only (until 1984).

I guess it's possible this is a very late 1983 release with a voluntary certificate placed on it ready for 1984 to save a sleeve redesign? This happened often with skin flicks and DPP horror titles to try and fool police in to thinking the BBFC had classified them.

There is no record of the concert in the BBFC database so I would assume it was never submitted for classification?

This appears on my disc too:

So while doing some research about the Imagination Laserdisc I received yesterday, I happened upon a music magazine archive. Lot's of great archives to search there and really nicely arranged information reproduced from vintage melody rags.

Anyway, check out this absolute beaut of an 'article' from the November 1983 issue of One Two, Testing magazine (with Kajagoogoo on the cover no less!). You'd never get away with it today.

I wish wish WISH that the Domesday team could do some sort of crowd funding project to get complete kits (all the boards, RF cable etc) in to more hands.

On the other hand it is great to see the Domesday Duplicator being used in a commercial project such as this so that we can all benefit from it. Especially as Project A-Ko is great too!

I'll be following this one with interest for sure. What a great moment for the future of Laserdisc (and VHS?) preservation. The geniuses behind the Domesday Duplicator and of course Dr. Happycube M.D should be very proud of what they have achieved. Bravo!

N.B It also states they are preserving and restoring the sequels too. Great news!

I won't have these for a few months as I have a bit of a haul of stuff in an order from Japan already and will have to now ship this stuff by sea.

Posting the link below because if I don't do it now it's likely nobody will ever believe me. Yahoo auction listings seem to.disappear fairly quick once they end.

I just picked up 21 assorted Driver's Eyes F1, Rally and misc Laserdiscs...........

........for 1 Yen.

I didn't think the seller would honour the auction. There were 5 other people watching it. But anyway, I won. So yay.

Thanks a mil, I couldn't believe the seller let them go for ¥1 (or €0.007  ) but it's all paid for now and the domestic shipping was super cheap too. Can't complain!

It was seeing mention of them on LDDB that piqued my interest in the F1 discs. I love the wild Group B rally cars of the 1980's too. I am hoping to see wild Peugeots, Lancia's and the Tyrell and March 6 wheeler cars!

I will make sure to add any missing titles to LDDB.

EDIT: Just noticed there is a Targa Florio disc in the pile! I found one on YouTube from 1973. Check out the image quality for 1973, it's incredible!

But like some of you, I'm more intrigued by the possibilities of what this project means for lost media restoration as a whole moving forward. Sentai Filmworks caught flack for their Maiden Japan label Blu-Ray release of "Xabungle" not even two years ago because that title, like A-ko, no longer has a master copy and so they ripped LDs for that release. Sadly, I missed out on buying that limited release before it sold out and the flippers began re-marketing it for $200. But just the fact it finally got licensed and released should have been enough to have made everyone who was fortunate enough to have scored a copy very happy.

Interesting, is there a forum or site that says which releases are direct rips from LDs and which are not?
I was trying to watch angel cop last night streaming and I swear it was a rip from an LD.

If this is the case then I now know why the anime LDs are still commanding high prices.

Angel Cop is from Betamax masters. It's all that is left from source material apparently.

I'm not giving up. I'll make a serious business offer to purchase the remaining parts inventory in bulk.

I'd be happy to throw in a few Yen if it helps. I would like to think others would be keen to help too. Think along the lines of the guy who bought up all the deLorean blueprints, inventory and factory casts from Belfast. He can now make 100% accurate parts for deLorean's forever. I think they are even looking to start building new DMC-12's again soon.

If you were successful in purchasing the remaining inventory it might be a good idea to scan the parts so that reproductions could be 3D printed or cast if possible. An expensive venture in both time and money, but surely worth it?

Best of luck.

WOWZERS!

First off, on a personal note, I cannot believe I missed this announcement back in late 2019. Anyway, it seems Grindhouse Releasing have pulled off a major coup and are going to be releasing the legendary, and until 2015 presumed lost forever, It Happened One Sunday (to give it one of it's 97,000 different names). The now infamous and legendary masterpiece batshit crazy self-important film by notorious conman and utter lunatic Palmer Rockey!

Grindhouse have put up a teaser on YouTube (not sure why the quality is so hokey) which seems to have the title card Love Is Deep Inside, one of the films later titles. Meaning the reels found in Los Angeles back in 2015 are probably from a later 1980 cut of the film and not the 1974 original but it's better than nothing!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkIiCC8s8GU

EDIT: Grindhouse released a cleaned up 4K restoration clip just 4 months ago! Rockey's on his way!!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5cU8oYglEM

If you have no idea who this bloke is, have a read of the book his ex-wife wrote (available from Jeff and other places). It's unreal what an eejit this lad was. Yer wan funded the film basically from her post office savings. He was so convinced he was a megastar that he hired a limo to drive him to the screening of the film that he put on himself!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOvnkTZDM2c

I bought the soundtrack album a few years ago. It was re-issued on CD as the vinyl original from 1974 is beyond hyper rare. Even if you traveled to other galaxies no one would have a copy of it (EDIT: I tell a lie, there's 2 'PR-2-LP' copies on Discogs for $275 and $450 respectively). The photo on the cover is of yer man in a rented suit in front of a bunch of locals who stood outside the theatre wondering who this lad was attending his own film!

The YouTube clip above is, as far as I am aware, the first time in history anyone has even seen a glimpse of the film, aside from those who attended the screening back in 1974. The film is reportedly dreadful (we're talking a cavernous deep sea trench of stench that stretches TRILLIONS of miles below the benchmarks set by Battlefield Earth, Batman and Robin, Sex Lives of the Potato Men, Planet of the Pitts, Plan 9 From Outer Space and so on). Sure you can tell as much just from the video above!

Either way, this is genuinely historic as it really was thought to be destroyed and yer man died in 1994 so it may never have been found. Bring on the pre-orders!!! :D

Aside from jog wheel functionality I use a Harmony Elite to control my CLD-D925 most of the time. Folk may well choose to go down that road or use a One4All-type remote when supplies of official remotes dry up?

Cadillac Ranch (1996) [ID3720BM]

https://media.movieassets.com/static/images/items/movies/posters/8a1775588c5ce354c386789d70806df0.jpg

I like Christopher Lloyd because he is in the best film ever made. Back To The Future.

Cadillac Ranch however, is a film on his CV that I had never heard of. Until writing these very words I wasn't even aware that Cadillac Ranch is a real place.

I bought this on a whim with some other discs. I always watch or use the stuff I buy and collect. No use letting it sit on the shelf! So tonight I decided to spin this Laserdisc of what appears to be a relatively unknown film (and not on Blu Ray or better).

The blurb and journo quotes branded Cadillac Ranch a more tender version of Thelma and Louise. It's nothing like feckin' yer wan and yer wan!

Cadillac Ranch is more of a by the numbers road trip slash saccharin friendship film with a middlingly gritty edge. I hope that hasn't put you off because it's actually an alright film. Granted some of the acting is a little wooden in places, and the plot is somewhat rushed and a bit of a flim flam. Yet it remains an enjoyable view. 104 minutes saunters along fairly quickly.

What I did like most was that the film doesn't really centre so much around the most obvious character. Christopher Lloyd is reasonably well utilised too and doesn't really overshadow the whole feature by being the big name here.

The disc isn't one of the better ones I have seen. It's presented in 2:35:1 which is nice but the image is a little soft and over saturated. It did look a lot better with some tweaking on my DVDO VP50 Pro though.

Alas the flip side suffered from a lot of dropout speckles but was still watchable enough. I'd invested in 2/3's of the film already and was more than able to see it through to the end credits.

Audio wasn't great, which is a shame as it was released in cinemas with THX slapped on board. What I got was a badly balanced disc with some scenes sounding muffled and gunfire or car door slams, for example, booming out of the centre. It's just all a bit off kilter and a bit of a let down.

I'd certainly watch Cadillac Ranch again. Maybe on a Sunday afternoon or something. But I'd watch it on DVD or better (whenever an HD release appears) and hopefully that would have better audio.

Pick this one up if you find it super cheap, but don't go knocking your pipe out over it.

Berlin Blues (1989) [31072]

https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/original/omqU24YPHnhc9vZuGPNiJUVJuk7.jpg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEhkTej9QkQ

Another disc I picked up on a whim and am again pleasantly surprised with. It turns out that Berlin Blues is a super obscure thriller/drama pumped out of the wonderful Cannon Films stable.

You can pick up Berlin Blues on an R2 DVD from Spain, however it only has a Spanish soundtrack, making this English Laserdisc somewhat sought after. Berlin Blues isn't available anywhere (bar an inferior VHS) else at the time of writing.

The film itself is actually rather good. Certainly not awards worthy but absolutely worth your time. The big cast draw here is Keith Baxter, but everyone puts in a decent effort here. The film revolves around two friends both in love with the same woman who sings at popular music venue Berlin Blues. It's more than just a flaccid helmet of a romantic drama, Berlin Blues has a political edge to it as the two brothers live on opposite sides of the wall, and one of them wants to defect...

The musical pieces are a surprise here (composed by Lalo Schifrin). They are EXTREMELY 80's (and I love that). Lots of sax, moody stage lighting and posing, fingerless gloves etc. Accompanying the musical element of the film is a superb audio track on the Laserdisc. It's analogue, with a choice of CX on or off, and that's all you are getting here. Yet it is really nicely mastered. As with many discs I have watched, this one too seems to have wonderful audio but is mastered just a little too low, so you wili need to give your volume knob a bit of welly to get the best out of this disc.

Picture quality is sensational, especially as the film is very dark with a lot of blue tones and fluorescent street lighting which could easily maul any hope of a decent image transfer.

The film looks like a direct transfer of the original reels and is all the better for it. If I had to gripe it would be that the disc is 4:3 letterboxed so you end up watching the film windowboxed. It does look fairly juicy if you switch on panorama mode on your video processor, however I don't like messing about with original AR's so I just watched it as God intended but upscaled to 1080i50.

Berlin Blues looks and sounds superb. Definitely ranks as one of the better discs I've seen. It's not a bad film to boot. You could spend 100 minutes watching something far worse. Give this one a try if you happen to come across it on your travels.

No it is an English language film. It just seems Spain is the only place it appeared on DVD as far as I can see. A shame really as it is an alright little May to December film. A 'nice' window in to Germany's past too (I of course use that term very loosely) with lots of scenes filmed at the wall and border.

That's cool, and it's not SECAM!

I picked up the Signature Collection LD a couple of months back. It's the USA version though not the Japan version. I think the two differ slightly, I'd need to re-check. The main thing is though the uncensored commentary is right there on the USA disc so I'm happy out on a personal level.

Post subject: My new LD player!
Posted: 07 Oct 2020, 10:08

This website and forum is a terrible influence. After reading up on many posts about the wonders of Japanese import players and arguments over which comb filter is better than another, if Y/C separation quality is determined by the number of chloride and ammonium compounds in platinum molecules that destabilise if elevated more than 13cm above sea level in your uncle's sisters next door neighbours aunt's second cousin twice removed's nephews born out of wedlock b*****d distant half brothers uncle's mum's husband's home theatre amplifier that is suspended on magnetically floating noise dampening blocks made out of marble, plutonium and myrrh.

I decided to import a new LD player.

Given my lowly setup of a VP50 Pro and Yamaha APD-2 and Yamaha YSP-2700 which couldn't possibly compete with some of the intergalactic mad gear some of ye lads have, I figured my CLD-925 needed an NTSC buddy to hang out with.

Here's my new Pioneer CLD-R7G.

The snaps below were taken by the proxy in Japan as I wanted to make sure the player was as described by the seller, he or she had mentioned dents (or at least the auto translation did so I was concerned). I got it for a really good price so was concerned it may be a lemon. The best part of it is that the player has (according to the seller) been maintained. He or she purchased it recently from another YAJ seller who maintains players and probably just flips them on for a bit of cash in the pinny. The seller says he or she has digitised there collection and now wants to sell the player as they don't need it any more.

I didn't get a reply to what maintenance had been performed on it from the seller, so I asked the original (i assume) seller what maintenance is performed on the players they have listed (same bundles offered with their listings: LD player, new old stock CLD-R5 remote control, new RCA cables and a photocopied manual). That seller did respond and said (I'll bullet point it instead):

New belts
Pickup lens cleaned with 'direct alcohol' :?:
Upper and lower pickup rails were greased with silicone grease.
Pickup rails and switches disassembled and cleaned as needed.
Display panel disassembled and cleaned.
Dust removal cleaning around the internal frame and board has been made.
Appearance cleaning. And so on. Thank you.

Seems fairly good news to me. Hopefully it arrives in one piece. It didn't have the original remote so I bought one separately on YAJ and will have it shipped the same time. It's likely going to go by boat so I figured to post the snaps here rather than wait 3 or 4 months and it arrives smashed to pieces. :?

Here's the snaps the proxy took for me:

Now to source an outrageously expensive S Video cable and some of those magnetically floating marble blocks...

The good folk at TMS have released all of the dubbed episodes on YouTube! If you are outside of the USA you will need to use a VPN to watch the episodes.

It looks great! The art style I think looks a bit like Willy Fogg (one of my all-time favourites) or Dogtanian (D'Artacan as I remember it). I wish these were subbed, I prefer to watch my content as God intended (except for the Streamline dub of Akira  )

Here's the fillums:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nymyqJfOY1Y

That's episode 1 above. The playlist for all 26 episodes is here:

The Sherlock Holmes yoke Julien was on about... Playlist

Have a look at the other stuff there. There is all sorts. Virtua Fighter. Lupin! and so on. Some good stuff for middle-aged anime fans, young people who want to know what real Japanese animation looks like, and people who are nearly dead.

Sort of happy this is on DVD, now something else I want to buy but don't really need.

Discotek re-released the whole series a year or two ago, and it's still available. We also got selective episodes on VHS in the early 1990's.
https://www.animecornerstore.com/sherlockhound.html

Subbed? Excellent! I'll have to track that down. Watched episode 1 yesterday and it seems really familiar, like I'd seen it years ago. The dubbing just reminds me so much of Dogtanian, Willy Fogg, Mysterious Cities of Gold etc. A lot of those I think were arranged by BRB Spain in the very early 1980's. Maybe the same voice actors were hired for all of these shows?

OT: Incidentally, Willy Fogg originally aired in 1983 but was released in Japan much later as アニメ80日間世界一周 in 1987. Unusual because you'd have thought it would have received a Japanese dub much earlier as the show was a big hit for BRB Spain. Same with Dogtanian etc.

These are on DVD too for some time now. Doubtful you'll get anything better at this stage. BRB Spain have very kindly put the episodes on YouTube though for free in several languages!

English dub is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwUOpjvha8M

The legendary Spanish original audio track is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJUnJcKjeyA

Lots of other language tracks are available too. French, Italian, Russian etc. No Japanese tracks that I can see. They also have:

Dogtanian! Here's the opening credits in all the languages they recorded the show in:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9raC1SsHWno

Willy Fogg 2!!!! (nowhere near as good as the original of course)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoSh1oiyXqw

David The Gnome (good show but never one of my favourites, though if I remember correctly didn't Tom Bosley (utter legend) do the voice of David?):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igUDdBLRm-w

If you check out the BRB International channel, all of the playlists and language channels are available there for you. Knock yourselves out!

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHQApARXBBn54pz3IczojVA

One thing to add, the only show I couldn't find there was the Once Upon A Time... shows. I don't think BRB Spain were responsible for them though. IIRC Once Upon A Time... was a Japan/France co-production? One Upon A Time... Life was my favourite, followed by Once Upon A Time... Space. I think they did Once Upon A Time... Man, and Ulysees 31 too?

Ulysees 31 was (and I cannot believe this) apparently never a hit in the USA? So for the American folks on this forum, this video may help.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro0QNX_rVGA

EDIT: It seems Willy Fogg is going to be remade in a feature length film coming in 2021!

No worries, I hope my inane drivel helps people find things they may (or may not) be looking for! IRL I'm like Captain Kirk from Star Trek XII So Very Tired. I talk (constantly) but nobody listens.

Incidentally, I appear to have found the Japanese dub opening to Willy Fogg. To say it's completely different in terms of theme music, is a complete understatement!

Unless you live in some old gaf that's lined in lead, asbestos and is directly underneath a pylon then I wouldn't bother.

Sure if things were that bad you'd get the council or a contractor out to have a look at your wiring outside. Maybe rewire inside as well? Dunno, I'm not a sparky.

Half that stuff peddled on AV forums and magazines et al is pure snake oil. No, those argon coated power cables made out of uranium and quadruple wrapped in a twisted Fingerite and Hazenite (two of the rarest minerals on Earth) core dipped fifty seven times in polonium will not make your signal any cleaner.

My favourite is the utter pillocks who spend thousands on audiophile USB cables. It's 1's and 0's lads, come on.

http://www.computeraudiodesign.com/cad-cable/

For analogue connections, fair enough, there's some differences here and there. Put the money in to that, not the other rubbish. For HDMI (except for long distances), USB and so on, jog on, and take your snake oil with you.

What do I use for power connections? An APC unit does it for me. Extra peace of mind, and for prolonged power cuts or funky spikes, it gives me time to start shutting things like my NAS down and so on.

For the money folk spend on such muck you could have a decent holiday. Slip on over to Club Tropicana. If you're that hard up the drinks are free.

Hope all is well when you open them Ted, bet they weigh a tonne!

I've opened the damaged box right away. Got a fright when I saw that! All the discs inside that box are perfect aesthetically. Those meant more to me as those were discs I'd specifically procured. The other box is the 21 disc, 1 Yen special!

Interestingly they took quite the journey to get to my door. It took FedEx over 2 weeks to deliver this lot. They sat in Japan for ages. Then got punted across to Taiwan, then Hong Kong, then Belgium, then Germany, then the UK and finally Ireland. Usually they go Japan > France and/or Belgium > UK > Ireland and within 4 or 5 days. Probably COVID-19 related delays which is understandable, just so long as the workforce are all safe and well is what matters.

I'll post 'em up here tonight once I've defrosted from sea swimming after work! :silent:
