Wasn't sure where to post this, so instead of creating a thread I'll just leave info here.
It appears a scene group has released BD rips of True Lies, but I can't see any info about actual physical releases anywhere atm.
Best quality seems to be:
True.Lies.1994.1080p.BluRay.x264.DTS-HD.MA.5.1-FGT

AM is pretty much dead here afaik, locally maybe you can pick up one station but I'm not 100% sure about that.
FM still has plenty of stations.

I never use radios now anyway, haven't for like 20 years even in cars. At work people turn the radio on out the back storage/sorting area and I turn it off constantly. It's just annoying background noise imo and everyone has a different opinion about what station it should be on

The WD-40 specialist contact cleaner should be fine. It leaves no residue.

It isn't the standard WD-40 used for squeaky hinges, rusted bolts and the like. That stuff shouldn't be used on electrical.

When you spray the contact cleaner make sure you isolate the laser lens from any air displacement. Lenses can be very sensitive.

I remember recording the intro of The Good the Bad and the Ugly to audio tape from VHS source way back in the 80's, just so I could listen to it on my Walkman. I think I had it on a compilation tape with AC/DC and a bunch of other hard rock/metal :P
Got played a lot on the bus trip home from school, I lived in the country so from school finish it would take like an hour to get home.

Welcome :)

It is still possible to get into LD on the cheap, I only got my first player recently pretty much for the same reason you're looking at it now (I've become more fond of old tech as I get older). Haven't collected many LD releases but I'm not prepared to spend loads of money, I basically have what I wanted to get initially bar a really nice Star Wars OT box set and possibly a few other odd things.

I'm about the same age as you and yeah, LD wasn't for average income people over here. It was all VHS with a few Beta players scattered around.

The only thing about convicts I'm mad about is that so many non-Australians on the internet think most of Australia is descended from them, the assumption is that you have at least one convict ancestor. Both sides of my family weren't even here during WW2 let alone that far back. A lot of people came here after WW2, before that the population was quite small. It still is a small population compared to the likes of the US and taking into account the size of the country...it's sorta like Canada in that way I guess.

Neighbours etc are just aussie trash, they'll rot your brain

Babylon 5 is awesome :D

Just watching some very early episodes of SNL.
A lot of these I've only seen bits of over the years. Just watched John Belushi singing with Joe Cocker  Eric Idle is in that episode too.

This appears to be an NTSC player so you just need to make sure your TV is NTSC capable (not sure what Australia’s analog system was based on).

Australia is PAL, but tv's here have been multi region for ages.
I can't remember the last time I saw a new tv that was PAL only. Even a lot of the late crt sets were multi region unlike the equivalent US models (eg my 32" 4:3 Trinitron is multi region). Some of the imported euro crt's weren't multi region though and those would have scart (scart wasn't all that common here).

Firstly, some tubes are better than others. I'm not talking about pq, I mean lifespan which is rated in hours.
A lot of people that had crt sets die all the time were running them around 20 hours a day, every day of the year.

To make a crt last longer than 10 years you simply don't use it all the time. It's one reason the really good sets are thin on the ground now, the other reason (which is obvious) is that people turf good sets.

I'm sure the single Trinitron I have atm would be dead if I had been using it all this time as my main. I've probably had it for around 10 years myself but rarely use it now. No idea how much use it had before I got it, it didn't have any cosmetic damage but the remote was missing.

I haven't checked right this minute but you should be able to find what you need on aliexpress. There are sellers that have loads of different power supply units, as long as you know the ratings you need and also the tip polarity. Yes US/Japan and Euro type voltages. Australia uses the same mains voltage as the UK but the wall plug/socket is different, New Zealand is the same as Australia. AU/NZ type plugs are a little less common as an option on ali but they are there if you dig in (search there can be pretty random so you may need to spend some time).

Shipping is probably the bigger issue atm.

Looks like the screen is heavily marked. Was it already like that or did you transport it without taking into account the weight being mostly at the front? Or even worse, transport face down?
Yeah, this was all me, see above.

All exuberance; poor execution :S

Have a very close look at the glass and see if most of the damage is the anti-glare film (or whatever it's called). You can remove the film from crt's like that, it's a trick a lot of people do so they can lower brightness to extended tube life but also handy if there are some screen marks.
Of course once the film is removed reflections from lights and daylight will be more of an issue. Use a light behind the tv and you won't notice.

Came across some more rumour material about True Lies and The Abyss 4k whilst reading about something else (I'll get to that at the end of this post).

https://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/1144818-disney-reportedly-halts-production-of-4k-physical-home-media

Disney halting production of 4k physical media, probably to concentrate on padding out it's streaming service.
So if true that will probably include Fox stuff...
The news may come as a bit of a shock to fans of collecting physical media, especially given the entire 20th Century Fox library will not be giving new 4K releases as many of them have yet to receive one, namely classics such as Fight Club, The French Connection, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Sources do suggest, however, that Disney may offer the licenses to its “less-demanded” catalogue titles to indie distribution companies such as Criterion, Arrow or Shout! Factory.

And then this caught my eye:
Despite this, however, the studio is eying potential 4K issues of James Cameron’s Aliens, Avatar, True Lies and The Abyss given the filmmaker is currently working on sequels to the sci-fi adventure franchise for Disney, for which the House of Mouse is investing $1 billion across four films.

Maybe some people here have already read this as the page I linked to above is dated 10th August 2020.

Anyway, I came across this because I was reading about El Topo 4k restoration, as part of Alejandro Jodorowsky 4K Restoration Collection.
https://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/1138335-abkco-unveils-alejandro-jodorowsky-4k-restoration-collection

At the age of 91, Jodorowsky is as relevant as he’s ever been. In addition to completing  Psychomagic, A Healing Art, he supervised the color correction of the 4K restorations of his essential films using the original 35mm elements, with stunning and vibrant results. El Topo is presented in 1:33 aspect ratio as it was shown in theaters in 1970. It is also available for the first time in 1.85:1 widescreen. Jodorowsky originally envisioned the film with this aspect ratio as an homage to Sergio Leone, and a half century later, that dream has finally been fulfilled.

I have a 230v (EU version) Sony MOD RF1 which apart from cosmetic differences on the front appears as though it could be the same unit as the Yamaha, I purchased it new here in the UK back in the late 90s. If of any use I could open this one up to photograph ?

Up to Julien I guess, but I think another thread for the Sony EU might be a good idea.
They could be different or the same internally idk.

Man, I f*cking hate Star Wars.
Well we could talk about the mono mix of The Terminator too if that's more up your alley...or the screwed up mono mix of Mad Max, but unfortunately I don't think any of the Laserdisc releases of that film include the original Aussie mono track.

Probably not, idk.
The first 2 films should only be viewed using original uncut Aussie versions (with proper audio). But I understand why dubbed versions of films exist, plenty of people (not just some Americans) are too lazy to read subtitles if they can't understand other English regional accents (I've always found this hilariously ignorant myself) and even more people don't like listening to foreign languages at all. Probably not as much of an issue now but decades ago it was a huge problem that just wrecked many films and tv shows (imo anyway).

I've been searching for two of the japanese "Millennium" TV series box sets that are still missing in my collection for years now. They never were easy to find outside of Japan but these days prices for one of those are somewhat insane. Just like that "Max Headroom: The Original Story" US disc that just won't show up anywhere - will I ever manage to get my hands on one?

Or old Motorhead LDs, too. Still looking for a copy of "Deaf Not Blind" that won't cost me an arm and a leg...

There was a local guy that had some Millennium stuff (pretty sure it was Japanese as most of his LD's are) like last year but I'm not sure if he sold it or was keeping it.
He has always had pretty reasonable prices on what he sells, not necessarily dirt cheap all the time but I have got some nice titles dirt cheap off him (actually sourced most of what I have from him without spending much). Because he's local shipping was cheap, plus he had a replacement policy for discs damaged during transit (don't know if he still does that, or if it covered international sales either).

Has anyone seen Bounty, The (1984) [ID2593OR] ?

Is it worth watching?

Strangely was taught about that at school

Might be because there is a New Zealand connection, with descendants at least (but if you studied it maybe you know of more connections).

Malcolm Eadie Champion, who is credited as being New Zealand's first Olympic gold medallist is a descendant of one of the mutineers (Matthew Quintal). He took part in the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm as part of the Australasia team (Australia and New Zealand combined, a very common thing back in those days as I'm sure you know, eg The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps formed in 1914).

Yeah it's lost. The thing about the LDs at this point is the price, these Blus will probably be cheaper. Hell you can't even always find the US LDs for sale.

Another thing about blu-ray is that making a backup copy is easy and doesn't require expensive hardware or technical knowledge, time and effort.

So if a decent enough LD to BD transfer is made, then make a backup copy of the BD.

I wouldn't worry too much about the VA rating tbh, if you go to full specs link on that page you can see additional info about input and output current (latter is 7.5 Amps).

The current draw of your two devices you want to connect to it needs to be less than 7.5 total (I'm assuming that's a total rating and not 7.5 for each Japanese 100v socket).

I'm only saying don't worry about the VA because some devices don't even have that info prominently displayed, because it isn't required everywhere.
Also it's more technical and I'm not knowledgeable enough to elaborate without doing some reading myself.

Star Blazers, Ulysses 31 and Mysterious Cities of Gold were all broadcast free-to-air when I was a kid. I think those were all North American dubs but besides Star Blazers it has been ages since I have seen them.

The only Japanese show (not anime though) I remember watching that didn't have an American dub was Monkey (I think the Japanese title is Saiyūki). The dub is British, I'm sure plenty of people in the UK, Australia and New Zealand have seen this dubbed version although originally not all the episodes were dubbed and broadcast.

Think that just got a UK/AU BD release, not sure if it's region locked. No idea about NA release (I haven't looked).
