Culturedog has done a fantastic video regarding watching LDs in the correct aspect ratio with modern TVs Maybe useful to not many here but interesting never the less..
(link updated, please use the youtube highlight when posting)
We watched this during the lockdown in New Zealand, Stopped us chimping out over a few nights, Had not watched since was teenages. Still holds up today, well one of them was a bit of a groan..
Recently i email Pioneer NZ asking if i ever needed support services for my R7G if they could help or recommend where to inquire, just for a laugh. Repairs or services. Didn't expect a reply to be honest.
"Thank you for contacting us with your repair enquiry. This model has not been sold in NZ so we could have difficulty sourcing parts and manuals for it. Please forward your unit to Monaco Corporation Service Team, our address details are at the bottom of the email.
I forwarded my email to them, and had plenty of banter and laughs back and forth. :) They locally do pioneer warranty repairs etc,
Long story short the guy i was emailing said Japan still has alot of spares and would look forward to servicing a LD player again just to show the apprenticeship workers and for nostalgia. Said would be as easy as he can on the pocket.
Finally got a decentt 5.1 speaker set up for the room with the laserdisc player. Tested it out with CAV Twister, Dang the Dolby Ac-3 on that is Brutal, the LFE good god was epic.
Hopefully the rest of my AC-3 discs are just as good
Hoping to get a conversation going about stand out AC-3 Soundtracks.
23126 Godzilla (1998) 20102 Twister (1996) Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) [PILF-2830] ML105544 Goldeneye: Special Edition (1995) (i did find the LFE excessive at times)
ML105544 Goldeneye: Special Edition (1995) (i did find the LFE excessive at times)
I forgot to ask, Jake. What scenes in particular? I remember the scene where bond breaks through the brick wall with the tank had me reaching for the volume. Havent spun it in a while but I remember this and Tomorrow Never Dies having amazing AC3 tracks.
Am yet to spin and watch Tommorow Never Dies,
An Intro scene particularly, the tank scene and the finale i personally found hot but not complaining  Do not at all mean to pu anyone off using this LD title once they have AC3RF setup
I really cannot give a proper review as my R7G is only my third LD player and not using the s-video. I will when the retrotink 2x mini arrives and may make another comment.
First one was a CLD 2710K Picture was terrible. Terrible.
I remember my older brother had a Pioneer LD unit in the hayday. No autoflip, black, ac3 no idea what the model was.
I knew LD looked alot better.
Got a D590 which was like day and night, LD like i remembered.
Long story short and i owned a R7G. Love it, to my eyes it does surprise me at times that i am watching a old failed format. Particularly later released LD, for example 2000 Phantom menace looks much much better compared to the D590. I compared a old title 1984 released the Exorcist and the R7G only looked slighty better .
Comb filter settings is yet another thing to fiddle around with TV settings to help the movie look best as it can to your Eyeballs. D-EXT setting im not 100% sure but to my eyeballs it makes some jap discs look better. May just be my TV but thats my short input as a owner.
